    Modelling of three-axis Hall effect sensors based on integrated magnetic concentrator

    In this paper, we develop computational model to analyze the magnetic concentrating effect of integrated magnetic concentrator (IMC) on surrounding external magnetic field. We present an IMC-based three-axis Hall sensor model that enables to measure both inclination angles and absolute strength of a random external magnetic field. An IMC changes surrounding parallel magnetic components into perpendicular components, and therefore allows the horizontal Hall plates to measure both the strength and inclination angles of parallel external magnetic fields. We develop a finite element method (FEM) based model in COMSOL Multiphysics for the three-axis Hall sensor. Key factors influencing IMC’s magnetic concentrating effect, including material property and sensor structure, are investigated and discussed using the developed model. Comparing to traditional IMC-based three-axis angular sensors, a reference permanent magnet is no longer needed in the sensor. A measurement accuracy of 0.8 and 1.2 degrees are achieved respectively for the angles of α and θ of external magnetic field

    A Horizontal Hall Sensor 3D COMSOL Model

    This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) model of horizontal Hall sensor in COMSOL Multiphysics. The model aims to simulate the sensor’s performance in a straightforward way and provides a means to simulate more complex applications with other physics modules. Compared with traditional two-dimensional models, the three-dimensional model is more flexible in designing Hall sensor and shows great significance in verifying the performance of sensors with different materials and geometries. By changing model parameters and comparing simulation results, an optimal design solution can be achieved effectively and economically. The presented Hall sensor achieves a sensitivity of 0.0669 V/(VT). Basic circuit modules of a complete sensor system are also introduced

    Evaluation of LOXL1 polymorphisms in exfoliation syndrome in a Chinese population

    Purpose: To evaluate the association profiles of the lysyl oxidase-like 1 (LOXL1) gene polymorphisms with exfoliation syndrome in a Chinese population. Methods: Fifty unrelated patients with exfoliation syndrome and 125 control subjects were included. Genotypes of the three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of LOXL1 (rs1048661, rs3825942, and rs2165241) were analyzed by direct sequencing, and a case-control association study was performed. Results: The three SNPs were significantly associated with exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and exfoliation glaucoma (XFG) individually. After controlling for rs3825942 and rs2165241, the association between rs1048661 and XFS/XFG remained significant (p=3.6x10(-7)). At this SNP, the T allele and TT genotype conferred a 7.59-(95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.87-14.89, p=6.95x10(-11)) and 8.69-(95% CI: 4.15-18.20, p<1.00x10(-7)) fold increased risk to the disease. The alleles of T at rs1048661 and C at rs2165241 were found to be risk alleles in Chinese subjects, which were opposite to Caucasian individuals. The haplotypes T-G, defined by SNPs rs1048661 and rs3825942, and T-C by SNPs rs1048661 and rs2165241, were also significantly associated with the disorder. However when the genotypic or allelic frequencies of the three SNPs were compared between XFS and XFG, no significant difference was detected. Conclusions: LOXL1 is a susceptibility gene of XFS/XFG in the Chinese population, and the association is mainly attributed to SNP rs1048661. The risk alleles of rs1048661 and rs2165241 in Chinese subjects were found to be opposite to that of Caucasians.     Cellular communication system is a wireless communication system where the subscriber can move within a wide network coverage. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is a multiuser access technology that is each user uses a unique code contained in the access channel in the system. Calculation and determination of peak hours can be done by several methods such as: Average Daily Peak Hour (ADPH), Time Consistent Busy Hour (TCBH), Fixed Daily Measurement Hour (FDMH), Fixed Daily Measurement Period (FDMP). The effectiveness of the channel should be determined by occupancy both at inner city territory and outer city  territory location. Using design Erlang (Erl) for supply channel at Base Transceiver Station (BTS) that provided, BTS has a design Erlang of 369,83 Erl at inner city and it has a design Erlang of 241,8 Erl at outer city. Peak hour on the inner city occurred at 12:00 to 15:00, whereas the outer city of peak hour occurred at 18:00 to 21:00. Effectiveness value that determined by operator are : <20% = low occupancy (not effective), 21% to 69% = normal occupancy (effective), and > 70% = high occupancy (very effective).     Structural insights into Ca2+-activated long-range allosteric channel gating of RyR1

    Ryanodine receptors (RyRs) are a class of giant ion channels with molecular mass over 2.2 mega-Daltons. These channels mediate calcium signaling in a variety of cells. Since more than 80% of the RyR protein is folded into the cytoplasmic assembly and the remaining residues form the transmembrane domain, it has been hypothesized that the activation and regulation of RyR channels occur through an as yet uncharacterized long-range allosteric mechanism. Here we report the characterization of a Ca2+-activated open-state RyR1 structure by cryo-electron microscopy. The structure has an overall resolution of 4.9 angstrom and a resolution of 4.2 angstrom for the core region. In comparison with the previously determined apo/closed-state structure, we observed long-range allosteric gating of the channel upon Ca2+ activation. In-depth structural analyses elucidated a novel channel-gating mechanism and a novel ion selectivity mechanism of RyR1.     Fabrication of Durable Superhydrophobic Surface for Versatile Oil/Water Separation Based on HDTMS Modified PPy/ZnO

    Superhydrophobic materials have been widely applied in rapid removal and collection of oils from oil/water mixtures for increasing damage to environment and human beings caused by oil-contaminated wastewater and oil spills. Herein, superhydrophobic materials were fabricated by a novel polypyrrole (PPy)/ZnO coating followed by hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modification for versatile oil/water separation with high environmental and excellent reusability. The prepared superhydrophobic surfaces exhibited water contact angle (WCA) greater than 150° and SA less than 5°. The superhydrophobic fabric could be applied for separation of heavy oil or light oil/water mixtures and emulsions with the separation efficiencies above 98%. The coated fabric also realized highly efficient separation with harsh environmental solutions, such as acid, alkali, salt, and hot water. The superhydrophobic fabric still remained, even after 80 cycles of separation and 12 months of storage in air, proving excellent durability. These novel superhydrophobic materials have indicated great development potentials for oil/water separation in practical applications

    Cost–utility analysis of commonly used anti-glaucoma interventions for mild-to-moderate primary open-angle glaucoma patients in rural and urban China

    Objective An increasing number of studies have explored the clinical effects of antiglaucoma surgical procedures; however, economic evidence was scarce. We aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness between maximal medical treatment (MMT) and commonly used surgical procedures (trabeculectomy, Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation, gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy and ab interno canaloplasty).Design and setting A Markov model study.Participants A hypothetical cohort of 100 000 patients with mild-to-moderate primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).Outcomes Data were obtained from public sources. The main outcomes were incremental cost–utility ratios (ICURs) using quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Sensitivity analyses were conducted to verify the robustness and sensitivity of base-case results.Main results Both cumulative costs and QALYs gained from surgical procedures (US6045–US6045–US13 598, 3.33–6.05 QALYs) were higher than those from MMT (US3117–US3117–US6458, 3.14–5.66 QALYs). Compared with MMT, all surgical procedures satisfied the cost-effectiveness threshold (lower than US30501andUS30 501 and US41 568 per QALY gained in rural and urban settings, respectively). During the 5-year period, trabeculectomy produced the lowest ICUR (US21462andUS21 462 and US15 242 per QALY gained in rural and urban settings, respectively). During the 10-year-follow-up, trabeculectomy still produced the lowest ICUR (US13379perQALYgained)inurbansetting;however,gonioscopy−assistedtransluminaltrabeculotomy(US13 379 per QALY gained) in urban setting; however, gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (US19 619 per QALY gained) and ab interno canaloplasty (US18003perQALYgained)producedlowerICURsthantrabeculectomy(US18 003 per QALY gained) produced lower ICURs than trabeculectomy (US19 675 per QALY gained) in rural areas. Base-case results were most sensitive to the utilities and costs of initial treatment and maintenance.Conclusions The long-term cost-effectiveness of commonly used surgical procedures could be better than the short-term cost-effectiveness for mild-to-moderate POAG patients in China. Health economic studies, supported by more rigorous structured real-world data, are needed to assess their everyday cost-effectiveness

    Impact of primary glaucoma on health-related quality of life in China: the handan eye study

    Abstract Background We assessed health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and its determinants among rural glaucoma participants compared to age-matched normal controls in the population-based Handan Eye Study (HES), in rural Yongnian County, northern China. Methods We enrolled 99 adults with glaucoma (mean age 63.0 ± 11.0 years), including primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG, n = 67) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG, n = 32) and 102 controls (mean age 58.5 ± 5.3 years) with normal visual acuity and visual field and no history of glaucoma. Results of ophthalmic examinations and socioeconomic data were recorded. HRQOL was measured using the EQ-5D (converted to utility valves, UVs), and visual function (VF) and vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) were evaluated using the visual function-quality of life (VF-QOL) instrument. Primary and secondary outcome measures EQ-5D and VF-QOL scores. Results The mean UVs, VF, and VRQOL scores for glaucoma cases were 0.98 ± 0.04, 87.9 ± 15.2, and 95.5 ± 12.8, respectively, significantly worse than VF (94.4 ± 4.4) and VRQOL (100.0 ± 0.0) among controls, even after adjusting for age, gender, educational level, and family income (P = 0.015, P = 0.033). UVs were significantly lower among glaucoma participants with impaired VRQOL (55.4 ± 11.5) compared to those with normal VRQOL scores (99.1 ± 2.8) (UVs: 0.92 ± 0.08 vs. 0.99 ± 0.03, P = 0.036), also after adjustment for age and family income (P = 0.006). Participants with PACG had significantly lower VF and VRQOL scores compared to POAG (77.8 ± 21.4 vs. 92.9 ± 6.8, P < 0.001; 89.0 ± 18.1 vs. 98.7 ± 7.5, P < 0.001). Conclusion Participants with glaucoma have worse visual function and related quality of life compared to age-matched normal population controls. Participants with PACG have lower VF and VRQOL compared to those with POAG. UVs can be used for cost-effectiveness research and to support public health strategies for glaucoma in rural China
