Abstract: At the end of the nineteenth century colonial Java was in a state of rural poverty and misery just as it now is. The standard of living was declining due to a combination of crop failures, a rapidly growing Javanese population, onerous tax burdens and an expensive Aceh war. Colonial exploitation was at its highest point. A small elite of Dutch entrepreneurs (in particular the owners of sugar-factories) and Javanese chiefs, working closely together, enriched themselves. The rich became richer, the poor poorer. The old liberal axiom that, with few exceptions, the state should not interfere with economic life and regulations still prevailed. The free play of forces in society, or \u27free labour\u27, dominated the market economy with hardly any legal protection of the poor and the powerless, the small peasant, the coolie on the plantation or in the factory. It was therefore misleading to call the last decade of the last century a period of \u27lesser or declining welfare\u27 (mindere welvaart) as the Dutch used to do. La imbricación entre las historias de vida y la educación popular se ha planteado a raíz de la aparición en Francia de la obra Historias de vida colectiva y educación popular (J.L. Le Grand , M. Coulon, 2000). Pero las historias de vida en educación popular no se limitan a las historias de vida colectivas, éstas jalonan nuestro entorno, en ocasiones incluso a nuestras espaldas, en nuestro día a día. Se trate de oposición o de emancipación, una voluntad política de transformación por el relato conlleva estas actividades narrativas singulares o plurales. Rehabilitación de trozos enteros de Historia o rehabilitación de historias singulares, se trata siempre de vidas ocultas que es necesario sacar a la luz con el objetivo de proponer o de oponer otra visión del mundo. El hecho de escribir una historia, un testimonio, puede tener sentido hasta producir política o, al menos, hasta inscribirla en una gestión de educación popular. En este contexto, ¿cómo permitir al narrador contarse plenamente mientras que está sumido en su propia biografización? ¿de qué emancipación hablamos cuando el relato personal subjetivo se hace obligado? La postura del investigador-recopilador de historias de vida debe ser interrogada ya que se antoja central en una conducta ambiciosa de la educación popular.The question of the interweaving of life stories and popular education was raised recently by the publication in France of the work Histoires de vie collective et éducation populaire. But life stories in popular education include more than collective lives. They mark out our neighbourhoods, sometimes unbeknown to us, in our daily life. Whether it will be dissent or emancipation, a political intent to transform through narration underlies these individual or collective narrative activities. Rehabilitation of whole parts of History or rehabilitation of individual stories, they are all hidden stories to be brought to light to offer or to oppose a different vision of the world. Writing a story, testifying can give meaning, to the extent of producing a political statement or at least, of making it part of a popular education process. In this context, how can the narrator tell himself fully when he is submitted to his own biographisation and what kind of emancipation do we refer to when narrating the self becomes an injunction? The position of the researcher-collector of life stories has to be questioned when it becomes central in an approach that aims for popular education

Parler de soi, écrire sa vie au travail : le « moment » de la grève tout au long du journal d’un cheminot

Les pratiques autobiographiques peuvent conduire à des formes variées d’écriture. Celle du journal a été choisie par l’ouvrage de Christian Verrier, Poser le sac, Journal de grève, 1995, paru en 2006, à partir duquel cette contribution s’attache à un temps important dans l’ordinaire du travail des cheminots : le moment de la grève. Au fil de l’actualité, la narration dévoile de l’intérieur, en toute subjectivité, les multiples facettes de cette situation complexe qui sera considérée ici comme une dimension à part entière du travail et de sa culture. Étudiant la spécificité de cet ouvrage et son intérêt comme clé d’entrée pour l’analyse d’un mouvement social tel que celui de 1995, l’article interroge successivement les temps et les lieux du conflit au travail, les reconfigurations qu’il induit ainsi que ses acteurs, qui apparaissent dans le récit sous la forme de « personnages » dynamiques. Le contexte externe à la grève et au monde ferroviaire est également abordé, de même que l’inscription historique et mémorielle du mouvement dans la conscience contemporaine. L’article est enfin enrichi d’un entretien avec Christian Verrier qui se livre à une lecture critique des enjeux de son travail et à un retour sur son parcours atypique.Autobiographical practices can take many forms in their writing. The one chosen by the book of Christian Verrier, Poser le sac, Journal de grève, 1995, published in 2006, is the diary (or more precisely the daily notes). Through this work, the article addresses an important moment in ordinary life at work of railwaymen: the strike. Following the course of current events, from inside and in a subjective view, the narration reveals the numerous facets of this « moment » which will be considered here a full part of work and its culture. Studying the specificities of the book and its usefullness in the understanding of social movements as the 1995 one in France, the article investigates successively times and places of the work conflict, induced reconfigurations as well as actors, turned in the narrative into dynamic « characters ». The context external to the strike or to the railway world is also approached here, as well as the historical and memory inheritance of the movement in contemporary consciousness. At last, the article is enriched by an interview with Christian Verrier, who offers a critical reading of his work’s stakes and of his own atypical career
