Photodisintegration of the triton with realistic potentials
The process is treated by means of three-body integral
equations employing in their kernel the W-Matrix representation of the
subsystem amplitudes. As compared to the plane wave (Born) approximation the
full solution of the integral equations, which takes into account the final
state interaction, shows at low energies a 24% enhancement. The calculations
are based on the semirealistic Malfliet-Tjon and the realistic Paris and Bonn B
potentials. For comparison with earlier calculations we also present results
for the Yamaguchi potential. In the low-energy region a remarkable potential

All-optical trapping and acceleration of heavy particles
A scheme for fast, compact, and controllable acceleration of heavy particles
in vacuum is proposed, in which two counterpropagating lasers with variable
frequencies drive a beat-wave structure with variable phase velocity, thus
allowing for trapping and acceleration of heavy particles, such as ions or
muons. Fine control over the energy distribution and the total charge of the
beam is obtained via tuning of the frequency variation. The acceleration scheme
is described with a one-dimensional theory, providing the general conditions
for trapping and scaling laws for the relevant features of the particle beam.
Two-dimensional, electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations confirm the

Riemann-Cartan Space-times of G\"odel Type
A class of Riemann-Cartan G\"odel-type space-times are examined in the light
of the equivalence problem techniques. The conditions for local space-time
homogeneity are derived, generalizing previous works on Riemannian G\"odel-type
space-times. The equivalence of Riemann-Cartan G\"odel-type space-times of this
class is studied. It is shown that they admit a five-dimensional group of
affine-isometries and are characterized by three essential parameters : identical triads () correspond to locally
equivalent manifolds. The algebraic types of the irreducible parts of the

Development of HPD Clusters for MAGIC-II
MAGIC-II is the second imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of the MAGIC
observatory, which has recently been inaugurated on Canary island of La Palma.
We are currently developing a new camera based on clusters of hybrid photon
detectors (HPD) for the upgrade of MAGIC-II. The photon detectors feature a
GaAsP photocathode and an avalanche diode as electron bombarded anodes with
internal gain, and were supplied by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (R9792U-40). The
HPD camera with high quantum efficiency will increase the MAGIC-II sensitivity
and lower the energy threshold. The basic performance of the HPDs has been
measured and a prototype of an HPD cluster has been developed to be mounted on
MAGIC-II. Here we report on the status of the HPD cluster and the project of

Intercalation-enhanced electric polarization and chain formation of nano-layered particles
Microscopy observations show that suspensions of synthetic and natural
nano-layered smectite clay particles submitted to a strong external electric
field undergo a fast and extended structuring. This structuring results from
the interaction between induced electric dipoles, and is only possible for
particles with suitable polarization properties. Smectite clay colloids are
observed to be particularly suitable, in contrast to similar suspensions of a
non-swelling clay. Synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments provide the
orientation distributions for the particles. These distributions are understood
in terms of competing (i) homogenizing entropy and (ii) interaction between the
particles and the local electric field; they show that clay particles polarize
along their silica sheet. Furthermore, a change in the platelet separation
inside nano-layered particles occurs under application of the electric field,
indicating that intercalated ions and water molecules play a role in their
electric polarization. The resulting induced dipole is structurally attached to
the particle, and this causes particles to reorient and interact, resulting in
the observed macroscopic structuring. The macroscopic properties of these
electro-rheological smectite suspensions may be tuned by controlling the nature
and quantity of the intercalated species, at the nanoscale.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Effect of extrusion-cooking in total carotenoids content in cream and orange flesh sweet potato cultivars.
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a food crop that supplies energy, minerals and vitamins C and B. Some cultivars are very rich in carotenoids (pro-vitamin A). In this study were evaluated and compared the total carotenoids content of two cultivars and the losses on the dehydrated extruded sweet potato flour. Samples from organic and conventional crops were analyzed, in the form of fresh and dehydrated extruded samples. Total carotenoids content of the fresh product, expressed on wet basis, was of 437 µg 100 g-1 for the cream cultivar and 10,12 µg 100 g-1 for the orange cultivar. After dehydration, losses of total carotenoids were of 41% and 38%, respectively. The fresh orange cultivar presented high total carotenoids content in comparison to the cream cultivar. The extruded orange sweet potato flour showed the lowest losses in total carotenoids. Therefore, the processed flour of orange sweet potato could be used to obtain pre-gelatinized extruded flour with high total carotenoids content.A batata-doce (Ipomoea batatas) é um alimento fonte rico em energia, minerais, vitaminas C e B. Algumas cultivares são ricas em pró-vitamina A. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar e comparar o conteúdo de carotenóides totais em duas cultivares de batata-doce e determinar suas perdas na obtenção da farinha desidratada e processada por extrusão. Foram analisadas amostras de sistema de cultivo orgânico e convencional, tanto as frescas como as extrusadas desidratadas. O conteúdo de carotenóides totais do produto fresco, expressos em base úmida, foi de 437 µg 100 g-1 para a cultivar creme e de 10,120 µg 100g-1 para a cultivar alaranjada. Após o processo de desidratação das amostras, as perdas de carotenóides totais foram de 41% para a batata-doce creme e 38% para a alaranjada, respectivamente. Os resultados indicaram alto conteúdo de carotenóides totais para a cultivar alaranjada fresca, quando comparado com a cultivar creme. A amostra de farinha de batata-doce extrusada apresentou menor perda de carotenóides totais. Desta forma, verifica-se que a farinha de batata-doce alaranjada pode ser utilizada na obtenção de uma farinha pré-gelatinizada com alto conteúdo de carotenóides totais
