An Empirical Analysis on the Tradeoff between Schooling and Child Labor in the Philippines
Does the prevalence of child work or child labor encumber on the country's economic growth and development? This paper looks into the reality that is child labor and tries to understand its existence in light of education realities and schooling issues in the Philippines. It studies the cruel intertemporal tradeoff that poor families are compelled to make in order to survive: young children are made to work, which sets back their schooling trajectory and negatively impacts on their future employability. A spillover effect of this sad choice is that the country's (future) labor productivity is likely to deteriorate in turn, which will have negative consequences on our long-term growth prospects.child labor, labor policies, International Labour Organization (ILO)

Spectroscopy Of Short-lived Radioactive Molecules
Molecules containing heavy and octupole deformed radioactive nuclei are predicted to provide enhanced sensitivity to investigate the violation of fundamental symmetries and to search for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. However, experimental measurements of such radioactive systems are scarce. Octupole deformed nuclei are very rare in nature or do not occur naturally. Thus, their study requires to overcome major experimental challenges. This contribution will discuss the recent achievements in laser spectroscopy of radioactive molecules at CRIS, ISOLDE-CERN. This talk will discuss recent spectroscopy measurements of short-lived radium fluoride molecules (RaF) alongside future perspectives in the study of other radioactive molecules. The impact of these developments in fundamental physics research will be discussed
Cultural Conception of Space and Development in the Colombian Amazon
With the objective of recognizing the cultural conception of space and development in the Colombian Amazon, an exploratory approach of documentary nature is developed to analyze the history of Amazonian settlement, the cosmogony-cosmology, the enrichment and/or impoverishment that generated the interaction between the indigenous and conquerors in âthe creation of the new world,â ecological relations, multilingualism, as well as the development of territory since a âgeographic-environmental-humanisticâ view, and the laws that currently protect indigenous peoples. It is concluded that the history of social relations has framed a syncretism between the visions of the populations about the world, the territory, development and economic interest, which positively and/or negatively feedback the protagonism of the ethnicities, the worldviews, the language, as well as the ways of relating to nature and therefore the indigenous perpetuity in the territory
A Multiple Criteria Framework to Evaluate Bank Branch Potential Attractiveness
Remarkable progress has occurred over the years in the performance evaluation of bank branches. Even though financial measures are usually considered the most important in assessing branch viability, we posit that insufficient attention has been given to other factors that affect the branchesâ potential profitability and attractiveness. Based on the integrated used of cognitive maps and MCDA techniques, we propose a framework that adds value to the way that potential attractiveness criteria to assess bank branches are selected and to the way that the trade-offs between those criteria are obtained. This framework is the result of a process involving several directors from the five largest banks operating in Portugal, and follows a constructivist approach. Our findings suggest that the use of cognitive maps systematically identifies previously omitted criteria that may assess potential attractiveness. The use of MCDA techniques may clarify and add transparency to the way trade-offs are dealt with. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed framework are also discussed.
Modelling of transient interference phenomena in collinear laser spectroscopy
Collinear laser spectroscopy of fast atomic beams has been established as one
of the main tools to perform precision experiments with atoms containing
short-lived nuclei. Although highly sensitive, the spectral resolution of these
techniques is typically limited to several MHz. Here, we study the use of
transient interference phenomena to potentially improve the experimental
resolution. Previous attempts to implement Ramsey-type measurements with fast
beams were limited by the lack of understanding of the observed line shapes. By
using a simple model, we provide a satisfactory description of the previously
observed line shapes, and propose alternative experimental schemes to improve
the resolution in fast ion-beam experiments.Comment: 7 pages without references, 8 figure
