    Learning terminological NaĂŻve Bayesian classifiers under different assumptions on missing knowledge

    Knowledge available through Semantic Web standards can easily be missing, generally because of the adoption of the Open World Assumption (i.e. the truth value of an assertion is not necessarily known). However, the rich relational structure that characterizes ontologies can be exploited for handling such missing knowledge in an explicit way. We present a Statistical Relational Learning system designed for learning terminological naĂŻve Bayesian classifiers, which estimate the probability that a generic individual belongs to the target concept given its membership to a set of Description Logic concepts. During the learning process, we consistently handle the lack of knowledge that may be introduced by the adoption of the Open World Assumption, depending on the varying nature of the missing knowledge itself

    A graph regularization based approach to transductive class-membership prediction

    Considering the increasing availability of structured machine processable knowledge in the context of the Semantic Web, only relying on purely deductive inference may be limiting. This work proposes a new method for similarity-based class-membership prediction in Description Logic knowledge bases. The underlying idea is based on the concept of propagating class-membership information among similar individuals; it is non-parametric in nature and characterised by interesting complexity properties, making it a potential candidate for large-scale transductive inference. We also evaluate its effectiveness with respect to other approaches based on inductive inference in SW literature

    Injecting Background Knowledge into Embedding Models for Predictive Tasks on Knowledge Graphs

    Embedding models have been successfully exploited for Knowledge Graph refinement. In these models, the data graph is projected into a low-dimensional space, in which graph structural information are preserved as much as possible, enabling an efficient computation of solutions. We propose a solution for injecting available background knowledge (schema axioms) to further improve the quality of the embeddings. The method has been applied to enhance existing models to produce embeddings that can encode knowledge that is not merely observed but rather derived by reasoning on the available axioms. An experimental evaluation on link prediction and triple classification tasks proves the improvement yielded implementing the proposed method over the original ones

    modCHIMERA: A novel murine closed-head model of moderate traumatic brain injury

    AbstractTraumatic brain injury is a major source of global disability and mortality. Preclinical TBI models are a crucial component of therapeutic investigation. We report a tunable, monitored model of murine non-surgical, diffuse closed-head injury—modCHIMERA—characterized by impact as well as linear and rotational acceleration. modCHIMERA is based on the Closed-Head Impact Model of Engineered Rotational Acceleration (CHIMERA) platform. We tested this model at 2 energy levels: 1.7 and 2.1 Joules—substantially higher than previously reported for this system. Kinematic analysis demonstrated linear acceleration exceeding injury thresholds in humans, although outcome metrics tracked impact energy more closely than kinematic parameters. Acute severity metrics were consistent with a complicated-mild or moderate TBI, a clinical population characterized by high morbidity but potentially reversible pathology. Axonal injury was multifocal and bilateral, neuronal death was detected in the hippocampus, and microglial neuroinflammation was prominent. Acute functional analysis revealed prolonged post-injury unconsciousness, and decreased spontaneous behavior and stimulated neurological scores. Neurobehavioral deficits were demonstrated in spatial learning/memory and socialization at 1-month. The overall injury profile of modCHIMERA corresponds with the range responsible for a substantial portion of TBI-related disability in humans. modCHIMERA should provide a reliable platform for efficient analysis of TBI pathophysiology and testing of treatment modalities.</jats:p

    Papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome due to parvovirus B19: a report of two simultaneous cases in cohabitant families.

    The so-called papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS) is a condition characterized by acute onset of intense erythema, edema and petechiae with a typical localization on the hands and feet, besides mucosal lesions of the oral cavity. The syndrome has a favorable and self-limited course, requiring only a symptomatic therapy. In the 50% of the cases described in literature (ninety cases in 22 years), is documented an acute infection caused by parvovirus B19 and in only two cases the onset of PPGSS is reported among different members of the same family. The aim of the work is to describe two cases of PPGSS arisen during a short time period in two family members affected by an acute parvovirus B19 infection found by serum sampling. The peculiarity of the study was the infrequence of the syndrome and the rareness of the description of PPGSS in rheumatology. This syndrome is usually described in dermatology, but it is also interesting for the rheumatologist because it comes in differential diagnosis with various autoimmune diseases

    Novel antiproliferative biphenyl nicotinamide: NMR metabolomic study of its effect on the MCF-7 cell in comparison with cisplatin and vinblastine

    A 1H-NMR-based metabolomic study was performed on MCF-7 cell lines treated with a novel nicotinamide derivative (DT-8) in comparison with two drugs characterized by a well-established mechanism of action, namely the DNA-metalating drug cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloridoplatinum(II), CDDP) and the antimitotic drug vinblastine (vinblastine, VIN). The effects of the three compounds, each one at the concentration corresponding to the IC50 value, were investigated, with respect to the controls (K), by the 1H-NMR of cells lysates and multivariate analysis (MVA) of the spectroscopic data. Relevant differences were found in the metabolic profiles of the different treatments with respect to the controls. A large overlap of the metabolic profiles in DT-8 vs. K and VIN vs. K suggests a similar biological response and mechanism of action, significantly diverse with respect to CDDP. On the other hand, DT8 seems to act by disorganizing the mitotic spindle and ultimately blocking the cell division, through a mechanism implying methionine depletion and/or S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) limitation

    1H-NMR Metabolomics Study after Foliar and Endo-Therapy Treatments of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca Infected Olive Trees: Medium Time Monitoring of Field Experiments

    Here we report the medium-term effects of foliar spray and endo-therapy treatments with different doses of a Cu/Zn citric acid biocomplex (Dentamet®) in Xylella fastidiosa infected olive trees of Salento, Apulia region (South-east Italy). Leaf extract samples from field-treated 150 years old olive trees cvs Ogliarola salentina and Cellina di Nardò were studied by 1H NMR-based metabolomics. The result of different applications of Dentamet® endo-therapy after 60, 120 and 180 days in comparison with traditional foliar spray treatment and water injection as a control have been investigated. The metabolic profile analyses, performed by 1H NMR-based metabolomic approach, indicated plant metabolites variations connected to the disease progression such as mannitol, quinic acid, and oleuropein related compounds. The best results, in terms of discrimination of the metabolic profiles with respect to water injection, were found for monthly endo-therapy treatments. Dentamet® foliar application demonstrated more specific time related progressive effectiveness with respect to intravascular treatments. Therefore, besides a possible more effective performance of endo-therapy with respect to foliar treatments, the need of further doses/frequencies trimming to obtain longterm results was also assessed. The present field studies confirmed the indication of Dentamet® effectiveness in metabolic variation induction, potentially linked with reducing the X. fastidiosa subspecies pauca related Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (OQDS) symptoms development
