    Carbon nanotube: a low-loss spin-current waveguide

    We demonstrate with a quantum-mechanical approach that carbon nanotubes are excellent spin-current waveguides and are able to carry information stored in a precessing magnetic moment for long distances with very little dispersion and with tunable degrees of attenuation. Pulsed magnetic excitations are predicted to travel with the nanotube Fermi velocity and are able to induce similar excitations in remote locations. Such an efficient way of transporting magnetic information suggests that nanotubes are promising candidates for memory devices with fast magnetization switchings

    Instance Space of the Number Partitioning Problem

    Within the replica framework we study analytically the instance space of the number partitioning problem. This classic integer programming problem consists of partitioning a sequence of N positive real numbers \{a_1, a_2,..., a_N} (the instance) into two sets such that the absolute value of the difference of the sums of aja_j over the two sets is minimized. We show that there is an upper bound αcN\alpha_c N to the number of perfect partitions (i.e. partitions for which that difference is zero) and characterize the statistical properties of the instances for which those partitions exist. In particular, in the case that the two sets have the same cardinality (balanced partitions) we find αc=1/2\alpha_c=1/2. Moreover, we show that the disordered model resulting from hte instance space approach can be viewed as a model of replicators where the random interactions are given by the Hebb rule.Comment: 7 page

    The effect of a remifentanil bolus on the bispectral index of the EEG (BIS) in anaesthetized patients independently from intubation and surgical stimuli

    Background and objective: Remifentanil boluses are used in different clinical situations and the effects on bispectral index monitoring are unclear. We analysed the effect of a remifentanil bolus on the bispectral index of the electroencephalogram (bispectral index) under total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil. Methods: ASA I–III patients were included in this study. All patients received a 2 µg kg 1 remifentanil bolus in a period free from stimuli. Bispectral index and haemodynamic data were collected from an A-2000XP bispectral index monitor (every second) and an AS/3 Datex monitor (every 5 s). Bispectral index data were analysed using the area under the curve. Mean arterial pressure and heart rate were averaged at each 30-s period and analysed using analysis of variance. Results: A total of 240 bispectral index values were obtained per patient. The area under the curve between 90 and 120 s after the bolus was significantly lower than the basal area under the curve (average of all areas before the bolus, P 0.05). Mean arterial pressure and heart rate were significantly reduced from 96.4 19.9 mmHg at the time of the bolus to 74.2 16.6 mmHg 120 s after, and from 70 16.4 bpm at the time of the bolus to 61 13.6 bpm after (P 0.001), respectively. Conclusions: There was a significant reduction in the areas under the curve between 90–120 s following the bolus. Heart rate and blood pressure also showed significant reductions. Thus, remifentanil bolus given under total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil decreases bispectral index, an effect independent of intubation and surgical stimuli.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Excitation energy spectra and absolute cross-section angular distributions were measured for the 13C(18O,16O)15C two-neutron transfer reaction at 84 MeV incident energy. Exact finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations are used to analyse the data considering both the direct two-neutron transfer and the two-step sequential mechanism. For the direct calculations, two approaches are discussed: The extreme cluster and the newly introduced microscopic cluster. The latter makes use of spectroscopic amplitudes in the centre-of-mass reference frame, derived from shell-model calculations. The results describe well the experimental cross sections

    The C13(O18,O16)C15 reaction is studied at 84 MeV incident energy. Excitation energy spectra and absolute cross-section angular distributions for the strongest transitions are measured with good energy and angular resolutions. Strong selectivity for two-neutron configurations in the states of the residual nucleus is found. The measured cross-section angular distributions are analyzed by exact finite-range coupled reaction channel calculations. The two-particle wave functions are extracted using the extreme cluster and the independent coordinate scheme with shell-model derived coupling strengths. A new approach also is introduced, the microscopic cluster, in which the spectroscopic amplitudes in the center-of-mass reference frame are derived from shell-model calculations using the Moshinsky transformation brackets. This new model is able to describe well the experimental cross section and to highlight cluster configurations in the involved wave functions

    Measuring performance in agri‐food supply chains: A case study of a Portuguese company

    Organizations seek to create value, increase competitiveness, reduce costs, share information and strengthen relationships between the various actors in the chain. In this sense, it is of the utmost importance that tools be developed which define objectives, monitor processes and document the performance of the supply chains. The Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) have come about to aid decision support, bringing together relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPis) which are fundamental for decision makers when deciding the best strategies for increasing supply chain competitiveness. In this study a PMS was developed collating a range of KPIs that seek to help in the continuous improvement of the agri-food supply chain. A case study allowed a PMS model to be designed incorporating the experiences of professionals in the area and subsequent tests to be made of its applicability, its outputs and its usefulness for decision support in a Portuguese plant.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Sex differences in functional connectivity between resting state brain networks in autism spectrum disorder

    Functional brain connectivity (FBC) has previously been examined in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) between-resting-state networks (RSNs) using a highly sensitive and reproducible hypothesis-free approach. However, results have been inconsistent and sex differences have only recently been taken into consideration using this approach. We estimated main effects of diagnosis and sex and a diagnosis by sex interaction on between-RSNs FBC in 83 ASD (40 females/43 males) and 85 typically developing controls (TC; 43 females/42 males). We found increased connectivity between the default mode (DM) and (a) the executive control networks in ASD (vs. TC); (b) the cerebellum networks in males (vs. females); and (c) female-specific altered connectivity involving visual, language and basal ganglia (BG) networks in ASD—in suggestive compatibility with ASD cognitive and neuroscientific theories.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
