BES3 time of flight monitoring system
A Time of Flight monitoring system has been developed for BES3.
The light source is a 442-443 nm laser diode, which is stable and provides a
pulse width as narrow as 50 ps and a peak power as large as 2.6 W. Two
optical-fiber bundles with a total of 512 optical fibers, including spares, are
used to distribute the light pulses to the Time of Flight counters. The design,

Natural Language, Mixed-Initiative Personal Assistant Agents
The increasing popularity and use of personal voice assistant technologies, such as Siri and Google Now, is driving and expanding progress toward the long-term and lofty goal of using artificial intelligence to build human-computer dialog systems capable of understanding natural language. While dialog-based systems such as Siri support utterances communicated through natural language, they are limited in the flexibility they afford to the user in interacting with the system and, thus, support primarily action-requesting and information-seeking tasks. Mixed-initiative interaction, on the other hand, is a flexible interaction technique where the user and the system act as equal participants in an activity, and is often exhibited in human-human conversations. In this paper, we study user support for mixed-initiative interaction with dialog-based systems through natural language using a bag-of-words model and k-nearest-neighbor classifier. We study this problem in the context of a toolkit we developed for automated, mixed-initiative dialog system construction, involving a dialog authoring notation and management engine based on lambda calculus, for specifying and implementing task-based, mixed-initiative dialogs. We use ordering at Subway through natural language, human-computer dialogs as a case study. Our results demonstrate that the dialogs authored with our toolkit support the end user\u27s completion of a natural language, human-computer dialog in a mixed-initiative fashion. The use of natural language in the resulting mixed-initiative dialogs afford the user the ability to experience multiple self-directed paths through the dialog and makes the flexibility in communicating user utterances commensurate with that in dialog completion paths---an aspect missing from commercial assistants like Siri
On the fraction of dark matter in charged massive particles (CHAMPs)
From various cosmological, astrophysical and terrestrial requirements, we
derive conservative upper bounds on the present-day fraction of the mass of the
Galactic dark matter (DM) halo in charged massive particles (CHAMPs). If dark
matter particles are neutral but decay lately into CHAMPs, the lack of
detection of heavy hydrogen in sea water and the vertical pressure equilibrium
in the Galactic disc turn out to put the most stringent bounds. Adopting very
conservative assumptions about the recoiling velocity of CHAMPs in the decay
and on the decay energy deposited in baryonic gas, we find that the lifetime
for decaying neutral DM must be > (0.9-3.4)x 10^3 Gyr. Even assuming the
gyroradii of CHAMPs in the Galactic magnetic field are too small for halo
CHAMPs to reach Earth, the present-day fraction of the mass of the Galactic
halo in CHAMPs should be < (0.4-1.4)x 10^{-2}. We show that redistributing the
DM through the coupling between CHAMPs and the ubiquitous magnetic fields
cannot be a solution to the cuspy halo problem in dwarf galaxies.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures. To appear in JCA
Rigidity percolation in a field
Rigidity Percolation with g degrees of freedom per site is analyzed on
randomly diluted Erdos-Renyi graphs with average connectivity gamma, in the
presence of a field h. In the (gamma,h) plane, the rigid and flexible phases
are separated by a line of first-order transitions whose location is determined
exactly. This line ends at a critical point with classical critical exponents.
Analytic expressions are given for the densities n_f of uncanceled degrees of
freedom and gamma_r of redundant bonds. Upon crossing the coexistence line, n_f
and gamma_r are continuous, although their first derivatives are discontinuous.
We extend, for the case of nonzero field, a recently proposed hypothesis,
namely that the density of uncanceled degrees of freedom is a ``free energy''
for Rigidity Percolation. Analytic expressions are obtained for the energy,
entropy, and specific heat. Some analogies with a liquid-vapor transition are
discussed. Particularizing to zero field, we find that the existence of a
(g+1)-core is a necessary condition for rigidity percolation with g degrees of
freedom. At the transition point gamma_c, Maxwell counting of degrees of
freedom is exact on the rigid cluster and on the (g+1)-rigid-core, i.e. the
average coordination of these subgraphs is exactly 2g, although gamma_r, the
average coordination of the whole system, is smaller than 2g. gamma_c is found
to converge to 2g for large g, i.e. in this limit Maxwell counting is exact

Time Lumps in Nonlocal Stringy Models and Cosmological Applications
We study lump solutions in nonlocal toy models and their cosmological
applications. These models are motivated by a description of D-brane decay
within string field theory framework. In order to find cosmological solutions
we use the simplest local approximation keeping only second derivative terms in
nonlocal dynamics. We study a validity of this approximation in flat background
where time lump solutions can be written explicitly. We work out the validity
of this approximation. We show that our models at large time exhibit the

Seasonal migration of Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) over the Bohai Sea in northern China
The rice leaf roller, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée), is a serious insect pest of rice with a strong migratory ability. Previous studies on the migration of C. medinalis were mostly carried out in tropical or subtropical regions, however, and what the pattern of seasonal movements this species exhibits in temperate regions (i.e. Northern China, where they cannot overwinter) remains unknown. Here we present data from an 11-year study of this species made by searchlight trapping on Beihuang Island (BH, 38°24′N; 120°55′E) in the centre of the Bohai Strait, which provides direct evidence that C. medinalis regularly migrates across this sea into northeastern agricultural region of China, and to take advantage of the abundant food resources there during the summer season. There was considerable seasonal variation in number of C. medinalis trapped on BH, and the migration period during 2003–2013 ranged from 72 to 122 days. Some females trapped in June and July showed a relatively higher proportion of mated and a degree of ovarian development suggesting that the migration of this species is not completely bound by the ‘oogenesis-flight syndrome’. These findings revealed a new route for C. medinalis movements to and from Northeastern China, which will help us develop more effective management strategies against this pest
Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Fluxes and Their Constraints
Applying our recently developed propagation code we review extragalactic
neutrino fluxes above 10^{14} eV in various scenarios and how they are
constrained by current data. We specifically identify scenarios in which the
cosmogenic neutrino flux, produced by pion production of ultra high energy
cosmic rays outside their sources, is considerably higher than the
"Waxman-Bahcall bound". This is easy to achieve for sources with hard injection
spectra and luminosities that were higher in the past. Such fluxes would
significantly increase the chances to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos with
