Bit error rate measurement above and below bit rate tracking threshold
Bit error rate is measured by sending a pseudo-random noise (PRN) code test signal simulating digital data through digital equipment to be tested. An incoming signal representing the response of the equipment being tested, together with any added noise, is received and tracked by being compared with a locally generated PRN code. Once the locally generated PRN code matches the incoming signal a tracking lock is obtained. The incoming signal is then integrated and compared bit-by-bit against the locally generated PRN code and differences between bits being compared are counted as bit errors

Transient energy excitation in shortcuts to adiabaticity for the time dependent harmonic oscillator
There is recently a surge of interest to cut down the time it takes to change
the state of a quantum system adiabatically. We study for the time-dependent
harmonic oscillator the transient energy excitation in speed-up processes
designed to reproduce the initial populations at some predetermined final
frequency and time, providing lower bounds and examples. Implications for the
limits imposed to the process times and for the principle of unattainability of
the absolute zero, in a single expansion or in quantum refrigerator cycles, are
drawn.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Hires and beyond
The High-Resolution image construction program (HiRes) used at IPAC is based on the Maximum Correlation Method. After HiRes intensity images are constructed from IRAS data, additional images are needed to aid in scientific interpretation. Some of the images that are available for this purpose show the fitting noise, estimates of the achieved resolution, and detector track maps. Two methods have been developed for creating color maps without discarding any more spatial information than absolutely necessary: the 'cross-band simulation' and 'prior-knowledge' methods. These maps are demonstrated using the survey observations of a 2 x 2 degree field centered on M31. Prior knowledge may also be used to achieve super-resolution and to suppress ringing around bright point sources observed against background emission. Tools to suppress noise spikes and for accelerating convergence are also described
The Lennard-Jones-Devonshire cell model revisited
We reanalyse the cell theory of Lennard-Jones and Devonshire and find that in
addition to the critical point originally reported for the 12-6 potential (and
widely quoted in standard textbooks), the model exhibits a further critical
point. We show that the latter is actually a more appropriate candidate for
liquid-gas criticality than the original critical point.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Mol. Phy
Dynamic Spin-Polarized Resonant Tunneling in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
Precisely engineered tunnel junctions exhibit a long sought effect that
occurs when the energy of the electron is comparable to the potential energy of
the tunneling barrier. The resistance of metal-insulator-metal tunnel junctions
oscillates with an applied voltage when electrons that tunnel directly into the
barrier's conduction band interfere upon reflection at the classical turning
points: the insulator-metal interface, and the dynamic point where the incident
electron energy equals the potential barrier inside the insulator. A model of
tunneling between free electron bands using the exact solution of the
Schroedinger equation for a trapezoidal tunnel barrier qualitatively agrees
with experiment.Comment: 4pgs, 3 fig
Variability Flagging in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release Source Catalog contains over 257 million objects. We describe the method used to flag variable source candidates in the Catalog. Using a method based on the chi-square of single-exposure flux measurements, we generated a variability flag for each object, and have identified almost 460,000 candidate sources that exhibit significant flux variability with greater than ~7σ confidence. We discuss the flagging method in detail and describe its benefits and limitations. We also present results from the flagging method, including example light curves of several types of variable sources including Algol-type eclipsing binaries, RR Lyr, W UMa, and a blazar candidate
Mononuclear-cell infiltration in ovarian cancer. I. Inflammatory-cell infiltrates from tumour and ascites material.
Malignant effusions and tumour tissue obtained at surgery provided material for a study of the prognostic value of the various inflammatory cells in the prognosis of human ovarian cancer. Ascitic fluids predominantly contained inflammatory cells; tumour cells, both singly and in clusters, were a minor component. Tumour cells were usually in excess in dispersed solid material. Some patients had significant proportions of lymphocytes and macrophages in their solid tumour, and these patients invariably responded to therapy. Sedimentation-velocity separation at unit gravity provided tow populations of inflammatory cells. One consisted of mononuclear cells similar in size to those in the patients blood: the other consisted of one or more large macrophage populations, distinct in morphology and enzymatic markers from both blood monocytes and each other. T lymphocytes were enriched in ascites fractions (78%) and in the tumour-derived mononuclear fraction (71%) compared to patient blood (60%). The T-cell subset characterized by ANAE reactivity was markedly depleted in the tumour-infiltrating fraction (17%) compared to patient blood (62%) or patient blood (51%). Esterase-positive monocyte-like cells were more frequent in the tumour-infiltrating fraction (17%) than ascites (7%) or blood (12%). B lymphocytes were infrequent in solid tumours and difficult to assess in ascites. Histiocyte-like macrophages were present in the higher-velocity tumour-cell containing fractions of both solid and ascitic material. The variation in infiltrating cells between patients and between tumour and ascites of the same individual was marked
