This paper describes the use of a rotating all mirror image derotator system in collaboration with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to visualise and quantitatively examine the flow patterns between the blades of a centrifugal impeller. Velocity contours and vector maps of the relative flow field within a blade passage are presented for an impeller speed of 350 rpm and a flow rate of 510 l/h. The data are compared with the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model

An investigation on the stability conditions of the catenary wire system for a wide of wind relative direction is presented. The analysis was made with numerical methods by means of the Fluent software. The calculated lift forces were introduced in the equation of motion of the cylinders and stability conditions for the coupled system flow-structure were obtained

This spanish language paper presents the three-dimensional turbulent flow through the impeller passages and surroundings of a mixed-flow pump. The model has five impeller blades mounted on a conical hub and nine stator blades in a diffuser which brings the diagonally outward flow back to the axial direction. This pump was tested with air, giving a nominal flow-rate of 1.01 m3/s and 250 Pa at 1200 rpm
Vaginal neutrophil infiltration is contingent on ovarian cycle phase and independent of pathogen infection
The mucosa of the female reproductive tract must reconcile the presence of commensal microbiota and the transit of exogenous spermatozoa with the elimination of sexually transmitted pathogens. In the vagina, neutrophils are the principal cellular arm of innate immunity and constitute the first line of protection in response to infections or injury. Neutrophils are absent from the vaginal lumen during the ovulatory phase, probably to allow sperm to fertilize; however, the mechanisms that regulate neutrophil influx to the vagina in response to aggressions remain controversial. We have used mouse inseminations and infections of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Candida albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis, and HSV-2 models. We demonstrate that neutrophil infiltration of the vaginal mucosa is distinctively contingent on the ovarian cycle phase and independent of the sperm and pathogen challenge, probably to prevent sperm from being attacked by neutrophils. Neutrophils extravasation is a multi-step cascade of events, which includes their adhesion through selectins (E, P and L) and integrins of the endothelial cells. We have discovered that cervical endothelial cells expressed selectin-E (SELE, CD62E) to favor neutrophils recruitment and estradiol down-regulated SELE expression during ovulation, which impaired neutrophil transendothelial migration and orchestrated sperm tolerance. Progesterone up-regulated SELE to restore surveillance after ovulation
Urban and rural habitats differ in number and type of bird feeders and in bird species consuming supplementary food
Bird feeding is one of the most widespread direct interactions between man and nature, and this has important social and environmental consequences. However, this activity can differ between rural and urban habitats, due to inter alia habitat structure, human behaviour and the composition of wintering bird communities. We counted birds in 156 squares (0.25Â km(2) each) in December 2012 and again in January 2013 in locations in and around 26 towns and cities across Poland (in each urban area, we surveyed 3 squares and also 3 squares in nearby rural areas). At each count, we noted the number of bird feeders, the number of bird feeders with food, the type of feeders, additional food supplies potentially available for birds (bread offered by people, bins) and finally the birds themselves. In winter, urban and rural areas differ in the availability of food offered intentionally and unintentionally to birds by humans. Both types of food availability are higher in urban areas. Our findings suggest that different types of bird feeder support only those species specialized for that particular food type and this relationship is similar in urban and rural areas. The AXIOM project (Agile, eXtensible, fast I/O Module) aims at researching new software/hardware architectures for the future Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). These systems are expected to react in real-time, provide enough computational power for the assigned tasks, consume the least possible energy for such task (energy efficiency), scale up through modularity, allow for an easy programmability across performance scaling, and exploit at best existing standards at minimal costs
