    The effects of background music and sound in economic decision making: Evidence from a laboratory experiment

    This paper experimentally studies the effects of background music and sound on the preference of the decision makers for rewards in pairwise intertemporal choice tasks and lottery choice tasks. The participants took part in the current experiment, involving four treatments: (1) the familiar music treatment; (2) the unfamiliar music treatment; (3) the noise treatment and (4) the no music treatment. The experimental results confirm that background noise affects human performance in decision making under risk and intertemporal decision making, though the results do not indicate the significant familiarity effect that is a change of the preference in the presence of familiar background music and sound.Allais-type preferences; choice under risk; intertemporal choice; the familiarity effect

    Generation of four induced pluripotent stem cell lines (FHUi003-A, FHUi003-B, FHUi004-A and FHUi004-B) from two affected individuals of a familial neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus family

    Four disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines were respectively derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of two affected individuals in a family affected by familial neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus carrying the c.314G>C mutation. The expression of pluripotency markers (NANOG, OCT4, and SOX2), maintenance of a normal karyotype, absence of episomal vectors used for iPSC generation, and presence of the original pathogenic mutation were confirmed for each iPSC line. The ability to differentiate into three germ layers was confirmed by a teratoma formation assay. These iPSC lines can help in disease recapitulation in vitro using organoids and elucidation of disease mechanisms

    In order highlight the non-steady state and real world dynamics associated with competitive innovation we develop a model involving choice of product quality in a simple duopoly characterised by two key departures from the dominant framework of quality ladder: first, we consider firms who refrain from maximising short-run profits. Instead, firms are started their function or action by their long-run goal of survival and growth. Secondly, we introduce the full-cost pricing model as opposed to market clearing prices. Based on these two key features we are able to derive the dynamics that can characterise the evolution of product quality in the non-steady state. We establish that the presence of an unstable equilibrium creates a threshold effect, which can also give rise to either a virtuous or vicious, path of quality choices. We further show that the quality dynamics can exhibit chaotic behaviour. As a consequence, firms become unsuccessful to see systematic errors. Firms also become unsuccessful to make long-run predictions with certainty even though they act in a deterministic world. The corollary is that time profiles will separate exponentially and these time profiles begin very close together. We offer interesting simulations to support the theoretical findings

    TrafficCam: Sharing traffic information based on dynamic IPv6 multicast group assignment using smartphone sensors

    CCNC 2013: 10th IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference, Jan 11-14, 2013, Las Vegas, NV, USAExchanging traffic information among nearby vehicles is one of the communication scenarios in the field of intelligent transport systems (ITS). An important question in this scenario is ”How can traffic information be delivered to only one subset of nearby vehicles in the same road traffic situation?", for example, to only congested traffic in a certain lane. In this demonstration, we propose a dynamic IPv6 multicast group assignment mechanism using GPS, an accelerometer and a magnetometer embedded in smartphones. Our mechanism enables each vehicle to find the relevant vehicles, and to compose a temporary IPv6 multicast address. Our mechanism can deliver traffic information to a group of vehicles in a particular situation. This demonstration, carried out on virtual traffic congestion, shows an information-sharing scenario using a prototype of the proposed mechanism, implemented as an Android application called TrafficCam. Our application demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed mechanism
