    Technical Efficiency Assessment of Dairy Farm in the South-west Region of Bangladesh

    The paper concentrates on the measurement of the total factor productivity of dairy farms in the south-west region of Bangladesh The study used stochastic frontier approach for analyzing the technical efficiency of the dairy farms Here seventy dairy farms are considered as a sample The data reveals that the number of labor and the quantity of food are statistically significant at a 1 percent level of significance The data also manifests that numerous farm-specific characteristics i e farm size farmer s age and amount of credit are statistically significant at 1 percent 10 percent and 10 percent respectively The range of technical efficiency for the farms varies from 26 percent minimum to 95 percent maximum where the mean value is 68 percent for the dairy farms of the south-west region This implies that an average output of milk production falls 32 percent short of maximum possible level Hence there is scope of improvement in this sector Therefore to improve the farm productivity government should provide proper training and medical treatment facilities for the farms so that the animals become healthy If it is possible to do so then the farm level production frontier will shift upwar

    Purpose: To investigate the crude n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Aphanamixis polystachya fruit for their cytotoxic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and thrombolytic activities. Methods: The fruit extracts were screened for major phytochemical compounds using in vitro established procedures. Antimicrobial and cytotoxic studies of the fruit extracts were conducted using disc diffusion and brine shrimp lethality bioassay methods, respectively, while an in vitro thrombolytic model was used to assess the clot lysis effect of the extracts with streptokinase as positive control. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by free radical scavenging activity using 2, 2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide assay as well as total phenolic content. Results: The fruit extracts were a rich source of phytochemicals and among the extracts n-hexane extract showed highest antimicrobial activity against Shigella dysenteriae (zone of inhibition: 9.7±0.2 mm) and Candida albicans (zone of inhibition: 8.8±0.3 mm) at a concentration of 1000μg/disc, whereas at the same concentration methanol extract showed highest zone of inhibition, 10.1±0.4mm, against Staphylococcus aureus. Compared to potassium permanganate with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 13.23 μg/ml in the brine shrimp lethality assay, the LC50 of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were 15.77, 17.51 and 141.37 μg/ml, respectively. All the extracts showed significant clot lysis activity (p < 0.001) with reference to negative control and % clot lysis of the extracts were approximately 13. Notable antioxidant activity of the methanol extract was observed unlike the other extracts. Conclusion: The results of the study demonstrated the potential cytotoxic, thrombolytic and antioxidant activities of the fruit extracts of A. polystachya and therefore further studies on the isolation and identification of active principles are required

    A Feasibility Study Assessing Acceptability and Supply Issues of Distributing LPG Cookstoves and Gas Cylinders to Pregnant Women Living in Rural Bangladesh for Poriborton: The CHANge Trial

    Our aim was to develop a protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cooking compared to usual cooking on perinatal mortality in pregnant women in rural Bangladesh. We, therefore, aimed to assess the feasibility of the planned trial and the barriers/facilitators of distributing LPG to rural households. We conducted a feasibility study in rural Bangladesh using an iterative design. We included pregnant women, their families, and local LPG stakeholders. We distributed LPG to households for 3 months (3 cylinders) and assessed process issues, acceptability, and cooking/food behaviours. We interviewed LPG stakeholders, and conducted focus groups and in-depth interviews with the users. The initial distribution and uptake of LPG were hampered by process issues, most of these were due to the non-established supply chain in the study area. LPG cooking was very acceptable and all users reported a preference for continued use, fuel-sparing was heavily practiced. Safety concerns were an initial issue. LPG stakeholders reported that LPG demand differed by season. This study demonstrated the feasibility of our planned trial and the need for safety messages. These results are relevant beyond our trial, including for programs of LPG fuel promotion
