Complexity bounds on supermesh construction for quasi-uniform meshes
Projecting fields between different meshes commonly arises in computational
physics. This operation requires a supermesh construction and its computational
cost is proportional to the number of cells of the supermesh . Given any two
quasi-uniform meshes of and cells respectively, we show under
standard assumptions that n is proportional to . This result
substantially improves on the best currently available upper bound on and
is fundamental for the analysis of algorithms that use supermeshes
Response of Fishes to Revetment Placement
Routine fish sampling with hoop nets was conducted monthly from April through December 1978 along natural and revetted riverbanks on the lower Mississippi River near Eudora, Arkansas, to monitor changes in fish populations affected by placement of new revetment for bank protection. Eighteen species of fish were collected with four species comprising over 75% of the total catch. During the months prior to revetment placement, freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens, was the most abundant (32.7% of the catch) species collected. Following in abundance were the flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, (9.8%), common carp, Cyprinus carpio, (7.8%), and blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, (3.3%). After revetment placement in August 1978, the freshwater drum was again the most abundant component, comprising 9.7% of the catch. Gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedianum, flathead catfish, and blue catfish followed in abundance and comprised 8.9, 4.1, and 3.4% of the total catch, respectively. Catch per effort data indicated that fish were generally more abundant at natural bank stations than revetted bank stations but the difference was not significant. The study suggests that fish inhabiting natural riverbank habitat recover quite rapidly from bank perturbation caused by the placement of revetment
Superorbital Period in the High Mass X-ray Binary 2S 0114+650
We report the detection of a superorbital period in the high-mass X-ray
binary 2S 0114+650. Analyses of data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM) from 1996 January 5 to 2004 August 25 reveal a
superorbital period of 30.7 +/- 0.1 d, in addition to confirming the previously
reported neutron star spin period of 2.7 h and the binary orbital period of
11.6 d. It is unclear if the superorbital period can be ascribed to the

Solcore: A multi-scale, python-based library for modelling solar cells and semiconductor materials
Computational models can provide significant insight into the operation
mechanisms and deficiencies of photovoltaic solar cells. Solcore is a modular
set of computational tools, written in Python 3, for the design and simulation
of photovoltaic solar cells. Calculations can be performed on ideal,
thermodynamic limiting behaviour, through to fitting experimentally accessible
parameters such as dark and light IV curves and luminescence. Uniquely, it
combines a complete semiconductor solver capable of modelling the optical and
electrical properties of a wide range of solar cells, from quantum well devices
to multi-junction solar cells. The model is a multi-scale simulation accounting
for nanoscale phenomena such as the quantum confinement effects of
semiconductor nanostructures, to micron level propagation of light through to
the overall performance of solar arrays, including the modelling of the
spectral irradiance based on atmospheric conditions. In this article we
summarize the capabilities in addition to providing the physical insight and
mathematical formulation behind the software with the purpose of serving as

A Multicoloured View of 2S 0114+650
We report the results of radio and X-ray observations of the high mass X-ray
binary 2S 0114+650, made with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer respectively. No emission was detected at radio
wavelengths. The neutral hydrogen column density was found to vary over the
orbital period, while no variability over the the super-orbital period was
observed. We discuss the causes of the observed relationships and the

Searching for X-ray sources in nearby late-type galaxies with low star formation rates
Late type non-starburst galaxies have been shown to contain X-ray emitting
objects, some being ultraluminous X-ray sources. We report on XMM-Newton
observations of 11 nearby, late-type galaxies previously observed with the
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in order to find such objects. We found 18 X-ray
sources in or near the optical extent of the galaxies, most being point-like.
If associated with the corresponding galaxies, the source luminosities range
from erg s to erg s. We
found one ultraluminous X-ray source, which is in the galaxy IC 5052, and one
source coincident with the galaxy IC 4662 with a blackbody temperature of
keV that could be a quasi-soft source or a quiescent neutron
star X-ray binary in the Milky Way. One X-ray source, XMMU J205206.0691316,
is extended and coincident with a galaxy cluster visible on an HST image. The
X-ray spectrum of the cluster reveals a redshift of and a
temperature of 3.60.4 keV. The redshift was mainly determined by a cluster
of Fe XXIV lines between the observed energy range keV.Comment: 8 pages, to appear in MNRA
Data transmission with variable-redundancy error control over a high-frequency channel
Results of computations and field tests on a binary-data-transmission system, operating at 1 kbaud over an h.f. channel, are presented. Error correction is effected by means of error detection and automatic request for repeat, via a feedback channel (a Post Office private line). A set of short, fixed-block-length cyclic codes is available, a code of appropriate redundancy being automatically selected to match the varying channel conditions. The decision about which code to use is made at the receiver, and the transmitter is informed via the feedback channel. The results show that relatively simple, reliable, and efficient data communication can be realised by this means
