Diversity, Dilemmas and Transformation in Post-Compulsory Education: an Introduction to the Special Issue on Work Based Research

    Get PDF
As governments recognize the central place of post-compulsory education in regenerating and modernizing the economic and social fabric of society (BIS 2008), it is appropriate for us as educational researchers to question whether this recognition beckons a different role for research in post-compulsory education. Much of this research is work based, using a broad interpretation of this term, and the majority of articles received by this journal (though the proportion published is a lower one) reflect this balance. Work based research in education poses particular challenges for the researcher and the practitioner, whether the focus is practitioner research, in which case the dilemmas can centre on potential role conflict between practitioner and researcher roles, or whether the work based research is observational – analyzing others’ professional practice, in which case the dilemmas can centre on power relations between researcher and researched, the politics of research, and ethical questions around care for participants and the degree of their involvement or non-involvement in the total research enterprise. This article reviews the prospects for work based research in post-compulsory education and introduces the articles in this special issue

Pulsar J1411+2551: A Low Mass New Double Neutron Star System

In this work, we report the discovery and characterization of PSR J1411+2551, a new binary pulsar discovered in the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift Pulsar Survey. Our timing observations of the radio pulsar in the system span a period of about 2.5 years. This timing campaign allowed a precise measurement of its spin period (62.4 ms) and its derivative (9.6 ±\pm 0.7) ×1020ss1\times 10^{-20}\, \rm s\, s^{-1}; from these, we derive a characteristic age of 10\sim 10\,Gyr and a surface magnetic field strength of 2.5 ×109\times 10^{9} G. These numbers indicate that this pulsar was mildly recycled by accretion of matter from the progenitor of the companion star. The system has an eccentric (e=0.17e\, = \, 0.17) 2.61 day orbit. This eccentricity allows a highly significant measurement of the rate of advance of periastron, ω˙=0.07686±0.00046 yr1\dot{\omega} = 0.07686 \pm 0.00046 ^{\circ}~{\rm yr}^{-1}. Assuming general relativity accurately models the orbital motion, this implies a total system mass M = 2.538±0.022M2.538 \pm 0.022 M_{\odot}. The minimum companion mass is 0.92M0.92\, M_{\odot} and the maximum pulsar mass is 1.62M1.62\, M_{\odot}. The large companion mass and the orbital eccentricity suggest that PSR J1411+2551 is a double neutron star system; the lightest known to date including the DNS merger GW 170817. Furthermore, the relatively low orbital eccentricity and small proper motion limits suggest that the second supernova had a relatively small associated kick; this and the low system mass suggest that it was an ultra-stripped supernova.Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ letter

Universal patterns in sound amplitudes of songs and music genres

We report a statistical analysis over more than eight thousand songs. Specifically, we investigate the probability distribution of the normalized sound amplitudes. Our findings seems to suggest a universal form of distribution which presents a good agreement with a one-parameter stretched Gaussian. We also argue that this parameter can give information on music complexity, and consequently it goes towards classifying songs as well as music genres. Additionally, we present statistical evidences that correlation aspects of the songs are directly related with the non-Gaussian nature of their sound amplitude distributions.Comment: Accepted for publication as a Brief Report in Physical Review

Collapse of ρxx\rho_{xx} ringlike structures in 2DEGs under tilted magnetic fields

In the quantum Hall regime, the longitudinal resistivity ρxx\rho_{xx} plotted as a density--magnetic-field (n2DBn_{2D}-B) diagram displays ringlike structures due to the crossings of two sets of spin split Landau levels from different subbands [e.g., Zhang \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{95}, 216801 (2005)]. For tilted magnetic fields, some of these ringlike structures "shrink" as the tilt angle is increased and fully collapse at θc6\theta_c \approx 6^\circ. Here we theoretically investigate the topology of these structures via a non-interacting model for the 2DEG. We account for the inter Landau-level coupling induced by the tilted magnetic field via perturbation theory. This coupling results in anti-crossings of Landau levels with parallel spins. With the new energy spectrum, we calculate the corresponding n2DBn_{2D}-B diagram of the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level. We argue that the DOS displays the same topology as ρxx\rho_{xx} in the n2DBn_{2D}-B diagram. For the ring with filling factor ν=4\nu=4, we find that the anti-crossings make it shrink for increasing tilt angles and collapse at a large enough angle. Using effective parameters to fit the θ=0\theta = 0^\circ data, we find a collapsing angle θc3.6\theta_c \approx 3.6^\circ. Despite this factor-of-two discrepancy with the experimental data, our model captures the essential mechanism underlying the ring collapse.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures; Proceedings of the PASPS V Conference Held in August 2008 in Foz do Igua\c{c}u, Brazi

    The Strange Prospects for Astrophysics

The implications of the formation of strange quark matter in neutron stars and in core-collapse supernovae is discussed with special emphasis on the possibility of having a strong first order QCD phase transition at high baryon densities. If strange quark matter is formed in core-collapse supernovae shortly after the bounce, it causes the launch of a second outgoing shock which is energetic enough to lead to a explosion. A signal for the formation of strange quark matter can be read off from the neutrino spectrum, as a second peak in antineutrinos is released when the second shock runs over the neutrinosphere.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, invited talk given at the international conference on strangeness in quark matter (SQM2008), Beijing, October 6-10, Beijing, China, version to appear in J. Phys.
