    Winter Herbage Mass Accumulation and Animals Grazing Days of Set Stocking or Cell Grazing Dairy x Beef Systems in Southwest England

    Cell grazing (CG) has shown to increase the production per hectare by allowing higher stocking rates, greater grass production and higher herbage utilisation throughout the grazing season compared to set stocking (SS). Our objective was to compare the herbage growth rate during winter resting (WHGR, October/November to April) and the animals grazing days per ha (AGD-ha) of CG and SS systems grazed by dairy x beef steers. Three 1.75ha (1.5ha in 2018) plots and three 1.0ha were used for the SS and CG, respectively. Forty-two and 48 autumn born dairy x beef steer calves were split into six equal groups and randomly allocated to treatments in April 2018 and April 2020, respectively. In the second grazing seasons (2019 and 2021), the number of animals was reduced to keep stocking rates comparative to the prior year, and steers remained in the plots until finishing (October/November). Herbage mass (HM) was recorded weekly with a rising plate meter. The WHGR was estimated by subtracting the HM recorded at the end of the previous grazing season to the HM recorded at the beginning of the following season and divided by the number of days between readings. The AGD-ha was calculated by summing the days each animal grazed each area and divided by the size of the study enclosure. In three of the four years, the CG had fewer days of winter resting (157-175) than the SS (157-182), whereas the WHGR was greater in three of the four winters (average across years: 5.77 vs. 4.05 kg DM/ha per d, for CG and SS respectively). Despite the shorter winter rest, overall, the CG accumulated 37% more HM (average across years: 976 vs. 710 kg DM/ha) and had 78% more AGD-ha (1102 vs. 620 animal.d/ha) than SS. These differences do not seem to be driven by the herbage residual at the end of the grazing season but by the change in botanical composition across time

    The Discourses of “Wanted sa Radyo’s” VAW-related Episodes

    Today, the media holds an indisputable influence over public opinion, serving as a formidable tool for information dissemination, persuasion, and the molding of collective perspectives (Allen, 2017; Impe, 2019). This study conducted an in-depth examination of the discourse within the Philippines’ Radyo 5 program, 'Wanted sa Radyo,' hosted by broadcaster and senator, Raffy Tulfo (Afinidad-Bernardo, 2019). Recognized as a public service program aiming to assist those in need, this research specifically scrutinized episodes that shed light on the distressing issue of violence against women (UN Women, 2023). Through a comprehensive utilization of textual analysis as the methodology (McKee, 2003; Luo, 2019), this study aimed to ascertain how the program presented and addressed these sensitive issues during live broadcasts. The findings of this research showed that the program exhibited sensitivity when discussing the delicate topics that surrounded violence against women (GMA Integrated News, 2023). With careful consideration and tactful handling of such issues, Raffy Tulfo, the program's host, showcased a remarkable empathetic approach toward complainants while impartially interrogating the accused (Raffy Tulfo in Action, 2018). As a result, it became evident that 'Wanted sa Radyo' remained true to its core mission as a public service platform (ABS-CBN News, 2022). Shedding light on the effectiveness of public service program in amplifying marginalized voices, addressing pressing social concerns, and ultimately contributing to the betterment of society (Impe, 2019; Atkin, 2013). This aligns with the broader goals of media studies in understanding and evaluating the impact of media on society (Abowitz et al., 2010; Spitulnik, 1993)

    A new fluorescent oligonucleotide probe for in-situ identification of Microcystis aeruginosa in freshwater.

    contaminated water bodies (freshwater, brackish and marine areas). Among 150 known cyanobacteria genera,>40 species are able to produce toxins, which are natural compounds that differ from both a chemical and toxicological point of view and are responsible for acute and chronic poisoning in animals and humans. Among the main classes of cyanotoxins, microcystins are frequently found in the environment. Fast and accurate methods for unequivocally identifying microcystin-producing cyanobacteria, such as Microcystis aeruginosa in water bodies, are necessary to distinguish them from other non-toxic cyanobacteria and to manage and monitor algal blooms. For this purpose, we designed, developed and validated an oligonucleotide probe for FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) analysis to detect Microcystis aeruginosa at the species level even at relatively low concentrations in freshwater. The FISH probe, MicAerD03, was designed using the ARB software with the Silva database within the framework of the MicroCoKit project, also with the intention of adding it to the microarray from the EU project, μAQUA, for freshwater pathogens, which had only genus level probes for Microcystis. We tested various fixative methods to minimize the natural autofluorescence from chlorophyll-a and certain accessory pigments (viz., phycobilins and carotenoids). The FISH probe was tested on pure cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa, and then successfully applied to water samples collected from different sampling points of the Tiber River (Italy), using a laser confocal microscope. Subsequently, the probe was also conjugated at the 5′ end with horse-radish peroxidase (HRP-MicAerD03) to apply the CAtalysed Reported Deposition-FISH (CARD-FISH) for increasing the fluorescence signal of the mono-fluorescently labelled probe and make it possible to detect M. aeruginosa using an epifluorescence microscope. Samples taken within the EU MicroCokit project indicated thatmicroarray signals for Microcystis were coming from single cells and not colonial cells. We confirmed this with the CARD-FISH protocol used here to validate the microarray signals for Microcystis detected at the genus level in MicroCokit. This paper provides a new early warning tool for investigating M. aeruginosa at the species level even at low cell concentrations in surface water, which can be added to the μAqua microarray for all freshwater pathogens to complete the probe hierarchy for Microcystis aeruginosa

    The Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope

    The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of three science instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS comprises four separate spectrograph modules covering the wavelength range from 5.3 to 38micron with spectral resolutions, R \~90 and 600, and it was optimized to take full advantage of the very low background in the space environment. The IRS is performing at or better than the pre-launch predictions. An autonomous target acquisition capability enables the IRS to locate the mid-infrared centroid of a source, providing the information so that the spacecraft can accurately offset that centroid to a selected slit. This feature is particularly useful when taking spectra of sources with poorly known coordinates.
