The SPMM attended in this paper are: Current Mass Manufacturing (CMM), Lean Manufacturing (LM), Responsive Manufacturing (RM), Mass Customization (MC) and Agile Manufacturing (AM). Due to such diversity this paper proposes a method to identify the SPMM being used in a company and the most suitable SPMM. Moreover the method proposed is also useful to: evaluate and improve the integration degree between strategies and operation in manufacturing; point out companies without strategic focus; show mistakes in the company strategic attitude; help companies to choose tools, methodologies and technologies according to their strategic goals. The method proposed is illustrated in a multiple case study in the Brazilian shoes industry

Conception of a production control system for cell manufacturing

O sistema proposto foi concebido em 3 módulos (nível de produto final, de componentes e de operações), havendo em cada um deles contribuições relevantes para a literatura especializadaThis dissertation intends to integrate all production scheduling activities in the context of a Production Control System designed to operate in a Cellular Manufacture and in particular, in the semi-repetitive cellular manufacture. The conceptual framework to obtain the activity integration stands on a modification of the Production Control decision structure proposed by Burbidge, and in the recent approach of the model-based Decision Support Systems. Such a framework is able to provide the required flexibility in the Integrated Manufacturing environment, which is not possible to get by only the traditional Operations Research approach. The proposed Production Control System was designed with three modules, that is final products, components and operations levels. In each one of them, we present relevant contributions to the specialized literatura

Strategic Paradigms for Manufacturing Management (Spmm): Key Elements and Conceptual Model

This paper proposes a new concept in Manufacturing Management: Strategic Paradigm for Manufacturing Management (SPMM). This new concept aims to deal with the 20th century manufacturing management paradigms in a comparative and integrated way. To accomplish this goal four key elements are identified: drivers (market conditions that require SPMM implementation); performance objectives (representing the operation’s strategic objectives that each SPMM gives priority to); principles (the SPMM fundamentals) and enablers (the tools, technologies and methods of each SPMM). The main contributions of this paper are: i) the presentation of a conceptual model that relates the SPMM to operation’s strategic objectives; and, ii) the possibility of allowing comparisons and analyses of the manufacturing paradigms, facilitating the study and practical application of these paradigms. The proposed model deals with strategic questions in the Production/Operations Management context in a very pragmatic way. To illustrate the proposed model five case examples are presented.

Avaliação do grau de prioridade e do foco do Planejamento e Controle da Produção (PCP): modelos e estudos de casos Assessment of the priority and focus of Production Planning and Control (PPC): models and case studies

Two models are proposed in this paper: the first suggests the degree of priority a company should give to Production Planning and Control (PPC), while the second suggests the decision-making focus PPC should concentrate on, i.e., planning, scheduling, or both planning and scheduling. The two models are validated through case studies of ten major Brazilian manufacturers

Integrating Materials Flow, Production Control and Quality Control: a Proposal and Case Study

This paper presents a proposal for integrating materials flow, production control and quality control. The proposal is based on three principles: that materials flow must be as simple as possible, that a production control system must be compatible with the production system and that the production pace must take account of demand, capacity and quality. The paper examines the dependent relationship between Production Control (PC) and Quality Control (QC) since this relationship provides opportunities for improving manufacturing performance. A case study performed at the world’s largest pencil factory suggests that the proposal contributes effectively to operations management at the shop<br />floor level

This work proposes a Decision Support System (DSS) for production scheduling in steel casting foundries. To this end, the productive environment of these foundries is organized by means of a production control system known as Period Batch Control (PBC). Three viable decision models for production scheduling are proposed: a binary integer programming model, a model based on classical approximation methods, specifically the method known as beam search, and a model based on a meta-heuristic known as genetic algorithm. Also presented here are the experimental results obtained from the application of the three models and an analysis of the fitness of the proposal for eight representative steel casting foundries in the state of São Paulo, Brazil

Binary integer programming formulations for scheduling in market-driven foundries

    No full text
This paper describes the development and solution of binary integer formulations for production scheduling problems in market-driven foundries. This industrial sector is comprised of small and mid-sized companies with little or no automation, working with diversified production, involving several different metal alloy specifications in small tailor-made product lots. The characteristics and constraints involved in a typical production environment at these industries challenge the formulation of mathematical programming models that can be computationally solved when considering real applications. However, despite the interest on the part of these industries in counting on effective methods for production scheduling, there are few studies available on the subject. The computational tests prove the robustness and feasibility of proposed models in situations analogous to those found in production scheduling at the analyzed industrial sector.
