    Semisolid processing characteristics of AM series Mg alloys by rheo-diecasting

    The official published version of this Article can be found at the link below - Copyright @ 2006 ASM InternationalAn investigation has been made into the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of AM50, AM70, and AM90 alloys during rheo-diecasting, their processibility, and the resulting mechanical properties. It was found that solidification of AM series alloys under intensive melt shearing in the unique twin-screw slurry maker during rheo-diecasting gave rise to numerous spheroidal primary magnesium (Mg) particles that were uniformly present in the microstructure. As a result, the network of the beta-Mg17Al12 phase was consistently interrupted by these spheroidal and ductile particles. Such a microstructure reduced the obstacle of deformation and the harmfulness of the beta-Mg17Al12 network on ductility, and therefore improved the ductility of rheo-diecast AM alloys. It was shown that, even with 9 wt pct Al, the elongation of rheo-diecast AM90 still achieved (9 +/- 1.2) pct. Rheodiecasting thus provides an attractive processing route for upgrading the alloy specification of AM series alloys by increasing the aluminum (Al) content while ensuring ductility. Assessment of the processibility of AM series alloys for semisolid processing showed that high Al content AM series alloys are more suitable for rheo-diecasting than low Al content alloys, because of the lower sensitivity of solid fraction to temperature, the lower liquidus temperature, and the smaller interval between the semisolid processing temperature and the complete solidification temperature.This work is supported by the EPSR

    A variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism in regulatory region of SMYD3 coding for histone methyltransferase has been shown to be associated with colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and breast cancer in Japanese population. Aim of the study is to investigate the potential association between the functional SMYD3 tandem repeats polymorphism and HCC in Chinese population. Material and Methods: The case-control study included 200 HCC patients and 261 healthy controls. The VNTR polymorphism in the promoter of SMDY3 was genotyped by PCR and direct-sequencing analysis. Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were used to estimate the association between the polymorphisms and risk of HCC. Results: The allele frequencies for SMYD3 2 and 3 repeats were 15.71% and 84.29% among controls; and 12.75%, and 87.25% among cases (P = 0.22). The odds ratio for 3/3 versus 2/2 and 2/3 genotypes was 1.30 (P = 0.18). The frequencies of 3 alleles were not increased with HCC stage increased (trend test, P = 0.45). Conclusion: SMYD3 polymorphism is not associated with the occurrence and metastasis of HCC in Chinese population.Известно, что полиморфизм тандемных повторов (VNTR) в регуляторном участке гена SMYD3,кодирующем метилтрансферазу гистонов, ассоциирован с развитием рака прямой кишки, карциномы печени (HCC) и рака молочной железы и является популяционно-зависимой характеристикой. Цель работы состояла в исследовании возможной связи междуVNTR Геном SMYD3 и развитием HCC у населения Китая. Материалы и методы: исследование типа “случай-контроль” проводили с участием 200 пациентов с HCC и 261 здорового донора. Полиморфизм VNTR в промоторной области гена SMDY3генотипировали методами PCR. Для оценки связи между полиморфизмом и риском развитияHCC использовали отношение шансов (OR) и 95% доверительные интервалы. Результаты: частота аллелей для повторов SMYD3 2 и 3 составила 15,71 и 84,29% в контрольной группе и 12,75 и 87,25% — в группе больных (P = 0,22). OR Генотипов 3/3 versus 2/2 и 2/3 составило 1,30 (P = 0.18). Частота 3 аллелей не возрастала при повышении стадии заболевания (P = 0,45). Выводы: полиморфизм гена SMYD3 не ассоциирован с развитием и метастазированием HCC у населения Китая

    Generalized uncertainty principle and correction value to the black hole entropy

    Recently, there has been much attention devoted to resolving the quantum corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. In particular, many researchers have expressed a vested interest in the coefficient of the logarithmic term of the black hole entropy correction term. In this paper, we calculate the correction value of the black hole entropy by utilizing the generalized uncertainty principle and obtain the correction term caused by the generalized uncertainty principle. Because in our calculation we think that the Bekenstein-Hawking area theorem is still valid after considering the generalized uncertainty principle, we derive that the coefficient of the logarithmic term of the black hole entropy correction term is negative. This result is different from the known result at present. Our method is valid not only for single horizon spacetime but also for double horizons spacetime. In the whole process, the physics idea is clear and calculation is simple. It offers a new way for studying the condition that Bekenstein-Hawking area theorem is valid

    Manifestation of photonic band structure in small clusters of spherical particles

    We study the formation of the photonic band structure in small clusters of dielectric spheres. The first signs of the band structure, an attribute of an infinite crystal, can appear for clusters of 5 particles. Density of resonant states of a cluster of 32 spheres may exhibit a well defined structure similar to the density of electromagnetic states of the infinite photonic crystal. The resonant mode structure of finite-size aggregates is shown to be insensitive to random displacements of particles off the perfect lattice positions as large as half-radius of the particle. The results were obtained by an efficient numerical method, which relates the density of resonant states to the the scattering coefficients of the electromagnetic scattering problem. Generalized multisphere Mie (GMM) solution was used to obtain scattering matrix elements. These results are important to miniature photonic crystal design as well as understanding of light localization in dense random media.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Block Spin Density Matrix of the Inhomogeneous AKLT Model

    We study the inhomogeneous generalization of a 1-dimensional AKLT spin chain model. Spins at each lattice site could be different. Under certain conditions, the ground state of this AKLT model is unique and is described by the Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) state. We calculate the density matrix of a contiguous block of bulk spins in this ground state. The density matrix is independent of spins outside the block. It is diagonalized and shown to be a projector onto a subspace. We prove that for large block the density matrix behaves as the identity in the subspace. The von Neumann entropy coincides with Renyi entropy and is equal to the saturated value.Comment: 20 page

    Functional characterization of a melon alcohol acyl-transferase gene family involved in the biosynthesis of ester volatiles. Identification of the crucial role of a threonine residue for enzyme activity

    Volatile esters, a major class of compounds contributing to the aroma of many fruit, are synthesized by alcohol acyl-transferases (AAT). We demonstrate here that, in Charentais melon (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis), AAT are encoded by a gene family of at least four members with amino acid identity ranging from 84% (Cm-AAT1/Cm-AAT2) and 58% (Cm-AAT1/Cm-AAT3) to only 22% (Cm-AAT1/Cm-AAT4). All encoded proteins, except Cm-AAT2, were enzymatically active upon expression in yeast and show differential substrate preferences. Cm-AAT1 protein produces a wide range of short and long-chain acyl esters but has strong preference for the formation of E-2-hexenyl acetate and hexyl hexanoate. Cm-AAT3 also accepts a wide range of substrates but with very strong preference for producing benzyl acetate. Cm-AAT4 is almost exclusively devoted to the formation of acetates, with strong preference for cinnamoyl acetate. Site directed mutagenesis demonstrated that the failure of Cm-AAT2 to produce volatile esters is related to the presence of a 268-alanine residue instead of threonine as in all active AAT proteins. Mutating 268-A into 268-T of Cm-AAT2 restored enzyme activity, while mutating 268-T into 268-A abolished activity of Cm-AAT1. Activities of all three proteins measured with the prefered substrates sharply increase during fruit ripening. The expression of all Cm-AAT genes is up-regulated during ripening and inhibited in antisense ACC oxidase melons and in fruit treated with the ethylene antagonist 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), indicating a positive regulation by ethylene.
