BeppoSAX observations of the quasar Markarian 205
We present the first BeppoSAX observation (0.1 to 220 keV) of the quasar Mrk
205. We have searched for the unusual Fe line profile claimed in the XMM-Newton
spectrum which has been widely discussed in recent literature. We find no
evidence for a broad, ionized Fe line component in our data. We detect for the
first time a Compton hump in this object. Besides, when this component is
included in the fit, the line strength diminishes, in agreement with a recent
re-analysis of the XMM-Newton data, but with better constraints on the
reflection component thanks to the PDS instrument (15-220 keV). We interpret
this fact as another indication for illumination of a distant and cold material
rather than reprocessing in the highly ionized inner parts of an accretion
disk. We cannot constrain the presence of a high energy cutoff but we confirm

Radiation environment along the INTEGRAL orbit measured with the IREM monitor
The INTEGRAL Radiation Environment Monitor (IREM) is a payload supporting
instrument on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The monitor continually measures
electron and proton fluxes along the orbit and provides this information to the
spacecraft on board data handler. The mission alert system broadcasts it to the
payload instruments enabling them to react accordingly to the current radiation
level. Additionally, the IREM conducts its autonomous research mapping the
Earth radiation environment for the space weather program. Its scientific data

Nonresonant microwave absorption in epitaxial La-Sr-Mn-O films and its relation to colossal magnetoresistance
We study magnetic-field-dependent nonresonant microwave absorption and
dispersion in thin LaSrMnO films and show that it
originates from the colossal magnetoresistance. We develop the model for
magnetoresistance of a thin ferromagnetic film in oblique magnetic field. The
model accounts fairly well for our experimental findings, as well as for
results of other researchers. We demonstrate that nonresonant microwave
absorption is a powerful technique that allows contactless measurement of
magnetic properties of thin films, including magnetoresistance, anisotropy

Strain and correlation of self-organized Ge_(1-x)Mn_x nanocolumns embedded in Ge (001)
We report on the structural properties of Ge_(1-x)Mn_x layers grown by
molecular beam epitaxy. In these layers, nanocolumns with a high Mn content are
embedded in an almost-pure Ge matrix. We have used grazing-incidence X-ray
scattering, atomic force and transmission electron microscopy to study the
structural properties of the columns. We demonstrate how the elastic
deformation of the matrix (as calculated using atomistic simulations) around
the columns, as well as the average inter-column distance can account for the
shape of the diffusion around Bragg peaks.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Acquaintances or Familiar Strangers?:How Similarity and Spatial Proximity Shape Neighbour Relations within Residential Buildings
While scholars have long established that city dwellers choose with whom to develop relationships on the basis of social proximity, spatial proximity remains the basis for neighbour relations involving greetings, social conversation, and the exchange of services. Few studies have systematically compared the respective roles of spatial and social proximity in neighbour relations. In this paper, we investigate these two factors through statistical analysis of four social network datasets representing relationships within four rented apartment buildings in Geneva, Switzerland. Using a measure of distance that takes into account how the layout and materiality of buildings shape relationships through accessibility, visibility and audibility, we compare the effects of spatial proximity with the effects of individual determinants and similarity. Our study also breaks new ground by comparing weak ties–between people who interact regularly–and “invisible ties”, or ties to familiar strangers. Our study confirms that spatial proximity increases the likelihood of weak ties and questions the underlying mechanisms. It also shows that in addition to sociability, familiarity and anonymity are constitutive dimensions of neighbouring, even at the scale of buildings
The digital data processing concepts of the LOFT mission
The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT) is one of the five mission
candidates that were considered by ESA for an M3 mission (with a launch
opportunity in 2022 - 2024). LOFT features two instruments: the Large Area
Detector (LAD) and the Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a 10 m 2 -class
instrument with approximately 15 times the collecting area of the largest
timing mission so far (RXTE) for the first time combined with CCD-class
spectral resolution. The WFM will continuously monitor the sky and recognise
changes in source states, detect transient and bursting phenomena and will
allow the mission to respond to this. Observing the brightest X-ray sources
with the effective area of the LAD leads to enormous data rates that need to be
processed on several levels, filtered and compressed in real-time already on
board. The WFM data processing on the other hand puts rather low constraints on
the data rate but requires algorithms to find the photon interaction location
on the detector and then to deconvolve the detector image in order to obtain
the sky coordinates of observed transient sources. In the following, we want to
give an overview of the data handling concepts that were developed during the

INTEGRAL timing and localization performance
In this letter we report on the accuracy of the attitude, misalignment, orbit
and time correlation which are used to perform scientific analyses of the
INTEGRAL data. The boresight attitude during science pointings has an accuracy
of 3 arcsec. At the center of the field, the misalignments have been calibrated
leading to a location accuracy of 4 to 40 arcsec for the different instruments.
The spacecraft position is known within 10 meters. The relative timing between
instruments could be reconstructed within 10 microsec and the absolute timing

Avoidance, pacing, or persistence in multidisciplinary functional rehabilitation for chronic musculoskeletal pain: An observational study with cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.
Three main activity patterns have been distinguished in describing chronic pain (avoidance, pacing and persistence). However, their influence on patient outcomes remains a question of debate. This observational study aimed to measure the associations between the avoidance, pacing, and persistence (labelled overdoing) scales of the Patterns of Activity Measure-Pain (POAM-P), self-reported outcomes (pain-interference, depression, functional ability), and observational outcomes (walking, lifting test, physical fitness).
We conducted an observational study with cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. The data were collected prospectively before and after treatment, which was a 5-week functional rehabilitation including vocational aspects. In addition to self-reported and observational outcomes, patients were asked if they thought they would be able to return to work at 6 months. Analyses were conducted with treatment effect sizes, correlations, and multiple regression models.
In this sample (891 patients), we found on average small to moderate improvements for pain-interference and observational outcomes (Cohen's d: 0.37 to 0.64). According to the multivariable models, overdoing was associated with most of the beneficial psychosocial and observational outcomes (β -0.13 to 0.17; all p<0.01). Avoidance was related to negative psychosocial outcomes before treatment (β -0.09 to 0.17; all p<0.015). Pacing, which had moderate correlation with avoidance (r = 0.46), was not associated with most of the outcomes. The feeling that the goal of returning to work was attainable was associated with lower avoidance scores (adjusted OR 0.97; p = 0.024).
The overdoing POAM-P scale probably measures a task-contingent persistence, which appears appropriate in the setting of this study. Persistent behavior was indeed related to small or moderate positive biopsychosocial outcomes, before and after treatment. Moreover feeling able to return to work was related to lower avoidance. Further studies should test the efficacy of motivational strategies that may promote functional task-contingent persistence and reduce avoidance of painful tasks
