    Individual and Organizational Factors in the Interchangeability of Paid Staff and Volunteers: Perspectives of Volunteers

    This study builds upon earlier studies of the degree of interchangeability between volunteers and paid staff in nonprofit organizations. While these earlier studies were from an organization perspective, this study is from the perspective of volunteers, and looks at individual and organizational characteristics in all types of organizations—nonprofits, for-profits, government agencies, and others. The findings indicate that 10.8% of volunteers reported replacing a paid staff member, 3.1% permanently. Volunteers also reported being replaced by paid staff: 7.6% reported being replaced, 2.1% permanently. The study suggests that organizations utilize a co-production model and appear to interchange their paid staff and volunteers when needed in tasks requiring higher-level skills

    The effect of food environments on fruit and vegetable intake as modified by time spent at home: a cross-sectional study.

    OBJECTIVE: There is a growing body of research that investigates how the residential neighbourhood context relates to individual diet. However, previous studies ignore participants' time spent in the residential environment and this may be a problem because time-use studies show that adults' time-use pattern can significantly vary. To better understand the role of exposure duration, we designed a study to examine 'time spent at home' as a moderator to the residential food environment-diet association. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. SETTINGS: City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: 2411 adults aged 25-65. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE: Frequency of vegetable and fruit intake (VFI) per day. RESULTS: To examine how time spent at home may moderate the relationship between residential food environment and VFI, the full sample was split into three equal subgroups--short, medium and long duration spent at home. We detected significant associations between density of food stores in the residential food environment and VFI for subgroups that spend medium and long durations at home (ie, spending a mean of 8.0 and 12.3 h at home, respectively--not including sleep time), but no associations exist for people who spend the lowest amount of time at home (mean=4.7 h). Also, no associations were detected in analyses using the full sample. CONCLUSIONS: Our study is the first to demonstrate that time spent at home may be an important variable to identify hidden population patterns regarding VFI. Time spent at home can impact the association between the residential food environment and individual VFI

    A descriptive analysis of the Canadian prehospital and transport transfusion (CAN-PATT) network

    Objective Out-of-hospital blood transfusion (OHBT) is becoming increasingly common across the prehospital environment, yet there is significant variability in OHBT practices. The Canadian Prehospital and Transport Transfusion (CAN-PATT) network was established to collaborate, standardize, and evaluate the effectiveness of out-of-hospital blood transfusion (OHBT) across Canada. The objectives of this study are to describe the setting and organizational characteristics of CAN-PATT member organizations and to provide a cross-sectional examination of the current OHBT practices of CAN-PATT organizations. Methods This was a cross-sectional examination of all six critical care transport organizations that are involved in CAN-PATT network. Surveys were sent to identified leads from each organization. The survey focused on three main areas of interest: 1) critical care transport organizational service and coverage, 2) provider, and crew configurations, and 3) OHBT transfusion practices. Results All six surveys were completed and returned. There are a total of 30 critical care transport bases (19 rotor-wing, 20 fixed-wing and 6 land) across Canada and 11 bases have a blood-on-board program. Crew configurations very between organizations as either dual paramedic or paramedic/nurse teams. Median transport times range from 30 to 46 minutes for rotor-wing assets and 64 to 90 minutes for fixed-wing assets. Half of the CAN-PATT organizations started their out-of-hospital blood transfusion programs within the last three years. Most organizations carry at least two units of O-negative, K-negative red blood cells and some organizations also carry group A thawed plasma, fibrinogen concentrate and/or prothrombin complex concentrate. All organizations advocate for early administration of tranexamic acid for injured patients suspected of bleeding. All organizations return un-transfused blood components to their local transfusion medicine laboratory within a predefined timeframe to reduce wastage. Conclusions Variations in OHBT practices were identified and we have suggested considerations for standardization of transfusion practices and patient care as it relates to OHBT. This standardization will also enable a robust means of data collection to study and optimize outcomes of patients receiving OHBT. A fulsome description of the participating organizations within CAN-PATT should enhance interpretation of future OHBT studies that will be conducted by this network

The wide scope of knowledge related questions in terms of applicability and alternative approaches has led to the fragmentation of research. Nevertheless, one can identify a continuing tradition which analyses various aspects of the generation, dissemination and use of knowledge in the economy

    Embedded Test Engine For Efficient At-Speed Scan Testing and Performance Binning of Microprocessors

    In this paper a modified architecture for at-speed scan testing is presented. This new architecture addresses the trend in the semiconductor industry for increased at-speed structural testing. The proposed architecture offers reduced time for standard at-speed testing, and, in particular, substantial savings for the repeated atspeed testing required for microprocessor speed and performance binning. The architecture has been demonstrated on UMC 0.18μm and has achieved with little die overhead

    Characterization of a highly glycosylated form of the human cytomegalovirus HLA class I homologue gpUL18

    Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) gpUL18 is a HLA class I (HLA-I) homologue with high affinity for the inhibitory receptor LIR-1/ILT2. The previously described 67 kDa form of gpUL18 is shown here to be sensitive to endoglycosidase-H (EndoH). A novel form of gpUL18 with a molecular mass of ~160 kDa and resistance to EndoH was identified in cells infected with HCMV strain AD169 or the low passage HCMV isolates Merlin and Toledo. The 67 kDa EndoH-sensitive gpUL18 glycoform was detected earlier in a productive infection (from 24 h post-infection) than the slower-migrating EndoH-resistant glycoform (from 72 h post-infection). Deletion of the US2–US11 region from the HCMV genome was associated with a substantial up-regulation of endogenous HLA-I in infected cells, but had no obvious effect on the gpUL18 expression pattern. Vaccinia virus and adenovirus vectors were used to further analyse gpUL18 expression. Depending on the delivery vector system, differences in the electrophoretic motility of the EndoH-resistant >105 kDa form of gpUL18, but not the EndoH-sensitive 67 kDa form, were observed; post-translational modification of the higher molecular mass glycoform appears to be influenced by active virus infection and vector delivery. The EndoH-sensitive 67 kDa gpUL18 had a rapid turnover, while the maturation to the EndoH-resistant >105 kDa form was relatively slow and inefficient. However, synthesis of the EndoH-resistant >105 kDa form was enhanced with elevated levels of β(2)-microglobulin. When expressed by using an adenovirus vector, both the EndoH-sensitive 67 kDa and the EndoH-resistant >105 kDa gpUL18 forms could be detected on the cell surface
