Health Care Utilization And Costs For Dementia Patients In China
The number of people in the world living with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRD) continues to rise rapidly, which places a substantial burden on people with dementia (PWD), their families, and the society. Such a burden has been rising faster in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) where around two-thirds of PWD live. While prior research documents dementia prevalence in China and indicates its large geographic disparities, no study to date has documented the national pattern of health care utilization, quality and costs in China. The absence of knowledge would largely impede the effective allocation of resources for combating dementia and targeted policy interventions in China. This study made the first attempt to document inpatient care utilization, quality, and costs for ADRD patients in China using a nationally representative inpatient database. We first summarized geographic disparities in dementia prevalence in China, which was compared with disparities in care utilization and outcomes among hospitalized patients. We then explored to what extent demographic factors, insurance generosity, comorbidities, hospital infrastructure may explain variations in inpatient care utilization, quality and costs for dementia patients. Our findings suggest gaps in health equity and efficiency for this fast-growing population of dementia patients. Our results inform future work to improve chronic disease management and health insurance coverage to achieve a more affordable and equitable financial burden for PWD
Ispitivanje antioksidativne aktivnosti in vitro polipeptida meduze (Rhopilema esculentum)
Jellyfish gelatin was hydrolyzed by different proteases to obtain antioxidative polypeptides. The gelatin hydrolysate obtained by progressive hydrolysis using trypsin and Properase E exhibited the highest hydrolysis degree and antioxidant activity. Three series of gelatin polypeptides (SCP1, SCP2 and SCP3) were obtained by ultrafiltrating the gelatin hydrolysate through molecular mass cut-off membranes of 10, 6 and 2 kDa, respectively. Amino acid composition analysis showed that SCP3 had the highest total hydrophobic amino acid content. The in vitro antioxidant tests demonstrated that SCP2 had the strongest hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activities and metal chelating ability, while SCP3 showed the highest reducing power, antioxidant activity in linoleic acid emulsion system and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity. The results support the feasibility of jellyfish gelatin as a natural antioxidant polypeptide provider, and enzymatic hydrolysis and ultrafiltration could be potent future processing technologies to utilize the abundant jellyfish resource.
The effects of supervised exercise training on weight control and other metabolic outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes: a meta-analysis
Few studies have investigated the dose–response relationship between exercise and weight control. This study aimed to assess the effects of different types of supervised exercise training on weight control and other metabolic outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and explore the dose–response relationship between exercise volume/duration and these outcomes. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies between January 1980 and June 2019. Randomized control trials in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with supervised exercise training versus control treatment were included. The primary outcome was changes in body weight (kg). The secondary outcomes included changes in waist circumference (cm) and total body fat percentage (%). Forty-two randomized control trials, including 3,625 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. Overall, exercise treatment was associated with significant reduction in body weight (weighted mean differences, −1.10 kg; 95% CI [−1.58, −0.62], p
A study on text-score disagreement in online reviews
In this paper, we focus on online reviews and employ artificial intelligence
tools, taken from the cognitive computing field, to help understanding the
relationships between the textual part of the review and the assigned numerical
score. We move from the intuitions that 1) a set of textual reviews expressing
different sentiments may feature the same score (and vice-versa); and 2)
detecting and analyzing the mismatches between the review content and the
actual score may benefit both service providers and consumers, by highlighting
specific factors of satisfaction (and dissatisfaction) in texts.
To prove the intuitions, we adopt sentiment analysis techniques and we
concentrate on hotel reviews, to find polarity mismatches therein. In
particular, we first train a text classifier with a set of annotated hotel
reviews, taken from the Booking website. Then, we analyze a large dataset, with
around 160k hotel reviews collected from Tripadvisor, with the aim of detecting
a polarity mismatch, indicating if the textual content of the review is in
line, or not, with the associated score.
Using well established artificial intelligence techniques and analyzing in
depth the reviews featuring a mismatch between the text polarity and the score,
we find that -on a scale of five stars- those reviews ranked with middle scores
include a mixture of positive and negative aspects.
The approach proposed here, beside acting as a polarity detector, provides an
effective selection of reviews -on an initial very large dataset- that may
allow both consumers and providers to focus directly on the review subset
featuring a text/score disagreement, which conveniently convey to the user a
summary of positive and negative features of the review target.Comment: This is the accepted version of the paper. The final version will be

New Applications of Electrochemically Produced Porous Semiconductors and Nanowire Arrays
The growing demand for electro mobility together with advancing concepts for renewable energy as primary power sources requires sophisticated methods of energy storage. In this work, we present a Li ion battery based on Si nanowires, which can be produced reliable and cheaply and which shows superior properties, such as a largely increased capacity and cycle stability. Sophisticated methods based on electrochemical pore etching allow to produce optimized regular arrays of nanowires, which can be stabilized by intrinsic cross-links, which serve to avoid unwanted stiction effects and allow easy processing
Design of Experiments for Screening
The aim of this paper is to review methods of designing screening
experiments, ranging from designs originally developed for physical experiments
to those especially tailored to experiments on numerical models. The strengths
and weaknesses of the various designs for screening variables in numerical
models are discussed. First, classes of factorial designs for experiments to
estimate main effects and interactions through a linear statistical model are
described, specifically regular and nonregular fractional factorial designs,
supersaturated designs and systematic fractional replicate designs. Generic
issues of aliasing, bias and cancellation of factorial effects are discussed.
Second, group screening experiments are considered including factorial group
screening and sequential bifurcation. Third, random sampling plans are
discussed including Latin hypercube sampling and sampling plans to estimate
elementary effects. Fourth, a variety of modelling methods commonly employed
with screening designs are briefly described. Finally, a novel study
demonstrates six screening methods on two frequently-used exemplars, and their
performances are compared
Photonic Analogue of Two-dimensional Topological Insulators and Helical One-Way Edge Transport in Bi-Anisotropic Metamaterials
Recent progress in understanding the topological properties of condensed
matter has led to the discovery of time-reversal invariant topological
insulators. Because of limitations imposed by nature, topologically non-trivial
electronic order seems to be uncommon except in small-band-gap semiconductors
with strong spin-orbit interactions. In this Article we show that artificial
electromagnetic structures, known as metamaterials, provide an attractive
platform for designing photonic analogues of topological insulators. We
demonstrate that a judicious choice of the metamaterial parameters can create
photonic phases that support a pair of helical edge states, and that these edge
states enable one-way photonic transport that is robust against disorder.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
How do MNC R&D laboratory roles affect employee international assignments?
Research and development (R&D) employees are important human resources for multinational corporations (MNCs) as they are the driving force behind the advancement of innovative ideas and products. International assignments of these employees can be a unique way to upgrade their expertise; allowing them to effectively recombine their unique human resources to progress existing knowledge and advance new ones. This study aims to investigate the effect of the roles of R&D laboratories in which these employees work on the international assignments they undertake. We categorise R&D laboratory roles into those of the support laboratory, the locally integrated laboratory and the internationally interdependent laboratory. Based on the theory of resource recombinations, we hypothesise that R&D employees in support laboratories are not likely to assume international assignments, whereas those in locally integrated and internationally interdependent laboratories are likely to assume international assignments. The empirical evidence, which draws from research conducted on 559 professionals in 66 MNC subsidiaries based in Greece, provides support to our hypotheses. The resource recombinations theory that extends the resource based view can effectively illuminate the international assignment field. Also, research may provide more emphasis on the close work context of R&D scientists rather than analyse their demographic characteristics, the latter being the focus of scholarly practice hitherto
Rotating Higher Spin Partition Functions and Extended BMS Symmetries
We evaluate one-loop partition functions of higher-spin fields in thermal
flat space with angular potentials; this computation is performed in arbitrary
space-time dimension, and the result is a simple combination of Poincar\'e
characters. We then focus on dimension three, showing that suitable products of
one-loop partition functions coincide with vacuum characters of higher-spin
asymptotic symmetry algebras at null infinity. These are extensions of the
bms_3 algebra that emerges in pure gravity, and we propose a way to build their
unitary representations and to compute the associated characters. We also
extend our investigations to supergravity and to a class of gauge theories
involving higher-spin fermionic fields.Comment: 58 pages; clarifications and references added; version to be
