Exploring small energy scales with x-ray absorption and dichroism
Soft x-ray linear and circular dichroism (XLD, XMCD) experiments at the Ce
M edges are being used to determine the energy scales characterizing
the Ce degrees of freedom in the ultrathin ordered surface intermetallic
CeAg/Ag(111). We find that all relevant interactions, i. e. Kondo
scattering, crystal field splitting and magnetic exchange coupling occur on
small scales. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of combining x-ray
absorption experiments probing linear and circular dichroism owing to their
strong sensitivity for anisotropies in both charge distribution and
paramagnetic response, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The East-West asymmetry of single muons at Campinas
The EASCAMP experiment, one of the few situated in the Southern Hemisphere, operating at the State University of Campinas, UNICAMP, Brazil, detected for two years single muons in the low energetic range. The primary cosmic
rays that produce these muons have a geomagnetic vertical cut-off of 10.6 GV. We studied the azimuthal distribution of three million single muons obtaining an East-West asymmetry of AEW = ( 8.91 ± 0.04)%. Another analysis concerned with the atmospheric muons propagation index is performed comparing the experimental zenith angular distribution and a simulated isotropic cosmic rays distribution
A Healthy Brain: Use It or Lose It!
Challenging your muscles makes for strong healthy muscles, and challenging your brain cells makes for a strong healthy brain. Build up your brain’s cognitive reserve – create a well-connected, high-capacity brain – through overall healthy behaviors (diet and exercise) and making mentally challenging activities part of your daily life. The more options your brain has to get its signals sent, the better able it is to handle areas of damage. A well-connected brain may be better able to delay or prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s
Psychological Stress Among Risks for Alzheimer\u27s Disease
This fact sheet defines stress, stressors and reaction to them, what stress does to our brain and body, and how stress effects can accumulate over time. It also includes tips on reducing the effects of stress on the brain
Late-Life Depression
This fact sheet describes late-life depression, including what it is, how common it is, risk factors, where to get help, treatments, suicide risks, and how depression relates to dementia
The development of behavior problems among disabled and non-disabled children in England
This study identifies the incidence and development of disabled children’s problem behaviors (i.e., conduct, peer, hyperactivity, and emotional problems) during the early years. Using the Millennium Cohort Study, a nationally representative UK study, and a measure of disability anchored in the UK legal definition, we estimate growth curve models tracking behavior problems from ages 3 to 7. We examine whether disabled girls’ and boys’ behavior differs from their non-disabled peers, and whether it converges with or diverges from them over time. We investigate whether parenting and the home environment moderate associations between disability and behavior. We show that disabled children exhibit more behavior problems than non-disabled children at age 3, and their trajectories from ages 3 to 7 do not converge. Rather, disabled children, particularly boys, show increasing gaps in peer problems, hyperactivity, and emotional problems over time. We find little evidence that parenting moderates these associations
