How Gender Differences Affect Mental Health Outcomes
This literature review will examine how mental health can be influenced by differences in gender, while being viewed through a sociological lens. The paper is organized by the themes of gendered mental illness, consequences, and recovery
Policies to Encourage Biking and Walking in Buffalo
Despite having a climate that can make Siberia look attractive at time, Buffalo has a surprisingly large number of citizens who ride a bicycle or walk to work. But the City and Erie County have not done much to meet this high demand. Though there are a few streets within the City that do have marked bike lanes the vast majority do not. A similar problem exists in the suburbs; suburban roads frequently lack sidewalks, let alone bike lanes, though bicyclists can (and do) ride on the shoulder of the road. There are also a few signed bike routes (Sweet Home Road in Amherst being one of the better examples) and a nascent system of off-road bike trails (for example, the Ellicott Creek Trail, which runs through SUNY Buffalo\u27s North Campus.
Supermodel Analysis of the Hard X-Ray Excess in the Coma Cluster
The Supermodel provides an accurate description of the thermal contribution
by the hot intracluster plasma which is crucial for the analysis of the hard
excess. In this paper the thermal emissivity in the Coma cluster is derived
starting from the intracluster gas temperature and density profiles obtained by
the Supermodel analysis of X-ray observables: the XMM-Newton temperature
profile and the Rosat brightness distribution. The Supermodel analysis of the
BeppoSAX/PDS hard X-ray spectrum confirms our previous results, namely an
excess at the c.l. of ~4.8sigma and a nonthermal flux of 1.30+-0.40x 10^-11 erg
cm^-2 s^-1 in the energy range 20-80 keV. A recent joint XMM-Newton/Suzaku
analysis reports an upper limit of ~6x10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the energy range
20-80 keV for the nonthermal flux with an average gas temperature of 8.45+-0.06
keV, and an excess of nonthermal radiation at a confidence level above 4sigma,
without including systematic effects, for an average XMM-Newton temperature of
8.2 keV in the Suzaku/HXD-PIN FOV, in agreement with our earlier PDS analysis.
Here we present a further evidence of the compatibility between the Suzaku and
BeppoSAX spectra, obtained by our Supermodel analysis of the PDS data, when the
smaller size of the HXD-PIN FOV and the two different average temperatures
derived by XMM-Newton and by the joint XMM-Newton/Suzaku analysis are taken
into account. The consistency of the PDS and HXD-PIN spectra reaffirms the
presence of a nonthermal component in the hard X-ray spectrum of the Coma
cluster. The Supermodel analysis of the PDS data reports an excess at c.l.
above 4sigma also for the higher average temperature of 8.45 keV thanks to the
PDS FOV considerably greater than the HXD-PIN FOV.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Security warning system monitors up to fifteen remote areas simultaneously
Security warning system consisting of 15 television cameras is capable of monitoring several remote or unoccupied areas simultaneously. The system uses a commutator and decommutator, allowing time-multiplexed video transmission. This security system could be used in industrial and retail establishments
The relationship between income and housing deprivation in Luxembourg: a longitudinal analysis
The relationship between income and housing deprivation in Luxembourg is analysed at both a cross-sectional and longitudinal level using data from the Panel Socio-Economique ?Liewen zu Lëtzebuerg? (PSELL3) for 2003 to 2009. Long-term housing deprivation is negatively associated with long-term income but this relationship is not confirmed when controlling for unobserved heterogeneity through fixed effect models. This finding suggests that housing deprivation is less affected by short variations in income than by measures of permanent income and that unobserved characteristics of households, such as their wealth or assets, may affect the relationship between long-term income and long-term deprivation.income; housing deprivation; Luxembourg; panel data
The crystallization of asymmetric patchy models for globular proteins in solution
Asymmetric patchy particle models have recently been shown to describe the
crystallization of small globular proteins with near quantitative accuracy.
Here, we investigate how asymmetry in patch geometry and bond energy generally
impact the phase diagram and nucleation dynamics of this family of soft matter
models. We find the role of the geometry asymmetry to be weak, but the energy
asymmetry to markedly interfere with the crystallization thermodynamics and
kinetics. These results provide a rationale for the success and occasional
failure of George and Wilson's proposal for protein crystallization conditions
as well as physical guidance for developing more effective protein
crystallization strategies.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
