The ALPINE-ALMA [C II] survey: Star-formation-driven outflows and circumgalactic enrichment in the early Universe
We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 ÎŒm emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4â â4. From the stacking analysis of the datacubes, we find that the combined [C II] core emission (|v|< 200 km sâ»Âč) of the higher-SFR galaxies is extended on physical sizes of âŒ30 kpc (diameter scale), well beyond the analogous [C II] core emission of lower-SFR galaxies and the stacked far-infrared continuum. The detection of such extended metal-enriched gas, likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by past outflows, corroborates previous similar studies, confirming that baryon cycle and gas exchanges with the circumgalactic medium are at work in normal star-forming galaxies already at early epochs
Corrections to Quark Asymmetries at LEP
The most precise measurement of the weak mixing angle sin^2(theta) at LEP is
from the forward-backward asymmetry e+e- --> bbbar at the Z-pole. In this note
the QED and electroweak radiative corrections to obtain the pole asymmetry from
the measured asymmetry for b- and c-quarks have been calculated using ZFITTER,
which has been amended to allow a consistent treatment of partial two-loop
corrections for the b-quark final asymmetries.
A total correction of dAfbb=0.0019+/-0.0002 and dAfbc=0.0064+/-0.0001 has
been found, where the remaining theoretical uncertainty is much too small to
explain the apparent discrepancy between sin^2(theta) obtained from Afbb and
from the left-right asymmetry at SLD
Deep ocean disposal of sewage sludge off Orange County, California: a research plan
Even though the discharge of sludge into the ocean via an outfall is not now permitted, this research plan has been prepared to show what could be learned with a full scale experimental sludge discharge of 150 dry tons/day by the County Sanitation Districts of Orange County into deep water (over 1000 feet). To provide a wide range of inputs and evaluation, a broad-based Research Planning Committee was established to advise the Environmental Quality Laboratory on the overall content and details of the research plan. Two meetings were held at EQL on: March 4-5, 1982: The entire Committee July 19-20, 1982: A working subgroup of the Committee The entire Committee is listed in Appendix B, with footnotes to indicate meeting attendance. Those unable to come to a meeting were asked to comment on the drafts by mail or telephone. Rotatin is a novel gene required for axial rotation and left- right specification in mouse embryos
The genetic cascade that governs left-right (L-R) specification is starting to be elucidated. In the mouse, the lateral asymmetry of the body axis is revealed first by the asymmetric expression of nodal, lefry2 and pitx2 in the left lateral plate mesoderm of the neurulating embryo. Here we describe a novel gene, rotatin, essential for the correct expression of the key L-R specification genes nodal, lefty and Pitx2. Embryos deficient in rotatin show also randomized heart looping and delayed neural tube closure, and fail to undergo the critical morphogenetic step of axial rotation. The amino acid sequence deduced from the cDNA is predicted to contain at least three transmembrane domains. Our results show a novel key player in the genetic cascade that determines L-R specification, and suggest a causal link between this process and axial rotation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
