Chicken or egg: financial development and economic growth in China, 1992-2004

This paper contributes to the empirical finance-growth literature by examining the relationship between financial depth, banking sector development, stock market development and economic growth in China. After an extensive survey on recent financial reforms in China, we apply Granger (non-)causality tests for non-stationary variables to examine long-run and short-run causality between economic growth and financial development. We find positive relationships between financial depth, banking sector development and growth. However, stock market development does not seem to have a positive effect on long-run economic growth.

Opposite angiogenic outcome of curcumin against ischemia and Lewis lung cancer models: in silico, in vitro and in vivo studies

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the angiogenic effects of curcumin on an ischemia and lung cancer model. To induce ischemia combined with lung cancer models, unilateral femoral arteries of C57BL/6 mice were disconnected on one side of the mouse and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells were xenografted on the opposite side. Angiogenic effects and underlying mechanisms associated with curcumin were investigated. Molecular target(s), signaling cascades and binding affinities were detected by Western blot, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), computer simulations and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) techniques. Curcumin promoted post-ischemic blood recirculation and suppressed lung cancer progression in inbred C57BL/6 mice via regulation of the HIF1α/mTOR/VEGF/VEGFR cascade oppositely. Inflammatory stimulation induced by neutrophil elastase (NE) promoted angiogenesis in lung cancer tissues, but these changes were reversed by curcumin through directly reducing NE secretion and stimulating α1-antitrypsin (α1-AT) and insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) production. Meanwhile, curcumin dose-dependently influenced endothelial cells (EC) tube formation and chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) neovascularization. Curcumin had opposite effects on blood vessel regeneration under physiological and pathological angiogenesis, which was effected through negative or positive regulation of the HIF1α/mTOR/VEGF/VEGFR cascade. Investigation of Current Returned Students’ Entrepreneurial Environment in China

One of the critical points of Chinese returned students’ entrepreneurship task is how to match distinguished external environment with their entrepreneurship development ability. In order to get the development status of Chinese returned students’ entrepreneurship, this paper investigates and analyzes the entrepreneurship environment and policies of various regions in China from the perspective of policy and environment. Through data compilation and coding analyses of the questionnaire survey of 357 different levels and departments’ returned students’ entrepreneurship policies, 1188 entrepreneurs, and 436 administrative staffs, we obtain returned students’ entrepreneurial team composition, status of their entrepreneurship development, cognition of entrepreneurship environment, and effectiveness of entrepreneurship policies, etc.. Based on existing problems, this paper gives some suggestions for further improving and optimizing Chinese returned students’ entrepreneurship environment.Key words: Returned students; Returned students’ entrepreneurship; entrepreneurship environmen
