    Effects of gibberellic acid as a gametocide on different genotypes of German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita [L.] Rauschert)

    The objective of the present research was to determine statistically before made observations on reactions of Chamomile after treatment with gibberellic acid undertaken to find a feasible way of chemical castration to create maternal lines as a base for hybrid progeny. Chamomile plants of three cultivars were set up in a split plot design, with treated and untreated parts. Four traits: ‘percentage affected capitula’, ‘seeds per capitulum’, ‘percentage of germination’ and ‘percentage infertile pollen’ were valuated, twice per plant. Analyses showed a significant effect of treatment on pollen viability and a strong tendency on the visible affection of capitula, but no influence on number of seeds or germination rate. Neither did cultivars show any infl uence, nor did an interaction between cultivar and treatment appear. According to the aim to fi nd a suitable method to generate male sterile maternal lines, the reactions, affecting male, but not female fertility, seem to be highly appreciated, but the repeated spray application in a necessarily sensible stage of fl ower development and a reduction of pollen viability of only about 10% constrain the practicability

    Quasiparticle spectra in the vicinity of a d-wave vortex

    We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope, as a function of distance r and angle \theta from the vortex core in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis. We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy around the vortex core and establish a connection to the structure of the tunneling matrix element.Comment: 9 pages REVTeX + 5 PostScript figures.     Theory of vortex lattice effects on STM spectra in d-wave superconductors

    Theory of scanning tunneling spectroscopy of low energy quasiparticle (QP) states in vortex lattices of d-wave superconductors is developed taking account of the effects caused by an extremely large extension of QP wavefunctions in the nodal directions and the band structure in the QP spectrum. The oscillatory structures in STM spectra, which correspond to van Hove singularities are analysed.     Herb yield and essential oil of dill (Anethum graveolens L.) at different locations

    A study on the effect of growing site on the growth of the dill herb at three locations (Helsinki, Sahalahti, Inari) in Finland and at Freising, West Germany, was carried out in 1985. The growing medium was fertilized peat of the same quality at each location. Dill (’Dura’) was sown twice, in early spring and 2—3 weeks later at all growing sites. The herb crop was harvested just when the first flower buds had developed. The later sowings gave significantly larger yields than the earlier ones. The herb yields were largest at the most southern location. The fresh yield was the larger the more rain there was, and the warmer the growing season was. The significantly highest oil contents were recorded in the herb of the later sowings at Freising and Sahalahti. Otherwise, no differences in the oil content were recorded. The correlation between the oil content and degree days was positive. The total amount of components responsible for the aroma varied between 4.5 and 7.9 mg/g dry weight. The amount of essential oil and that of a typical aroma compound in dill, 3.6-dimethyl-2,3,3a,4,5,7a-hexahydrobenzofuran, were not significantly affected by the location

    Mixed-state quasiparticle transport in high-T_c cuprates: localization by magnetic field

    Theory of quasiparticle transport in the mixed state of a d-wave superconductor is developed under the assumption of disordered vortex array. A novel universal regime is identified at fields above H*= c*H_{c2}(T/T_c)^2, characterized by a field-independent longitudinal thermal conductivity.     The RNA interference pathway affects midgut infection- and escape barriers for Sindbis virus in Aedes aegypti

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The RNA interference (RNAi) pathway acts as an innate antiviral immune response in <it>Aedes aegypti</it>, modulating arbovirus infection of mosquitoes. Sindbis virus (SINV; family: <it>Togaviridae</it>, genus: <it>Alphavirus</it>) is an arbovirus that infects <it>Ae. aegypti </it>in the laboratory. SINV strain TR339 encounters a midgut escape barrier (MEB) during infection of <it>Ae. aegypti</it>. The nature of this barrier is not well understood. To investigate the role of the midgut as the central organ determining vector competence for arboviruses, we generated transgenic mosquitoes in which the RNAi pathway was impaired in midgut tissue of bloodfed females. We used these mosquitoes to reveal effects of RNAi impairment in the midgut on SINV replication, midgut infection and dissemination efficiencies, and mosquito longevity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As a novel tool for studying arbovirus-mosquito interactions, we engineered a transgenic mosquito line with an impaired RNAi pathway in the midgut of bloodfed females by silencing expression of the <it>Aa</it>-<it>dcr2 </it>gene. In midgut tissue of the transgenic Carb/dcr16 line, <it>Aa</it>-<it>dcr2 </it>expression was reduced ~50% between 1-7 days post-bloodmeal (pbm) when compared to the recipient mosquito strain. After infection with SINV-TR339EGFP, <it>Aa</it>-<it>dcr2 </it>expression levels were enhanced in both mosquito strains. In the RNAi pathway impaired mosquito strain SINV titers and midgut infection rates were significantly higher at 7 days pbm. There was also a strong tendency for increased virus dissemination rates among the transgenic mosquitoes. Between 7-14 days pbm, SINV was diminished in midgut tissue of the transgenic mosquitoes. Transgenic impairment of the RNAi pathway and/or SINV infection did not affect longevity of the mosquitoes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We showed that RNAi impaired transgenic mosquitoes are a useful tool for studying arbovirus-mosquito interactions at the molecular level. Following ingestion by <it>Ae. aegypti</it>, the recombinant SINV-TR339EGFP was confronted with both MEB and a midgut infection barrier (MIB). Impairment of the RNAi pathway in the midgut strongly reduced both midgut barriers for the virus. This confirms that the endogenous RNAi pathway of <it>Ae. aegypti </it>modulates vector competence for SINV in the midgut. The RNAi pathway acts as a gatekeeper to the incoming virus by affecting infection rate of the midgut, intensity of infection, and dissemination from the midgut to secondary tissues.</p

    Detection of vortex tubes in solar granulation from observations with Sunrise

    We have investigated a time series of continuum intensity maps and corresponding Dopplergrams of granulation in a very quiet solar region at the disk center, recorded with the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment (IMaX) on board the balloon-borne solar observatory Sunrise. We find that granules frequently show substructure in the form of lanes composed of a leading bright rim and a trailing dark edge, which move together from the boundary of a granule into the granule itself. We find strikingly similar events in synthesized intensity maps from an ab initio numerical simulation of solar surface convection. From cross sections through the computational domain of the simulation, we conclude that these `granular lanes' are the visible signature of (horizontally oriented) vortex tubes. The characteristic optical appearance of vortex tubes at the solar surface is explained. We propose that the observed vortex tubes may represent only the large-scale end of a hierarchy of vortex tubes existing near the solar surface.Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters: Sunrise Special Issue, reveived 2010 June 16; accepted 2010 August

    Absence of the zero bias peak in vortex tunneling spectra of high temperature superconductors?

    The c-axis tunneling matrix of high-Tc superconductors is shown to depend strongly on the in-plane momentum of electrons and vanish along the four nodal lines of the d(x^2-y^2)-wave energy gap. This anisotropic tunneling matrix suppresses completely the contribution of the most extended quasiparticles in the vortex core to the c-axis tunneling current and leads to a spectrum similar to that of a nodeless superconductor. Our results give a natural explanation of the absence of the zero bias peak as well as other features observed in the vortex tunneling spectra of high-Tc cuprates.Comment: 4 pages 3 figures, minor corrections, to appear in Phys Rev

    SO(5) theory of insulating vortex cores in high-TcT_c materials

    We study the fermionic states of the antiferromagnetically ordered vortex cores predicted to exist in the superconducting phase of the newly proposed SO(5) model of strongly correlated electrons. Our model calculation gives a natural explanation of the recent STM measurements on BSCCO, which in surprising contrast to YBCO revealed completely insulating vortex cores.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
