Mechanism of development of pre-eclampsia linking breathing disorders to endothelial dysfunction

    Get PDF
High blood pressure is an important component of pre-eclampsia. The underlying mechanism of development of hypertension in pre-eclampsia is complicated and still remains obscure. Several theories have been advanced including endothelial dysfunction, uteroplacental insufficiency leading to generalized vasoconstriction, increased cardiac output, and sympathetic hyperactivity. Increased blood flow and pressure are thought to lead to capillary dilatation, which damages end-organ sites, leading to hypertension, proteinuria and edema. Additional theories have been put forward based on epidemiological research, implicating immunological and genetic factors. None of these theories have been substantiated. Based on a review of literature this paper postulates that the initiating event for the development of preeclampsia is intermittent hypoxia associated with irregular breathing during sleep, hypoapnea, apnea, inadequate respiratory excursions during the waking hours and inadequate cardiopulmonary synchronization (abnormal sympatho-vagal balance)

    RAM-Efficient External Memory Sorting

In recent years a large number of problems have been considered in external memory models of computation, where the complexity measure is the number of blocks of data that are moved between slow external memory and fast internal memory (also called I/Os). In practice, however, internal memory time often dominates the total running time once I/O-efficiency has been obtained. In this paper we study algorithms for fundamental problems that are simultaneously I/O-efficient and internal memory efficient in the RAM model of computation.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of ISAAC 2013, getting the Best Paper Awar

Presented at the fifth international conference on irrigation and drainage, Irrigation and drainage for food, energy and the environment on November 3-6, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah.Includes bibliographical references.Optimal management of irrigation systems and their efficient use of energy is a major global concern where energy resources are jeopardized. Effective solar irradiance in the United Arab Emirates is available most of the year which makes it easy to project PV (Photo Voltaic) system output and the produced flow and pressure produced by a PV-powered DC pump. A PV- irrigation system was developed in the experimental farm of the College of Food and Agriculture, United Arab Emirates University. In this paper an adaptive scheduling scheme is developed to provide an adaptive control of a photovoltaic powered irrigation system according to the availability of solar energy as well as the field conditions of the irrigated zones. Simulation of the PV irrigation system including PV module, pump and irrigation network is carried out using Matlabâ„¢ to predict power output using historical data, and water application rates accordingly. An executive irrigation schedule is also developed utilizing direct weather data from weather station to implement unexpected variation in weather conditions and field water requirements as well

Pertumbuhan dan Hasil Tanaman Tomat (Lycopersicum Esculentum Mill.) pada Pemberian Berbagai Jenis Mulsa

This research was conducted in Bulupountu Dusun Jaya, District Sigi Biromaru, Sigi in June to October 2015. This study was conducted to compare the effect of various mulch types (organic and inorganic) on the growth and yield of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill). This study uses a randomized block design consisted of five treatments, A0 = without mulch, A1= black plastic mulch, A2=silver plastic mulch, A3 = johar leaf mulch, A4 = rice straw mulch. Each treatment was repeated five times so that there are 25 experimental units. Mulching can increase growth and yield of tomato plants. Type silver plastic mulch provides the best growth and yield of tomato plants, especially on fruit weight parameters

Glycodelin (PAEP) gene promoter polymorphism rs760140467 C>T is associated with recurrent pregnancy loss

    Get PDF
In the absence of confirmed causes for around 50% of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) cases this study was conducted in order to evaluate the relationship between PAEP gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs760140467 C> T and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) in Palestinian women. A retrospective case-control study was carried out during the period (August 2015 to April 2016). A total of 200 females, 100 RPL patients and 100 control women without previous history of RPL were included in the study. PAEP (rs760140467 C> T) polymorphism was tested by PCR-RFLP. Statistically significant difference existed between RPL cases and controls in terms of the genotypic and allelic distribution of the tested polymorphism. PAEP" T/C" genotype and" T" allele were significantly higher in the RPL group. The study showed, for the first time, that the" C/T" genotype and the" T'allele of the tested polymorphism are strongly associated with RPL in the investigated population. This finding may lead to improved therapeutic approaches for those RPL cases

Propane Dehydrogenation Using Transition Metal Cluster Catalysts

    Get PDF
Our research seeks to determine the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction pathways using various transition-metal cluster catalysts. We are studying the first step of the reaction, in which a C-H bond is broken. This has been previously shown to be the rate-limiting step of the PDH reaction. We are calculating the PDH activation energy (Ea) using the Vienna Ab-Initio Simulation Package (VASP) in conjunction with the nudged elastic band algorithm. Thus far, we have studied Pt, Ta, and Ni clusters ranging in size from 2-10 atoms. Our goal is to better understand the dependence of Ea on metal type and cluster size

Sugar Content Estimation of Date (Phoenix dactylifern L.) Fruits in Tamr Stage

    Get PDF
Annual production of dates in the United Arab Emirates is about 250,000 tons which used to be consumed in tamr stage where fruit moisture content becomes less than 30%. Date sugar content is considered one of the most important fruit commercial characteristics where it is significant for both fresh consumption and fruit processing as well. In a previous research work Fadel et al. (2001) and Fadel et al. (2006) studied color properties of date fruits and introduced a novel computerbased method for date sugar content estimation. This method depends on calculating the intensities of the red, green, and blue components of fruit color via image processing algorithm. Color ingredients intensity was correlated to glucose, fructose and sucrose levels. In this paper, two date varieties were focused on in order to validate the concept. Lolo and Bomaan are among the most famous date varieties in the UAE. In order to enhance research credibility, fructose and glucose content were determined for each variety using the HPLC (AOAC 1990). Using the abovementioned concept, sugar content was estimated in 43 samples of each variety and compared with the chromatography results. The results showed that, for the two varieties, glucose and fructose might be estimated using this technique with a minimum accuracy of about 86%. This paper focuses on the validation of this technique to evaluate its practicability
