Capillary-Gravity Waves Generated by a Sudden Object Motion
We study theoretically the capillary-gravity waves created at the water-air
interface by a small object during a sudden accelerated or decelerated
rectilinear motion. We analyze the wave resistance corresponding to the
transient wave pattern and show that it is nonzero even if the involved
velocity (the final one in the accelerated case, the initial one in the
decelerated case) is smaller than the minimum phase velocity . These results might be important for a better
understanding of the propulsion of water-walking insects where accelerated and
decelerated motions frequently occur.Comment: Submitted to Physics of Fluid
Interplay of internal stresses, electric stresses and surface diffusion in polymer films
We investigate two destabilization mechanisms for elastic polymer films and
put them into a general framework: first, instabilities due to in-plane stress
and second due to an externally applied electric field normal to the film's
free surface. As shown recently, polymer films are often stressed due to
out-of-equilibrium fabrication processes as e.g. spin coating. Via an
Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld mechanism as known from solids, the system can decrease
its energy by undulating its surface by surface diffusion of polymers and
thereby relaxing stresses. On the other hand, application of an electric field
is widely used experimentally to structure thin films: when the electric
Maxwell surface stress overcomes surface tension and elastic restoring forces,
the system undulates with a wavelength determined by the film thickness. We
develop a theory taking into account both mechanisms simultaneously and discuss
their interplay and the effects of the boundary conditions both at the
substrate and the free surface.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
The first part of this thesis is focused on instabilities in thin polymer films. When an electric field is applied perpendicular to the film surface, and the temperature is above the glass transition temperature, the film becomes unstable against surface modulations. In particular, we study the influence of residual stresses on the growth rate and on the selected wavenumber of this instability. We start by describing the fabrication process of thin films (typically spin-coating) and we explain why residual stresses may appear and should be considered. Then a model is developed and every hypothesis is discussed in detail. Three rheological constitutive laws are investigated : a non-linear elastic Neo-Hookean solid, a viscoelastic Voigt-Kelvin solid and a viscoelastic Maxwell fluid. In the second part, we study the counterion density around a hydrophobic polyelectrolyte. In a bad solvent, this kind of polyelectrolyte adopts a pearl-necklace structure. The counterion density is determined around one of the 'pearls' in this structure. Applying the quasi-localized charge approximation allows us to get scaling laws between the coupling parameter on the one hand and the decay length and the uptake charge on the other hand. The scaling laws were confirmed by numerical simulations. Finally we applied Density Functional Theory to this system, also being in good agreement with the two other methods. Keywords : thin films, instabilities, non-linear elasticity, viscoelasticity, polyelectrolyte, strong coupling.

Transport properties of overheated electrons trapped on a helium surface
An ultra-strong photovoltaic effect has recently been reported for electrons trapped on a liquid helium surface under a microwave excitation tuned at intersubband resonance [D. Konstantinov, A.D. Chepelianskii, K. Kono, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn 81, 093601 (2012)]. In this article, we analyze theoretically the redistribution of the electron density induced by an overheating of the surface electrons under irradiation, and obtain quantitative predictions for the photocurrent dependence on the effective electron temperature and confinement voltages. We show that the photo-current can change sign as a function of the parameters of the electrostatic confinement potential on the surface, while the photocurrent measurements reported so far have been performed only at a fixed confinement potential. The experimental observation of this sign reversal could provide a reliable estimation of the electron effective temperature in this new out of equilibrium state. Finally, we have also considered the effect of the temperature on the outcome of capacitive transport measurement techniques. These investigations led us to develop, numerical and analytical methods for solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation in the limit of very low temperatures which could be useful for other systems
