Effects of the complex mass distribution of dark matter halos on weak lensing cluster surveys
Gravitational lensing effects arise from the light ray deflection by all of
the mass distribution along the line of sight. It is then expected that weak
lensing cluster surveys can provide us true mass-selected cluster samples. With
numerical simulations, we analyze the correspondence between peaks in the
lensing convergence -map and dark matter halos. Particularly we
emphasize the difference between the peak value expected from a dark
matter halo modeled as an isolated and spherical one, which exhibits a
one-to-one correspondence with the halo mass at a given redshift, and that of
the associated -peak from simulations. For halos with the same expected
, their corresponding peak signals in the -map present a wide
dispersion. At an angular smoothing scale of , our
study shows that for relatively large clusters, the complex mass distribution
of individual clusters is the main reason for the dispersion. The projection
effect of uncorrelated structures does not play significant roles. The
triaxiality of dark matter halos accounts for a large part of the dispersion,
especially for the tail at high side. Thus lensing-selected clusters
are not really mass-selected. (abridged)Comment: ApJ accepte
Integration of electric vehicle load and charging infrastructure in distribution network
While road electrification offers economic and environmental advantages, the non-conventional load due to electric vehicles usage and charging patterns pose challenges to distribution systems. The strategic design of charging infrastructure is becoming an essential element to facilitate power system planning and decision-making process. This paper presents a probabilistic method to derive charging patterns and estimate the electric vehicle demand profiles under uncertainty and variability. We apply a Gaussian copula to capture correlations between the key multivariates. We investigate the optimal location and size of charging stations based on queueing theory and intercepted traffic flow model. We examine the impact of the charging demand occurred in residential and public area on distribution expansion investment and incremental operational cost. The feasibility of the approach is tested on an interconnected distribution grid and transportation system. The case studies show that a careful probabilistic analysis of the randomness intrinsic to the charging behavior is of great importance to define and implement an integrated power and transportation system design
High Energy Neutrino Flashes from Far-Ultraviolet and X-ray Flares in Gamma-Ray Bursts
The recent observations of bright optical and x-ray flares by the Swift
satellite suggest these are produced by the late activities of the central
engine. We study the neutrino emission from far-ultraviolet and x-ray flares
under the late internal shock model. We show that the efficiency of pion
production in the highest energy is comparable to or higher than the unity, and
the contribution from such neutrino flashes to a diffuse very high energy
neutrino background can be larger than that of prompt bursts if the total
baryonic energy input into flares is comparable to the radiated energy of
prompt bursts. These signals may be detected by IceCube and are very important
because they have possibilities to probe the nature of flares (the baryon
loading, the photon field, the magnetic field and so on).Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, version published in PR
Analysis of bond-slip between concrete and steel bar in fire
This paper presents a robust model for predicting the bond-slip between the concrete and steel reinforced bar at elevated temperatures. The model is established based on a partly cracked thick-wall cylinder theory and the smeared cracking approach is adopted to consider the softening behaviour of concrete in tension. The model is able to consider a number of parameters: such as different concrete properties and covers; different steel bar diameters and geometries. The proposed model has been incorporated into the Vulcan program for 3D analysis of reinforced concrete structures in fire. The model has been validated against previous test results. The first author gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Iraqi Government for this Ph.D. project
Deep Adaptive Attention for Joint Facial Action Unit Detection and Face Alignment
Facial action unit (AU) detection and face alignment are two highly
correlated tasks since facial landmarks can provide precise AU locations to
facilitate the extraction of meaningful local features for AU detection. Most
existing AU detection works often treat face alignment as a preprocessing and
handle the two tasks independently. In this paper, we propose a novel
end-to-end deep learning framework for joint AU detection and face alignment,
which has not been explored before. In particular, multi-scale shared features
are learned firstly, and high-level features of face alignment are fed into AU
detection. Moreover, to extract precise local features, we propose an adaptive
attention learning module to refine the attention map of each AU adaptively.
Finally, the assembled local features are integrated with face alignment
features and global features for AU detection. Experiments on BP4D and DISFA
benchmarks demonstrate that our framework significantly outperforms the
state-of-the-art methods for AU detection.Comment: This paper has been accepted by ECCV 201
Refinement of primary Silicon crystals by novel Al-ZnS master alloy in solidification of Hypereutectic Al-Si Alloys
A novel Al-ZnS master alloy was developed by in situ reaction of Zn and Na2S in the Al melt. The results from this study left little doubt that this novel Al-ZnS master alloy was a promising refiner in solidification of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. It refined the primary silicon to the same extent as that achieved by adding P via Cu-P following the same refinement mechanism. The SEM work confirmed that there were many pre-formed ZnS particles contained in the master alloy. The optical metallography showed that the morphologies of the primary silicon crystals in the solidified Al-22Si alloy were drastically changed from irregular coarse morphology to fine regular particles. The primary silicon crystal was refined from 74 m to 26, 22, 24 m by adding 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 wt% ZnS respectively with holding time of 20 min, where as the average particle size of the primary silicon refined by 200 ppm P reduced to 20 m. With the increase of the holding time up to 1.5 hr, the primary silicon size will increase up to 33 m in adding 0.1 wt% ZnS
Influence of intensive melt shearing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al-Mg alloy with high added impurity content
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2011We have investigated the influence of melt conditioning by intensive shearing on the mechanical behavior and microstructure of Al-Mg-Mn-Fe-Cu-Si alloy sheet produced from a small book mold ingot with high added impurity content. The melt conditioned ingot has fine grains throughout its cross section, whereas a conventionally cast ingot, without melt shearing, has coarser grains and shows a wider variation of grain size. Both needle-shaped and coarse Chinese script iron bearing intermetallic particles are found in the microstructure at the center of the conventionally processed ingot, but for the melt conditioned ingot, only fine Chinese script intermetallic particles are observed. In addition to the iron bearing intermetallics, Mg2Si particles are also observed. The ingots were rolled to thin sheet and solution heat treated (SHT). During rolling, the iron-based intermetallics and Mg2Si particles are broken and aligned along the rolling direction. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation of the intensively melt sheared and processed sheet are all improved compared to the conventionally cast and processed sheet. Fractographic analysis of the tensile fracture surfaces shows that the clustered and coarse iron bearing intermetallic particles are responsible for the observed reduction in mechanical properties of the conventionally cast sheet. We have shown that by refining the initial microstructure of the ingot by intensive shear melt conditioning, it is possible to achieve improved mechanical properties at the final sheet gage of an AlMgMn alloy with a high content of impurities. This study is under the Technology

Into the central 10 pc of the most distant known radio quasar. VLBI imaging observations of J1429+5447 at z=6.21
Context: There are about 60 quasars known at redshifts z>5.7 to date. Only
three of them are detected in the radio above 1 mJy flux density at 1.4 GHz
frequency. Among them, J1429+5447 (z=6.21) is the highest-redshift radio quasar
known at present. These rare, distant, and powerful objects provide important
insight into the activity of the supermassive black holes in the Universe at
early cosmological epochs, and on the physical conditions in their environment.
Aims: We studied the compact radio structure of J1429+5447 on the
milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale, in order to compare the structural and
spectral properties with those of other two z~6 radio-loud quasars, J0836+0054
(z=5.77) and J1427+3312 (z=6.12). Methods: We performed Very Long Baseline
Interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations of J1429+5447 with the European VLBI
Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz on 2010 June 8, and at 5 GHz on 2010 May 27. Results:
Based on its observed radio properties, the compact but somewhat resolved
structure on linear scales of <100 pc, and the steep spectrum, the quasar
J1429+5447 is remarkably similar to J0836+0054 and J1427+3312. To answer the
question whether the compact steep-spectrum radio emission is a "universal"
feature of the most distant radio quasars, it is essential to study more, yet
to be discovered radio-loud active galactic nuclei at z>6.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication as a Letter to the
