Tese de doutoramento em História ContemporâneaThe institutionalisation of the juridical knowledge in the Constitutional Monarchy – the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra The unity of the juridical curriculum in the constitutional monarchy denotes the polarisation of the process of institutionalisation of the juridical knowledge from disruption to continuity. It can be argued that the leadership of the Faculty of Law, as responsible for the juridical skill of the curricula, is a sign of its early recognition as the main legitimating instance of the intellectual power, being the government power the second legitimating instance. The study carried out about the Faculty of Law teachers intends to demonstrate the process of structuration of the academic field, strongly based on the invocation of the science. Our investigation particularises some domains embedded in the juridical knowledge that appeared to be especially connected with the conceptualisation and instrumentation of the State. For this purpose the study focused the discipline which is nuclear for the juridical grammar: the Philosophy of Law. We hope to have demonstrated that the liberal thought is a diffuse one and turned out to be a third way of socio-politics theorisation, as far off the pure liberal political model as the socialist and collectivist doctrines that were very disseminated at the time. The third way particularly exhibits in the statement of the political representation of social issues, in relation with the individual representation and the apology of the organic solidarity among political powers. The implications of this thought exceed the political realm and are especially linked to the economic field, sustaining the model of an intervenient State that would combine individual initiative with social interests to stand for national well-being

O casamento civil e o divórcio 1865-1910 : debates e representações

Dissertação mestrado História das PopulaçõesThe main purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of the debate on Marriage and Divorce Secularization that has been developed between 1865 and 1910. To achieve the objectives of our investigation we have used a variety of documental sources, specially those related to the discourses that social and poli ti cal elites produced, along that historical period. Some of these discourses have been intensively analysed, namely the juridical, political, feminist and literary ones. Although no conc1usion can be drawn upon this scientific issue, it is important to summarize two ideas which have. given way to our interpretative analysis. The first fundamental one was, undoubtedly, the strong ideological accent of the debate, simultaneous to the appropriation of the campaign for the divorce by vanguard political movements, ali revealing the important place ascribed to the fami1y, as a prominent social institution. The other one refers to the public concerns, expectations -and pressures- about illegitimacy and non-recognized familiar types of relationships. Both led finaly to the promulgation of the divorce law (3-XI- 1910) after the republican revolution

História da Universidade do Minho: balanço de um projeto e perspetivas para o futuro

O projeto “História da Universidade do Minho: da criação ao presente. Dinâmicas socio-históricas e expansão da rede universitária portuguesa” constituiu a resposta ao desafio lançado pela Fundação Carlos Lloyd Braga, na pessoa do então seu presidente, Professor Doutor Luís Couto Gonçalves, de realizar um estudo histórico sobre a instituição. Em causa estava a produção de umaobra, suportada por investigação histórica, que permitisse fixar os símbolos identitários e a trajetória da instituição, a lançar durante o ciclo comemorativo do 40.° aniversário da instituição. Tratava-se de dar corpo a uma ideia filiada no quadro de experiências congéneres, nacionais e internacionais, de disseminação do conhecimento histórico sobre as universidades1. No caso em estudo, impunha-se adequar o projeto de investigação à condição histórica da Universidade do Minho, enquanto representante do grupo de universidades novas implementadas durante o ciclo de apogeu do sistema de ensino superior ocidental
