Vegetation Effects on Fish Distribution in Impounded Salt Marshes
We compared the density and biomass of resident fish in vegetated and
unvegetated flooded habitats of impounded salt marshes in the northern Indian
River Lagoon (IRL) Estuary of east-central Florida. A 1-m2 throw trap was used
to sample fish in randomly located, paired sample plots (n = 198 pairs) over 5 seasons
in 7 impoundments. We collected a total of 15 fish taxa, and 88% of the fishes
we identified from the samples belonged to three species: Cyprinodon variegatus
(Sheepshead Minnow), Gambusia holbrooki (Eastern Mosquitofish), and Poecilia
latipinna (Sailfin Molly). Vegetated habitat usually had higher density and biomass
of fish. Mean fish density (and 95% confidence interval) for vegetated and unvegetated
sites were 8.2 (6.7–9.9) and 2.0 (1.6–2.4) individuals m-2, respectively; mean
biomass (and 95% confidence interval) for vegetated and unvegetated sites were
3.0 (2.5–3.7) and 1.1 (0.9–1.4) g m-2, respectively. We confirmed previous findings
that impounded salt marshes of the northern IRL Estuary produce a high standing
stock of resident fishes. Seasonal patterns of abundance were consistent with fish
moving between vegetated and unvegetated habitat as water levels changed in the
estuary. Differences in density, mean size, and species composition of resident
fishes between vegetated and unvegetated habitats have important implications for
movement of biomass and nutrients out of salt marsh by piscivores (e.g., wading
birds and fishes) via a trophic relay
Scale-Dependent Habitat Selection of Nesting Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets
Foraging habitat selection of nesting Great Egrets (
Ardea alba
) and Snowy Egrets (
Egretta thula
) was
investigated within an estuary with extensive impounded salt marsh habitat. Using a geographic information system,
available habitat was partitioned into concentric bands at five, ten, and 15 km radius from nesting colonies to assess
the relative effects of habitat composition and distance on habitat selection. Snowy Egrets were more likely than
Great Egrets to depart colonies and travel to foraging sites in groups, but both species usually arrived at sites that
were occupied by other wading birds. Mean flight distances were 6.2 km (SE = 0.4, N = 28, range 1.8-10.7 km) for
Great Egrets and 4.7 km (SE = 0.48, N = 31, range 0.7-12.5 km) for Snowy Egrets. At the broadest spatial scale both
species used impounded (mostly salt marsh) and estuarine edge habitat more than expected based on availability
while avoiding unimpounded (mostly fresh water wetland) habitat. At more local scales habitat use matched availability.
Interpretation of habitat preference differed with the types of habitat that were included and the maximum
distance that habitat was considered available. These results illustrate that caution is needed when interpreting the
results of habitat preference studies when individuals are constrained in their choice of habitats, such as for central
place foragers

A Monte Carlo simulation study of the impact of novel scintillation crystals on performance characteristics of PET scanners
© 2018 Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica Objective: The purpose of this study is to validate a Monte Carlo simulation model for the clinical Siemens Biograph mCT PET scanner using the GATE simulation toolkit, and to evaluate the performance of six different scintillation materials in this model using the National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA) NU 2-2007 protocol. Methods: A model of the Biograph mCT PET detection system and its geometry was developed. NEMA NU 2-2007 phantoms were also modelled. The accuracy of the developed scanner model was validated through a comparison of the simulation results from GATE, SimSET and PeneloPET toolkits, and experimental data obtained using the NEMA NU 2-2007 protocols. The evaluated performance metrics included count rate performance, spatial resolution, sensitivity, and scatter fraction (SF). Thereafter, the mCT PET scanner was simulated with six different candidate high-performance scintillation materials, including LSO, LaBr3, CeBr3, LuAP, GLuGAG and LFS-3, and its performance evaluated according to the NEMA NU 2-2007 specifications. Results: The Monte Carlo simulation model demonstrates good agreement with the experimental data and results from other simulation packages. For instance, the scatter fraction calculated using GATE simulation is 34.35% while the experimentally measured value is 33.2%, 38.48% for the SimSET, and 34.8% for the PeneloPET toolkit. The best-performing scintillation materials were found to be LuAP, LSO and LFS-3, while GLuGAG offers acceptable performance if cost is the dominant concern. Conclusion: The main performance characteristics of the Biograph mCT PET scanner can be simulated accurately using GATE with a good agreement with other Monte Carlo simulation packages and experimental measurements. Newly developed scintillators show promise and offer alternative options for the design of novel generation PET scanners
Flight evaluation of advanced flight control systems and cockpit displays for powered-lift STOL Aircraft
A flight research program was conducted to assess the improvements, in longitudinal path control during a STOL approach and landing, that can be achieved with manual and automatic control system concepts and cockpit displays with various degrees of complexity. NASA-Ames powered-lift Augmentor Wing Research Aircraft was used in the research program. Satisfactory flying qualities were demonstrated for selected stabilization and command augmentation systems and flight director combinations. The ability of the pilot to perform precise landings at low touchdown sink rates with a gentle flare maneuver was also achieved. The path-control improvement is considered to be applicable to other powered-lift aircraft configurations
Home range and habitat use by Kemp's Ridley turtles in West-Central Florida
The Kemp's ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) is an endangered species whose recovery depends in part on
the identification and protection of required habitats. We used radio and sonic telemetry on subadult Kemp's ridley
turtles to investigate home-range size and habitat use in the coastal waters of west-central Florida from 1994 to
1996. We tracked 9 turtles during May-August up to 70 days after release and fou.ld they occupied 5-30 km2 foraging
ranges. Compositional analyses indicated that turtles used rock outcroppings in their foraging ranges at a
significantly higher proportion than expected. based on availability within the study area. Additionally. turtles used
live bottom (e.g .• sessile invertebrates) and green macroalgae habitats significantly more than seagrass habitat. Similar
studies are needed through'mt the Kemp's ridley turtles' range to investigate regional and stage-specific differences
in habitat use. which can then be used to conserve important foraging areas
Effect of various dopant elements on primary graphite growth
Five spheroidal graphite cast irons were investigated, a usual ferritic grade and four pearlitic alloys containing Cu and doped with Sb, Sn and Ti. These alloys were remelted in a graphite crucible, leading to volatilization of the magnesium added for spheroidization and to carbon saturation of the liquid. The alloys were then cooled down and maintained at a temperature above the eutectic temperature. During this step, primary graphite could develop showing various features depending on the doping elements added. The largest effects were that of Ti which greatly reduces graphite nucleation and growth, and that of Sb which leads to rounded agglomerates instead of lamellar graphite. The samples have been investigated with secondary ion mass spectrometry to enlighten distribution of elements in primary graphite. SIMS analysis showed almost even distribution of elements, including Mg and Al (from the inoculant) in the ferritic grade, while uneven distribution was evident in all doped alloys. Investigations are going on to clarify if the uneven distribution is associated with structural defects in the graphite precipitates
