    Mean Field Theory of Sandpile Avalanches: from the Intermittent to the Continuous Flow Regime

    We model the dynamics of avalanches in granular assemblies in partly filled rotating cylinders using a mean-field approach. We show that, upon varying the cylinder angular velocity ω\omega, the system undergoes a hysteresis cycle between an intermittent and a continuous flow regimes. In the intermittent flow regime, and approaching the transition, the avalanche duration exhibits critical slowing down with a temporal power-law divergence. Upon adding a white noise term, and close to the transition, the distribution of avalanche durations is also a power-law. The hysteresis, as well as the statistics of avalanche durations, are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments in partly filled rotating cylinders.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX 3.0, postscript figures 1, 3 and 4 appended

    Respiratory profile in patients after liver transplantation

    Patients in the immediate post-operative liver transplantation (LxT) period can develop respiratory and functional complications. In the postoperative months, these functions tend to improve. Nevertheless, there are few studies that evaluate precisely and specifically respiratory function in post-LxT long-term after surgery. The objective of the study was to describe the respiratory profile of patients 1 to 6 months after LxT, accompanied by LxT outpatients. Methods. We included patients between 25 and 60 years old. We excluded patients with chronic renal or cerebrovascular impairment, severe heart disease, and history of lung surgery or liver re-transplantation. Evaluations were carried out on 3 occasions: 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after LxT. The following evaluations were submitted: respiratory muscle strength (manuvacuometer), value flows and lung volumes (spirometer), and surface electromyography analyzing root mean square in the right (RMS-R) and left (RMS-L) diaphragm. We analyzed MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease). After normality tests, we used the Friedman test (non-parametric values) and ANOVA (parametric values), P >= .5 with the use of SPSS 21.0. Results. Patients (n = 15) had a mean age of 53.0 +/- 7.5 years and 25.9 +/- 4.6 MELD score. The statistically significant value obtained at the 3 occasions of evaluation was RMS-R, with a decline during periods of evaluation. This can be caused by removal of the liver, resulting in a denervation and reduction in compliance of this portion of the muscle. Conclusions. Patients between 1 and 6 months after transplantation have a specific respiratory profile, close to normal values.     Comparison of ethanol production from corn cobs and switchgrass following a pyrolysis-based biorefinery approach

    Background One of the main obstacles in lignocellulosic ethanol production is the necessity of pretreatment and fractionation of the biomass feedstocks to produce sufficiently pure fermentable carbohydrates. In addition, the by-products (hemicellulose and lignin fraction) are of low value, when compared to dried distillers grains (DDG), the main by-product of corn ethanol. Fast pyrolysis is an alternative thermal conversion technology for processing biomass. It has recently been optimized to produce a stream rich in levoglucosan, a fermentable glucose precursor for biofuel production. Additional product streams might be of value to the petrochemical industry. However, biomass heterogeneity is known to impact the composition of pyrolytic product streams, as a complex mixture of aromatic compounds is recovered with the sugars, interfering with subsequent fermentation. The present study investigates the feasibility of fast pyrolysis to produce fermentable pyrolytic glucose from two abundant lignocellulosic biomass sources in Ontario, switchgrass (potential energy crop) and corn cobs (by-product of corn industry). Results Demineralization of biomass removes catalytic centers and increases the levoglucosan yield during pyrolysis. The ash content of biomass was significantly decreased by 82–90% in corn cobs when demineralized with acetic or nitric acid, respectively. In switchgrass, a reduction of only 50% for both acids could be achieved. Conversely, levoglucosan production increased 9- and 14-fold in corn cobs when rinsed with acetic and nitric acid, respectively, and increased 11-fold in switchgrass regardless of the acid used. After pyrolysis, different configurations for upgrading the pyrolytic sugars were assessed and the presence of potentially inhibitory compounds was approximated at each step as double integral of the UV spectrum signal of an HPLC assay. The results showed that water extraction followed by acid hydrolysis and solvent extraction was the best upgrading strategy. Ethanol yields achieved based on initial cellulose fraction were 27.8% in switchgrass and 27.0% in corn cobs. Conclusions This study demonstrates that ethanol production from switchgrass and corn cobs is possible following a combined thermochemical and fermentative biorefinery approach, with ethanol yields comparable to results in conventional pretreatments and fermentation processes.     Holographic conductivity of zero temperature superconductors

    Using the recently found by G. Horowitz and M. Roberts (arXiv:0908.3677) numerical model of the ground state of holographic superconductors (at zero temperature), we calculate the conductivity for such models. The universal relation connecting conductivity with the reflection coefficient was used for finding the conductivity by the WKB approach. The dependence of the conductivity on the frequency and charge density is discussed. Numerical calculations confirm the general arguments of (arXiv:0908.3677) in favor of non-zero conductivity even at zero temperature. In addition to the Horowitz-Roberts solution we have found (probably infinite) set of extra solutions which are normalizable and reach the same correct RN-AdS asymptotic at spatial infinity. These extra solutions (which correspond to larger values of the grand canonical potential) lead to effective potentials that also vanish at the horizon and thus correspond to a non-zero conductivity at zero temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting vortices interacting with strong columnar pinning defects as an external field H(t)H(t) is quasi-statically swept from zero through a matching field BϕB_{\phi}. We analyze several measurable quantities, including the local flux density B(x,y,H(t)) B(x,y,H(t)), magnetization M(H(t))M(H(t)), critical current Jc(B(t))J_{c}(B(t)), and the individual vortex flow paths. We find a significant change in the behavior of these quantities as the local flux density crosses BϕB_{\phi}, and quantify it for many microscopic pinning parameters. Further, we find that for a given pin density Jc(B)J_c(B) can be enhanced by maximizing the distance between the pins for B<Bϕ B < B_{\phi} .Comment: 4 pages, 4 PostScript Figure

    The holographic superconductors in higher-dimensional AdS soliton

    We explore the behaviors of the holographic superconductors at zero temperature for a charged scalar field coupled to a Maxwell field in higher-dimensional AdS soliton spacetime via analytical way. In the probe limit, we obtain the critical chemical potentials increase linearly as a total dimension dd grows up. We find that the critical exponent for condensation operator is obtained as 1/2 independently of dd, and the charge density is linearly related to the chemical potential near the critical point. Furthermore, we consider a slightly generalized setup the Einstein-Power-Maxwell field theory, and find that the critical exponent for condensation operator is given as 1/(42n)1/(4-2n) in terms of a power parameter nn of the Power-Maxwell field, and the charge density is proportional to the chemical potential to the power of 1/(2n)1/(2-n).Comment: LaTeX, 16 pages, 5 figures, typos corrected, one reference added, version to appear in European Physical Journal

    On the trace identity in a model with broken symmetry

    Considering the simple chiral fermion meson model when the chiral symmetry is explicitly broken, we show the validity of a trace identity -- to all orders of perturbation theory -- playing the role of a Callan-Symanzik equation and which allows us to identify directly the breaking of dilatations with the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. More precisely, by coupling the quantum field theory considered to a classical curved space background, represented by the non-propagating external vielbein field, we can express the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor through the Ward identity which characterizes the invariance of the theory under the diffeomorphisms. Our ``Callan-Symanzik equation'' then is the anomalous Ward identity for the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, the so-called ``trace identity''.Comment: 11 pages, Revtex file, final version to appear in Phys.Rev.
