    Electromagnetic interferences from plasmas generated in meteoroids impacts

    Structured Sparse Ternary Compression for Convolutional Layers in Federated Learning

    In Cross-device Federated Learning, communication efficiency is of paramount importance. Sparse Ternary Compression (STC) is one of the most effective techniques for considerably reducing the per-round communication cost of Federated Learning (FL) without significantly degrading the accuracy of the global model, by using ternary quantization in series to topk sparsification. In this paper, we propose an original variant of STC that is specifically designed and implemented for convolutional layers. Our variant is originally based on the experimental evidence that a pattern exists in the distribution of client updates, namely, the difference between the received global model and the locally trained model. In particular, we have experimentally found that the largest (in absolute value) updates for convolutional layers tend to form clusters in a kernel-wise fashion. Therefore, our primary novel idea is to a-priori restrict the elements of STC updates to lay on such a structured pattern, thus allowing us to further reduce the STC communication cost. We have designed, implemented, and evaluated our novel technique, called Structured Sparse Ternary Compression (SSTC). Reported experimental results show that SSTC shrinks compressed updates by a factor of x3 with respect to traditional STC and with a reduction up to x104 with respect to uncompressed FedAvg, at the expense of negligible degradation of the global model accuracy

    The first gamma-ray outburst of a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy: the case of PMN J0948+0022 in July 2010

    We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846) performed in 2010 July-September and triggered by a high-energy gamma-ray outburst observed by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The peak flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy band exceeded, for the first time in this type of source, the value of 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1, corresponding to an observed luminosity of 10^48 erg s^-1. Although the source was too close to the Sun position to organize a densely sampled follow-up, it was possible to gather some multiwavelength data that confirmed the state of high activity across the sampled electromagnetic spectrum. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution of the NLS1 PMN J0948+0022 with that of a typical blazar - like 3C 273 - shows that the power emitted at gamma rays is extreme.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables.     A digital twin decision support system for the urban facility management process

    The ever increasing pace of IoT deployment is opening the door to concrete implementa-tions of smart city applications, enabling the large-scale sensing and modeling of (near-)real-time digital replicas of physical processes and environments. This digital replica could serve as the basis of a decision support system, providing insights into possible optimizations of resources in a smart city scenario. In this article, we discuss an extension of a prior work, presenting a detailed proof-of-concept implementation of a Digital Twin solution for the Urban Facility Management (UFM) process. The Interactive Planning Platform for City District Adaptive Maintenance Operations (IPPODAMO) is a distributed geographical system, fed with and ingesting heterogeneous data sources originating from different urban data providers. The data are subject to continuous refinements and algorithmic processes, used to quantify and build synthetic indexes measuring the activity level inside an area of interest. IPPODAMO takes into account potential interference from other stakeholders in the urban environment, enabling the informed scheduling of operations, aimed at minimizing interference and the costs of operations

    INTEGRAL high energy detection of the transient IGR J11321-5311

    Context: The transient hard X-ray source IGR J11321-5311 was discovered by INTEGRAL on June 2005, during observations of the Crux spiral arm. To date, this is the only detection of the source to be reported by any X/gamma-ray mission. Aims: To characterize the behaviour and hence the nature of the source through temporal and spectral IBIS analysis. Methods: Detailed spectral and temporal analysis has been performed using standard INTEGRAL software OSA v.5.1. Results: To date, IGR J11321-5311 has been detected only once. It was active for about 3.5 hours, a short and bright flare lasting about 1.5 hours is evident in the IBIS light curve. It reached a peak flux of about 80 mCrab or 2.2x10E-9 erg cmE-2 sE-1 (20--300 keV),corresponding to a peak luminosity of 1.1x10E37 erg sE-1 (assuming a distance of 6.5 kpc). During the outburst, the source was detected with a significance of 18 sigma (20--300 keV) and 8 sigma (100--300 keV). The spectrum of the total outburst activity (17--300 keV) is best fitted by the sum of a power law (Gamma=0.55+/-0.18) plus a black body (kT=1.0{+0.2}_{-0.3} keV), with no evidence for a break up to 300 keV. A spectral analysis at Science Window level revealed an evident hardening of the spectrum through the outburst. The IBIS data were searched for pulsations with no positive result. Conclusions: The X-ray spectral shape and the flaring behaviour favour the hypothesis that IGR J11321-5311 is an Anomalous X-ray Pulsar, though a different nature can not be firmly rejected at the present stage.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A letter, 4 pages, 6 figure
