    Anatomy of Exotic Higgs Decays in 2HDM

    Large mass splittings between new scalars in two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM) open a key avenue to search for these new states via exotic heavy Higgs decays. We discuss in detail the different search channels for these new scalars at the LHC in the presence of a sizable mass splitting, i.e. a hierarchical 2HDM scenario, taking into account the theoretical and experimental constraints. We provide benchmark planes to exploit the complementarity among these searches, analyzing their potential to probe the hierarchical 2HDM parameter space during LHC Run 2

    Determining Bolometric Corrections for BATSE Burst Observations

    We compare the energy and count fluxes obtained by integrating over the finite bandwidth of BATSE with a measure proportional to the bolometric energy flux, the phi-measure, introduced by Borgonovo & Ryde. We do this on a sample of 74 bright, long, and smooth pulses from 55 GRBs. The correction factors show a fairly constant behavior over the whole sample, when the signal-to-noise-ratio is high enough.     Optimal Economic Schedule for a Network of Microgrids With Hybrid Energy Storage System Using Distributed Model Predictive Control

Pago por publicar en abierto.In this paper, an optimal procedure for the economic schedule of a network of interconnected microgrids with hybrid energy storage system is carried out through a control algorithm based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC). The algorithm is specifically designed according to the criterion of improving the cost function of each microgrid acting as a single system through the network mode operation. The algorithm allows maximum economical benefit of the microgrids, minimizing the degradation causes of each storage system, and fulfilling the different system constraints. In order to capture both continuous/discrete dynamics and switching between different operating conditions, the plant is modeled with the framework of mixed logic dynamic.     En La invención de Morel (1940), Adolfo Bioy Casares presenta un personaje anónimo que, a lo largo del texto, se encargará de describir al detalle las condiciones de una isla deshabitada (en apariencia), al mismo tiempo que trata de asegurar su supervivencia. Sin embargo, por medio de este narrador no confiable, el autor argentino también toma en consideración los principios de géneros populares (la ciencia ficción, el relato policial, etc.) para conformar otra especie de forma literaria de base especulativa.     Supporting teachers in collaborative student modeling: a framework and an implementation

    Collaborative student modeling in adaptive learning environments allows the learners to inspect and modify their own student models. It is often considered as a collaboration between students and the system to promote learners’ reflection and to collaboratively assess the course. When adaptive learning environments are used in the classroom, teachers act as a guide through the learning process. Thus, they need to monitor students’ interactions in order to understand and evaluate their activities. Although, the knowledge gained through this monitorization can be extremely useful to student modeling, collaboration between teachers and the system to achieve this goal has not been considered in the literature. In this paper we present a framework to support teachers in this task.     Correlates of eye colour and pattern in mantellid frogs

    With more than 250 species, the Mantellidae is the most species-rich family of frogs in Madagascar. These frogs are highly diversified in morphology, ecology and natural history. Based on a molecular phylogeny of 248 mantellids, we here examine the distribution of three characters reflecting the diversity of eye colouration and two characters of head colouration along the mantellid tree, and their correlation with the general ecology and habitat use of these frogs. We use Bayesian stochastic character mapping, character association tests and concentrated changes tests of correlated evolution of these variables. We confirm previously formulated hypotheses of eye colour pattern being significantly correlated with ecology and habits, with three main character associations: many tree frogs of the genus Boophis have a bright coloured iris, often with annular elements and a blue-coloured iris periphery (sclera); terrestrial leaf-litter dwellers have an iris horizontally divided into an upper light and lower dark part; and diurnal, terrestrial and aposematic Mantella frogs have a uniformly black iris. Furthermore, the presence of a frenal streak and a dark tympanic patch were associated with each other, with horizontally divided iris colour, and with terrestrial habits. Our study is restricted to the mantellid radiation, and the performed tests detect the simultaneous distribution of independent character states in a tree, rather than providing a measure for phylogenetic independent correlation of these character states. The concentrated changes tests suggest that the evolutionary origin of a bright iris might indeed be correlated to arboreal habits. Yet, rather than testing hypotheses of adaptive evolution of eye colour in anurans, our study serves to formulate hypotheses of convergence more precisely and thus to open perspectives for their further testing in a comparative framework along the anuran tree of life. For instance, a brightly coloured iris and sclera might serve mate recognition or as aposematic defensive strategy especially in tree frogs, and a horizontally divided iris colour might constitute a disruptive defensive strategy in frogs inhabiting the leaf litter stratum
