American Media Portrayals of the Uighur Minority Pre and Post 9/11

The Muslim Uighur ethnic minority in China has long been repressed by the Chinese Central Government in a way not dissimilar from the Tibetan ethnic minority. While policy decisions, assimilation projects, and systematic restriction of freedoms support this claim, Americans with interest in the area have a more complex relationship with opinion on Uighurs. Americans have a history of supporting restive groups within Communist systems, but post 9/11 there has been a backlash against those groups that also can be identified as Muslim fundamentalists. Through observing American newspaper sources it is expected that a shift will be seen in the tone of articles related to Uighurs post 9/11

Growth of Sr1-xCaxRuO3 thin films by metalorganic aerosol deposition

We report the growth of thin films of Sr1-xCaxRuO3 on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates by metalorganic aerosol deposition. The structure and microstructure is characterized by X-ray diffraction and room-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), respectively. STM indicates in-plane epitaxy and a small surface roughness for films on SrTiO3. The high-quality of the films is supported by large residual resistivity ratios up to 29.Comment: 4 Pages, 2 Figures, submitted to Proceedings of ICM 2009 (Karlsruhe

Optimization of Induced-Power from Dynamic Inflow Theory with Realistic Constraints

Finite-state induced-inflow theory is used to develop an analytic formulation for general performance of the lifting rotor with arbitrary loading. The theory incorporates conventional blade-element theory for blade lift and provides the integrated loads and the induced-power of the rotor in terms of an arbitrary number of rotor controls such as conventional collective and cyclic pitch as well as higher harmonic radial and azimuthal pitch. The theory provides the basis for a classical quadratic optimization with realistic constraints that is applied to determine minimum induced-power for a variety of available control combinations, rotor trim constraints, and operating conditions. The findings show significantly increased induced-power relative to ideal Glauert power at moderate and high advance ratios that also depends on the rotor moment trim constraints. Higher harmonic and radial blade twist significantly reduce the non-ideal induced-power increment. It appears that increasing the available controls enables the optimum solution to redistribute the rotor loading so as to minimize the induced-power

Psychometric Properties of Three Common Depression Measures in Breast Cancer Patients with Major Depressive Disorder

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and MDD is the most common mental health problem in women with breast cancer. There is lack of research on measures of depression in this population. This study examined the psychometric properties of three commonly used depression measures, the BDI-II, CES-D, and HRSD, with clinically depressed breast cancer patients (n = 127). Findings revealed the measures displayed good distributional characteristics, internal consistency, and convergent validity. Discriminative validity with the BAI was not demonstrated, however, and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the existing models of these measures are inadequate. The results indicate that these measures are appropriate for use with clinically depressed breast cancer patients, but that further investigation of discriminative validity is necessary to better determine construct validity with anxiety measures. Because of inadequate fit of this sample with existing models, interpretation of scores on these measures may be better accomplished via reference to more valid structural models obtained through exploratory factor analyses, providing a more accurate conceptualization of the dimensions of MDD in breast cancer patients
