    Gravitational Waves from Wobbling Pulsars

    The prospects for detection of gravitational waves from precessing pulsars have been considered by constructing fully relativistic rotating neutron star models and evaluating the expected wave amplitude hh from a galactic source. For a "typical" neutron matter equation of state and observed rotation rates, it is shown that moderate wobble angles may render an observable signal from a nearby source once the present generation of interferometric antennas becomes operative.Comment: PlainTex, 7 pp. , no figures, IAG/USP Rep. 6

    The ρ\rho parameter at three loops and elliptic integrals

    We describe the analytic calculation of the master integrals required to compute the two-mass three-loop corrections to the ρ\rho parameter. In particular, we present the calculation of the master integrals for which the corresponding differential equations do not factorize to first order. The homogeneous solutions to these differential equations are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions at rational argument.     Iterated Elliptic and Hypergeometric Integrals for Feynman Diagrams

    We calculate 3-loop master integrals for heavy quark correlators and the 3-loop QCD corrections to the ρ\rho-parameter. They obey non-factorizing differential equations of second order with more than three singularities, which cannot be factorized in Mellin-NN space either. The solution of the homogeneous equations is possible in terms of convergent close integer power series as 2F1_2F_1 Gau\ss{} hypergeometric functions at rational argument. In some cases, integrals of this type can be mapped to complete elliptic integrals at rational argument. This class of functions appears to be the next one arising in the calculation of more complicated Feynman integrals following the harmonic polylogarithms, generalized polylogarithms, cyclotomic harmonic polylogarithms, square-root valued iterated integrals, and combinations thereof, which appear in simpler cases. The inhomogeneous solution of the corresponding differential equations can be given in terms of iterative integrals, where the new innermost letter itself is not an iterative integral. A new class of iterative integrals is introduced containing letters in which (multiple) definite integrals appear as factors. For the elliptic case, we also derive the solution in terms of integrals over modular functions and also modular forms, using qq-product and series representations implied by Jacobi's ϑi\vartheta_i functions and Dedekind's η\eta-function. The corresponding representations can be traced back to polynomials out of Lambert--Eisenstein series, having representations also as elliptic polylogarithms, a qq-factorial 1/ηk(τ)1/\eta^k(\tau), logarithms and polylogarithms of qq and their qq-integrals. Due to the specific form of the physical variable x(q)x(q) for different processes, different representations do usually appear.     Contributions to heavy flavour transition matrix elements in the variable flavour number scheme are considered at 3-loop order. In particular a calculation of the diagrams with two equal masses that contribute to the massive operator matrix element Agg,Q(3)A_{gg,Q}^{(3)} is performed. In the Mellin space result one finds finite nested binomial sums.     Visser's Massive Gravity Bimetric Theory Revisited

    A massive gravity theory was proposed by Visser in the late nineties. This theory, based on a backgroung metric bαβb_{\alpha \beta} and on an usual dynamical metric gαβg_{\alpha \beta} has the advantage of being free of ghosts as well as discontinuities present in other massive theories proposed in the past. In the present investigation, the equations of Visser's theory are revisited with a particular care on the related conservation laws.\ It will be shown that a multiplicative factor is missing in the graviton tensor originally derived by Visser, which has no incidence on the weak field approach but becomes important in the strong field regime when, for instance, cosmological applications are considered. In this case, contrary to some previous claims found in the literature, we conclude that a non-static background metric is required in order to obtain a solution able to mimic the Λ\LambdaCDM cosmology.Comment: 10 pages - Accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Brazilian community development banks (CDBs) have established various coordinated financial mechanisms aiming to restructure poor and peripheral local economies. Their development strategy includes an instrument to facilitate access to microfinance and a community currency, combined with the definition of vocational training programmes and support for business start- ups. Put together, these different activities constitute the endogenous and resilient territorial development strategy defined by CDBs. Little scientific literature has been devoted to the study of community currencies in this process. This article presents an overview of the symbolic meanings conveyed by the currency of Banco Palmas, the first and most prominent CDB. First, we present some historical and territorial characteristics of Banco Palmas. Second, we analyse the symbolic role of its currency: money as a bond/link (the building of the community on its territory); money as a medium for institutionalisation (of the community itself and to the exogenous actors, as to define a federative project); and finally money as a vector-catalyst (when the plasticity of money allows to explore its different formats and so, to adapt it to the new perspectives of community and territorial development)
