The 2004 UTfit Collaboration Report on the Status of the Unitarity Triangle in the Standard Model

Using the latest determinations of several theoretical and experimental parameters, we update the Unitarity Triangle analysis in the Standard Model. The basic experimental constraints come from the measurements of |V_ub/V_cb|, Delta M_d, the lower limit on Delta M_s, epsilon_k, and the measurement of the phase of the B_d - anti B_d mixing amplitude through the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B^0 to J/psi K^0 decays. In addition, we consider the direct determination of alpha, gamma, 2 beta + gamma and cos(2 beta) from the measurements of new CP-violating quantities, recently performed at the B factories. We also discuss the opportunities offered by improving the precision of the various physical quantities entering in the determination of the Unitarity Triangle parameters. The results and the plots presented in this paper can also be found at http://www.utfit.org, where they are continuously updated with the newest experimental and theoretical results.Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures. Corneal Pachymetry and Endothelial Microscopy by Slit-Lamp

    Get PDF
A slit-lamp biomicroscope Visionix VX75 has been equipped with a high-resolution digital sensor. A specular reflection technique at an angular magnification of 36× performed by the slit-lamp biomicroscope is used to develop a procedure to (i) measure the thickness of the human cornea by measuring the distance between the two reflections of its anterior and posterior surfaces and (ii) capture suitable images for morphometric analyses of the corneal endothelium’s cell mosaic. The examples of morphometric analysis of these images are reported. The biases due to the dioptric power of the anterior surface of the cornea, the oblique observation, and the asymmetry of the digital biomicroscope are discussed. These biases can be corrected by a specific calibration

Common Peroneal Nerve Injury Related to Small Saphenous Vein Surgery: Report of 2 Cases and Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Although iatrogenic damage is less often involved, deep nerve injuries are reported especially as a result of small saphenous vein (SSV) dissection. Complete or partial division of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) during varicose vein operations causes substantial and serious disability. Most CPN injuries recover spontaneously; nonetheless, some require nerve surgery. Treatment depends on the nature of CPN injury. This report chronicles 2 instances of CPN injury after SSV surgery, addressing treatment strategies and therapeutic gains. The pertinent literature is also reviewed

Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel. The search for singly produced excited leptons and quarks establishes upper limits on the ratio of the coupling of the excited fermio

An efficient method for the correction of iatrogenic symmastia: A case series

    Get PDF
Background: Symmastia is a medial confluence of the breasts, produced by a web of skin and fat merged across the midline, that generates the disappearance of the intermammary sulcus. Apart from the rare congenital cases, this condition is usually a result of technical complications during breast augmentation surgery. This article describes a simple and reliable method for correcting symmastia. Methods: From November 2006 to June 2015, we treated 10 patients with acquired symmastia who had previously undergone an implant-based reconstruction. We performed a crescent-shape medial capsulectomy and we then performed an adequate and resistant closure with a substitute device, consisting of a Tuohy epidural needle and polydioxanone sutures, which are easily accessible and inexpensive. The process outcome was successful and resulted in a normal cleavage between the breasts. Results: Mean follow-up was 24 months. We haven't observed any recurrence of symmastia to date in this study. One postoperative hematoma and one seroma occurred. All ten patients achieved acceptable results through the procedure. Conclusion: Our pericapsular Tuohy technique for medial closure of the pocket is a practical and efficient substitute to traditional capsulorraphy and provides reliable and reproducible results.
