    Effective hamiltonian approach to the non-Markovian dynamics in a spin-bath

    We investigate the dynamics of a central spin that is coupled to a bath of spins through a non-uniform distribution of coupling constants. Simple analytical arguments based on master equation techniques as well as numerical simulations of the full von Neumann equation of the total system show that the short-time damping and decoherence behaviour of the central spin can be modelled accurately through an effective Hamiltonian involving a single effective coupling constant. The reduced short-time dynamics of the central spin is thus reproduced by an analytically solvable effective Hamiltonian model

    TLR4 Up-regulation and Reduced Foxp3 Expression in Mechanically Ventilated Smokers with Obstructive Chronic Bronchitis

    Background: Chronic bronchitis (CB) is a risk factor in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for accelerated lung function decline and increased mortality. The lung and systemic inflammatory and immunological profile of COPD patients with CB which acutely experience respiratory failure upon a disease exacerbation is unknown. Methods: In this study, we explored the expression of Foxp3 by western blot analysis, TLR4 by immunocytochemistry and the concentrations of IP-10 and IL-8 by ELISA in the mini-bronchoalveolar lavages (mini-BAL) and in the peripheral blood of patients with respiratory failure requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation. The recruited subjects were separated into three different groups: smokers with CB and COPD (COPD, n = 18), smokers with CB but without COPD (S, n = 8) and patients without CB and without COPD (C, n = 10). Results: In mini-BAL of COPD group, Foxp3 and IP-10 were significantly reduced while TLR4 was significantly increased in comparison to C. TLR4 was also increased in mini-BAL of S. In COPD peripheral blood, Foxp3 was reduced in comparison to C but no significant differences were observed for TLR4 and for IP-10. No significant differences were observed for IL-8 concentrations in the mini-BAL and in the blood of the recruited patients. The mini-BAL TLR4 expression correlated with the Clinical Infective Pulmonary Score. Conclusions: In exacerbated COPD patients with respiratory failure, lung and systemic reduced immune regulatory events (low Foxp3 expression) and lung increased innate immunity responses (high TLR4 expression) occur. These events may contribute to the increased inflammatory events leading to respiratory failure

    Predictive Analysis of Healthcare-Associated Blood Stream Infections in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Using Artificial Intelligence: A Single Center Study

    Background: Neonatal infections represent one of the six main types of healthcare-associated infections and have resulted in increasing mortality rates in recent years due to preterm births or problems arising from childbirth. Although advances in obstetrics and technologies have minimized the number of deaths related to birth, different challenges have emerged in identifying the main factors affecting mortality and morbidity. Dataset characterization: We investigated healthcare-associated infections in a cohort of 1203 patients at the level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the “Federico II” University Hospital in Naples from 2016 to 2020 (60 months). Methods: The present paper used statistical analyses and logistic regression to identify an association between healthcare-associated blood stream infection (HABSIs) and the available risk factors in neonates and prevent their spread. We designed a supervised approach to predict whether a patient suffered from HABSI using seven different artificial intelligence models. Results: We analyzed a cohort of 1203 patients and found that birthweight and central line catheterization days were the most important predictors of suffering from HABSI. Conclusions: Our statistical analyses showed that birthweight and central line catheterization days were significant predictors of suffering from HABSI. Patients suffering from HABSI had lower gestational age and birthweight, which led to longer hospitalization and umbilical and central line catheterization days than non-HABSI neonates. The predictive analysis achieved the highest Area Under Curve (AUC), accuracy and F1-macro score in the prediction of HABSIs using Logistic Regression (LR) and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) models, which better resolved the imbalanced dataset (65 infected and 1038 healthy)

    New exactly solvable relativistic models with anomalous interaction

    A special class of Dirac-Pauli equations with time-like vector potentials of external field is investigated. A new exactly solvable relativistic model describing anomalous interaction of a neutral Dirac fermion with a cylindrically symmetric external e.m. field is presented. The related external field is a superposition of the electric field generated by a charged infinite filament and the magnetic field generated by a straight line current.     Benchmarking open source and paid services for speech to text: an analysis of quality and input variety

    IntroductionSpeech to text (STT) technology has seen increased usage in recent years for automating transcription of spoken language. To choose the most suitable tool for a given task, it is essential to evaluate the performance and quality of both open source and paid STT services.MethodsIn this paper, we conduct a benchmarking study of open source and paid STT services, with a specific focus on assessing their performance concerning the variety of input text. We utilizes ix datasets obtained from diverse sources, including interviews, lectures, and speeches, as input for the STT tools. The evaluation of the instruments employs the Word Error Rate (WER), a standard metric for STT evaluation.ResultsOur analysis of the results demonstrates significant variations in the performance of the STT tools based on the input text. Certain tools exhibit superior performance on specific types of audio samples compared to others. Our study provides insights into STT tool performance when handling substantial data volumes, as well as the challenges and opportunities posed by the multimedia nature of the data.DiscussionAlthough paid services generally demonstrate better accuracy and speed compared to open source alternatives, their performance remains dependent on the input text. The study highlights the need for considering specific requirements and characteristics of the audio samples when selecting an appropriate STT tool

    Cigarette smoke alters IL-33 expression and release in airway epithelial cells

    AbstractAirway epithelium is a regulator of innate immune responses to a variety of insults including cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke alters the expression and the activation of Toll Like Receptor 4 (TLR4), an innate immunity receptor. IL-33, an alarmin, increases innate immunity Th2 responses. The aims of this study were to explore whether mini-bronchoalveolar lavage (mini-BAL) or sera from smokers have altered concentrations of IL-33 and whether cigarette smoke extracts (CSE) alter both intracellular expression (mRNA and protein) and release of IL-33 in bronchial epithelial cells. The role of TLR4 in the expression of IL-33 was also explored.Mini-BALs, but not sera, from smokers show reduced concentrations of IL-33. The expression of IL-33 was increased also in bronchial epithelium from smokers. 20% CSE reduced IL-33 release but increased the mRNA for IL-33 by real time PCR and the intracellular expression of IL-33 in bronchial epithelial cells as confirmed by flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry and western blot analysis. The effect of CSE on IL-33 expression was also observed in primary bronchial epithelial cells. IL-33 expression was mainly concentrated within the cytoplasm of the cells. LPS, an agonist of TLR4, reduced IL-33 expression, and an inhibitor of TLR4 increased the intracellular expression of IL-33. In conclusion, the release of IL-33 is tightly controlled and, in smokers, an altered activation of TLR4 may lead to an increased intracellular expression of IL-33 with a limited IL-33 release

    Climate Change and Childhood Respiratory Health: A Call to Action for Paediatricians

    Climate change (CC) is one of the main contributors to health emergencies worldwide. CC appears to be closely interrelated with air pollution, as some pollutants like carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and black carbon are naturally occurring greenhouse gases. Air pollution may enhance the allergenicity of some plants and, also, has an adverse effect on respiratory health. Children are a uniquely vulnerable group that suffers disproportionately from CC burden. The increasing global warming related to CC has a big impact on plants' lifecycles, with earlier and longer pollen seasons, as well as higher pollen production, putting children affected by asthma and allergic rhinitis at risk for exacerbations. Extreme weather events may play a role too, not only in the exacerbations of allergic respiratory diseases but, also, in favouring respiratory infections. Even though paediatricians are already seeing the impacts of CC on their patients, their knowledge about CC-related health outcomes with specific regards to children's respiratory health is incomplete. This advocates for paediatricians' increased awareness and a better understanding of the CC impact on children's respiratory health. Having a special responsibility for children, paediatricians should actively be involved in policies aimed to protect the next generation from CC-related adverse health effects. Hence, there is an urgent need for them to take action and successfully educate families about CC issues. This paper aims at reviewing the evidence of CC-related environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall and extreme events on respiratory allergic diseases and respiratory infections in children and proposing specific actionable items for paediatricians to deal with CC-related health issues in their clinical practice

    Evaluation of the electricity savings resulting from a control system for artificial lights based on the available daylight

    Natural lighting in building environments is an important aspect for the occupants' mental and physical health. Furthermore, the proper exploitation of this resource can bring energy benefits related to the reduced use of artificial lighting. This work provides some estimates of the energy that can be saved by using a lighting system that recognises indoor illuminance. In particular, it is able to manage the switching on of lights according to the daylight detected in the room. The savings from this solution depend on the size and orientation of the window. The analysis is conducted on an office by means of simulations using the INLUX-DBR code. The locations have an influence on the luminance characteristics of the sky. The analysis is conducted with reference to one city in the south and one in the north of Italy (Cosenza and Milan). The energy saving is almost independent of latitude and therefore representative of the Italian territory. it is highly variable according to exposure, being the highest for southern exposure (97% with the window size equal to 36% of the floor area) and between 26% and 48% (as a function of window size) for northern exposure

    Stroemgren - near-infrared photometry of the Baade's Window. I. The bulge globular cluster NGC6528 and the surrounding field

    We present Stroemgren-NIR photometry of NGC6528 and its surroundings in the Baade's Window. uvby images were collected with EFOSC2@NTT, while NIR catalogs are based on VIRCAM@VISTA and SOFI@NTT data. The matching with HST photometry allowed us to obtain proper-motion-cleaned samples of cluster and bulge stars. The huge color sensitivity of Stroemgren-NIR CMDs helped us in disentangling age and metallicity effects. The RGB of NGC6528 is reproduced by scaled-solar isochrones with solar abundance or alpha-enhanced isochrones with the same iron content, and an age of t = 11+/-1 Gyr. These findings support literature age estimates for NGC6528. We also performed a theoretical metallicity calibration based on the Stroemgren index m1 and on visual-NIR colors for RGs, by adopting scaled-solar and alpha-enhanced models. We applied the calibration to estimate the metallicity of NGC6528, finding [Fe/H] = -0.04+/-0.02, with an intrinsic dispersion of 0.27 dex (by averaging abundances based on the scaled-solar [m], y - J and [m], y - K Metallicity-Index-Color relations), and of -0.11+/-0.01 (sig = 0.27 dex), by using the m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations. These findings support the results of Zoccali et al. (2004) which give [Fe/H] = -0.10+/-0.2, and a low alpha-enhancement, [alpha/Fe] = 0.1, and of Carretta et al. (2001), that find [Fe/H] = 0.07+/-0.01, with [alpha/Fe] = 0.2. By applying the scaled-solar MIC relations to Baade's window RGs, we find a metallicity distribution extending from [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 to ~ 1 dex, with peaks at [Fe/H] ~ -0.2 and +0.55 ([m], y - J and [m], y - K relations), and [Fe/H] ~ -0.25 and +0.4 (m1, y - J and m1, y - K relations). These findings are in good agreement with the spectroscopic studies of Hill et al. (2011) for the Baade's window, of Uttenthaler et al. (2012) for a region centered at (l,b) = (0, -10), and with the results of the ARGOS survey (Ness et al. 2013a).Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysic

Any citizen can enrich this platform, analysing public projects and documentino the current state with open data. «A Scuola di OpenCoesione» is an innovative experimental project of school teaching of open government strategy of openness and transparency on development policies. The goal of A Scuola di Open Coesione is to involve and sensitize students and teachers to the use of contents and tools to learn and monitor the projects of cohesion policies, to build interdisciplinary educational programs starting from the projects financed on their respective territories and enriching, through crowd sourcing, the information base of OpenCoesione adding information and data that are not currently availableas, for example, geolocation,multimedia materials, the characteristics of the project, the physical performance of the works
