Nondiffusive suprathermal ion transport in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas
We investigate suprathermal ion dynamics in simple magnetized toroidal
plasmas in the pres- ence of electrostatic turbulence driven by the ideal
interchange instability. Turbulent fields from fluid simulations are used in
the non-relativistic equation of ion motion to compute suprathermal tracer ion
trajectories. Suprathermal ion dispersion starts with a brief ballistic phase,
during which particles do not interact with the plasma, followed by a
turbulence interaction phase. In this one simple system, we observe the entire
spectrum of suprathermal ion dynamics, from subdiffusion to superdiffusion,
depending on beam energy and turbulence amplitude. We estimate the duration of
the ballistic phase and identify basic mechanisms during the interaction phase
that determine the character of suprathermal ion dispersion upon the beam
energy and turbulence fluctuation amplitude.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted in PR
Turbulence driven particle transport in Texas Helimak
We analyze the turbulence driven particle transport in Texas Helimak (K. W.
Gentle and Huang He, Plasma Sci. and Technology, 10, 284 (2008)), a toroidal
plasma device with one-dimensional equilibrium with magnetic curvature and
shear. Alterations on the radial electric field, through an external voltage
bias, change spectral plasma characteristics inducing a dominant frequency for
negative bias values and a broad band frequency spectrum for positive bias
values. For negative biased plasma discharges, the transport is high where the
waves propagate with phase velocities near the plasma flow velocity, an
indication that the transport is strongly affected by a wave particle resonant
interaction. On the other hand, for positive bias the plasma has a reversed
shear flow and we observe that the transport is almost zero in the shearless
radial region, an evidence of a transport barrier in this region.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
Pathophysiology of Asthma and Chronic Obstuctive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
“Asthma is a disease characterized by an increased responsiveness of the trachea and bronchi to various stimuli and manifested by a widespread narrowing of the airways that changes in severity either spontaneously or in response to therapy.” The airway narrowing is the end result of some combination of bronchial muscle contraction, tissue inflammation, mucosal edema, and luminal occlusion by cellular debris and thickened secretions. During the last decade, basic and applied research has shed light on the physiology of the above changes and has led to breakthroughs in therapy and the more rational use of older and newer therapeutic agents, both separately and together
A robust method for measurement of fluctuation parallel wavenumber in laboratory plasmas
Measuring the parallel wavenumber is fundamental for the experimental characterization of electrostatic instabilities. It becomes particularly important in toroidal geometry, where spatial inhomogeneities and curvature can excite both drift instabilities, whose wavenumber parallel to the magnetic field is finite, and interchange instabilities, which typically have vanishing parallel wavenumber. We demonstrate that multipoint measurements can provide a robust method for the discrimination between the two cases

Scanning gate microscopy of current-annealed single layer graphene
We have used scanning gate microscopy to explore the local conductivity of a
current-annealed graphene flake. A map of the local neutrality point (NP) after
annealing at low current density exhibits micron-sized inhomogeneities.
Broadening of the local e-h transition is also correlated with the
inhomogeneity of the NP. Annealing at higher current density reduces the NP
inhomogeneity, but we still observe some asymmetry in the e-h conduction. We
attribute this to a hole doped domain close to one of the metal contacts
combined with underlying striations in the local NP.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
