The zero scalar curvature Yamabe problem on noncompact manifolds with boundary

Let $(M^n,g),~n\ge 3$ be a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold with compact boundary and $f$ a smooth function on $\partial M$. In this paper we show that for a large class of such manifolds, there exists a metric within the conformal class of $g$ that is complete, has zero scalar curvature on $M$ and has mean curvature $f$ on the boundary. The problem is equivalent to finding a positive solution to an elliptic equation with a non-linear boundary condition with critical Sobolev exponent.Comment: 8 pages, to appear in Indiana Math.

A volumetric Penrose inequality for conformally flat manifolds

We consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature that are conformal to $\R^{n}\setminus \Omega, n\ge 3$, and so that their boundary is a minimal hypersurface. (Here, $\Omega\subset \R^{n}$ is open bounded with smooth mean-convex boundary.) We prove that the ADM mass of any such manifold is bounded below by $(V/\beta_{n})^{(n-2)/n}$, where $V$ is the Euclidean volume of $\Omega$ and $\beta_{n}$ is the volume of the Euclidean unit $n$-ball. This gives a partial proof to a conjecture of Bray and Iga \cite{brayiga}. Surprisingly, we do not require the boundary to be outermost.Comment: 7 page

Adaptive Networks as a Model for Human Speech Development

Unrestricted English text can be converted to speech through the use of a look up table, or through a parallel feedforward network of deterministic processing units. Here, we reproduce the network structure used in NETtalk. Several experiments are carried out to determine which characteristics of the network are responsible for which learning behavior, and how closely that maps human speech development. The network is also trained with different levels of speech complexity, and with a second language. The results are shown to be highly dependent on statistical characteristics of the input

Gravity-driven instability in a spherical Hele-Shaw cell

A pair of concentric spheres separated by a small gap form a spherical Hele-Shaw cell. In this cell an interfacial instability arises when two immiscible fluids flow. We derive the equation of motion for the interface perturbation amplitudes, including both pressure and gravity drivings, using a mode coupling approach. Linear stability analysis shows that mode growth rates depend upon interface perimeter and gravitational force. O paradoxo do tratado constitucional europeu: entre o planejamento e a evolução da Europa comunitária

A introdução da tentativa de um Tratado Constitucional Europeu no sistema do Direito coloca em xeque duas das mais enraizadas instituições jurídicas do Ocidente: as Constituições e os Tratados, já que ambas partem, desde o ponto de vista da doutrina tradicional, de pressupostos conceituais diferenciados. O paradoxo está ligado às condições de evolução e de planificação do sistema social global. Com isso, o presente artigo busca analisar o modo pelo qual os dois modelos de diplomas legais – amplamente utilizados na sociedade global – passaram a receber um sentido diverso em função da co-evolução citada. Para tanto, analisa os dois institutos a partir de um ângulo relacionado à possibilidade de planejamento e de controle da evolução de determinada sociedade, no caso específico a Comunidade Europeia, em que tanto o referendo quanto a aprovação parlamentar demonstraram-se ineficazes para a necessidade de se compreender o sentido de uma nova conformação jurídica. A metodologia utilizada está alicerçada repousa no funcionalismo estrutural de Niklas Luhmann na vertente autopoiética de sua teoria dos sistemas sociais autopoiéticos. Para essa linha, o referendo é, pois, um mecanismo de auto-referência do sistema jurídico. Os resultados vertidos nas urnas europeias mostra esse paradoxo, deixando exposta a dúvida sobre a necessidade de planejamento do espaço comunitário ou a evolução a partir das suas próprias características. Este último conceito é o que explica tal fracasso, diante da complexidade das estruturas de uma sociedade transfronteiriça por excelência como a europeia
