Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in transport through single molecule transistors
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is shown to result in a canting of
spins in a single molecule transistor. We predict non-linear transport
signatures of this effect induced by spin-orbit coupling for the generic case
of a molecular dimer. The conductance is calculated using a master equation and
is found to exhibit a non-trivial dependence on the magnitude and direction of
an external magnetic field. We show how three-terminal transport measurements
allow for a determination of the coupling-vector characterizing the
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In particular, we show how its orientation,
defining the intramolecular spin chirality, can be probed with ferromagnetic
electrodes
The CUORE Cryostat: A 1-Ton Scale Setup for Bolometric Detectors
The cryogenic underground observatory for rare events (CUORE) is a 1-ton
scale bolometric experiment whose detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2
crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. This will be
the largest bolometric mass ever operated. The experiment will work at a
temperature around or below 10 mK. CUORE cryostat consists of a cryogen-free
system based on pulse tubes and a custom high power dilution refrigerator,
designed to match these specifications. The cryostat has been commissioned in
2014 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories and reached a record temperature
of 6 mK on a cubic meter scale. In this paper, we present results of CUORE
commissioning runs. Details on the thermal characteristics and cryogenic

Role of paan chewing and dietary habits in cervical carcinoma in Chennai, India
/=5 paan day(-1)=4.0; 95% CI 1.2-13.3). Among dietary habits, the highest vs lowest intake tertile for vegetables and fruit was associated with an OR of 0.5 (95% CI 0.2-1.0). Low education level and low body weight were also risk factors for ICC, but they did not account for the associations of paan chewing and low vegetable and fruit intake. In the analyses restricted to HPV-positive cases and controls, the inverse association with vegetable and fruit intake was confirmed. Dementia, infections and vaccines: 30 years of controversy
This paper reports the proceedings of a virtual meeting convened by the European Interdisciplinary Council on Ageing (EICA), to discuss the involvement of infectious disorders in the pathogenesis of dementia and neurological disorders leading to dementia. We recap how our view of the infectious etiology of dementia has changed over the last 30 years in light of emerging evidence, and we present evidence in support of the implication of infection in dementia, notably Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The bacteria and viruses thought to be responsible for neuroinflammation and neurological damage are reviewed. We then review the genetic basis for neuroinflammation and dementia, highlighting the genes that are currently the focus of investigation as potential targets for therapy. Next, we describe the antimicrobial hypothesis of dementia, notably the intriguing possibility that amyloid beta may itself possess antimicrobial properties. We further describe the clinical relevance of the gut–brain axis in dementia, the mechanisms by which infection can move from the intestine to the brain, and recent findings regarding dysbiosis patterns in patients with AD. We review the involvement of specific pathogens in neurological disorders, i.e. SARS-CoV-2, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), and influenza. Finally, we look at the role of vaccination to prevent dementia. In conclusion, there is a large body of evidence supporting the involvement of various infectious pathogens in the pathogenesis of dementia, but large-scale studies with long-term follow-up are needed to elucidate the role that infection may play, especially before subclinical or clinical disease is present
Coherent Single Charge Transport in Molecular-Scale Silicon Nanowire Transistors
We report low-temperature electrical transport studies of molecule-scale
silicon nanowires. Individual nanowires exhibit well-defined Coulomb blockade
oscillations characteristic of charge addition to a single nanostructure with
length scales up to at least 400 nm. Further studies demonstrate coherent
charge transport through discrete single particle quantum levels extending the
whole device, and show that the ground state spin configuration follows the
Lieb-Mattis theorem. In addition, depletion of the nanowires suggests that
phase coherent single-dot characteristics are accessible in a regime where
