    Raman Fingerprint of Charged Impurities in Graphene

    We report strong variations in the Raman spectra for different single-layer graphene samples obtained by micromechanical cleavage, which reveals the presence of excess charges, even in the absence of intentional doping. Doping concentrations up to ~10^13 cm-2 are estimated from the G peak shift and width, and the variation of both position and relative intensity of the second order 2D peak. Asymmetric G peaks indicate charge inhomogeneity on the scale of less than 1 micron.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

    Dynamical and radiative properties of astrophysical supersonic jets I. Cocoon morphologies

    We present the results of a numerical analysis of the propagation and interaction of a supersonic jet with the external medium. We discuss the motion of the head of the jet into the ambient in different physical conditions, carrying out calculations with different Mach numbers and density ratios of the jet to the exteriors. Performing the calculation in a reference frame in motion with the jet head, we can follow in detail its long term dynamics. This numerical scheme allows us also to study the morphology of the cocoon for different physical parameters. We find that the propagation velocity of the jet head into the ambient medium strongly influences the morphology of the cocoon, and this result can be relevant in connection to the origin and structure of lobes in extragalactic radiosources.Comment: 14 pages, TeX.     This paper provides a comparative analysis of statistical methods to evaluate the consumer perception about the quality of Services of General Interest. The evaluation of the service quality perceived by users is usually based on Customer Satisfaction Survey data and an ex-post evaluation is then performed. Another approach, consisting in evaluating Consumers preferences, supplies an ex-ante information on Service Quality. Here, the ex-post approach is considered, two non-standard techniques - the Rasch Model and the Nonlinear Principal Component Analysis - are presented and the potential of both methods is discussed.     Two distinct desynchronization processes caused by lesions in globally coupled neurons

    To accomplish a task, the brain works like a synchronized neuronal network where all the involved neurons work together. When a lesion spreads in the brain, depending on its evolution, it can reach a significant portion of relevant area. As a consequence, a phase transition might occur: the neurons desynchronize and cannot perform a certain task anymore. Lesions are responsible for either disrupting the neuronal connections or, in some cases, for killing the neuron. In this work, we will use a simplified model of neuronal network to show that these two types of lesions cause different types of desynchronization.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Update On The Code Intercomparison and Benchmark For Muon Fluence and Absorbed Dose Induced By An 18-GeV Electron Beam After Massive Iron Shielding

    In 1974, Nelson, Kase and Svensson published an experimental investigation on muon shielding around SLAC high-energy electron accelerators. They measured muon fluence and absorbed dose induced by 14 and 18 GeV electron beams hitting a copper/water beamdump and attenuated in a thick steel shielding. In their paper, they compared the results with the theoretical models available at that time. In order to compare their experimental results with present model calculations, we use the modern transport Monte Carlo codes MARS15, FLUKA2011 and GEANT4 to model the experimental setup and run simulations.     Multiple merging events in Abell 521

    We present a detailed spatial and dynamical analysis of the central ∌\sim~2.2~\h~Mpc region of the galaxy cluster Abell~521 (z=0.247), based on 238 spectra obtained at the 3.6~m Telescope of ESO and at the CFHT. From the analysis of the 125 galaxies confirmed members of the cluster, we derive a mean velocity of 74019−125+11274019 ^{+112}_{-125} km/s and detect a complex velocity distribution with high velocity dispersion, 1325−100+1451325 ^{+145}_{-100} km/s), but clear departure from a single gaussian component. The general structure of the cluster follows a NW/SE direction, crossed by a perpendicular high density ``ridge'' of galaxies in the core region. The northern region of the cluster is characterized by a lower velocity dispersion as compared to the whole cluster value; it hosts the BCG and a dynamically bound complex of galaxies, and it is associated to a group detected in X-ray (Arnaud et al 2000). This region could be in pre-merger stage onto the main cluster nearly in the plane of the sky. These results, taken together with the fact that most of the clumps detected on the isodensity maps, as well as the early type galaxies and the brightest ones are aligned, suggest that this NW/SE direction is the preferred one for the formation of this cluster. The central high dense region shows a lower velocity location (73625−350+34473625 ^{+344}_{-350} km/s) and significantly higher scale (1780−142+2341780 ^{+234}_{-142} km/s) as compared to the whole cluster values. This is due to the presence of a low-velocity group of galaxies with a high fraction of emission line objects. This can be explained in a scenario in which a merging of subclusters has recently occurred along the direction of the ``ridge'' with a significant component along the line of sight.Comment: 21 pages, 32 figures, uses aa.cls style, Latex.     In [arXiv:0804.3035] we studied an interacting particle system which can be also interpreted as a stochastic growth model. This model belongs to the anisotropic KPZ class in 2+1 dimensions. In this paper we present the results that are relevant from the perspective of stochastic growth models, in particular: (a) the surface fluctuations are asymptotically Gaussian on a sqrt(ln(t)) scale and (b) the correlation structure of the surface is asymptotically given by the massless field.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Two brains in action: joint-action coding in the primate frontal cortex

    Daily life often requires the coordination of our actions with those of another partner. After sixty years (1968-2018) of behavioral neurophysiology of motor control, the neural mechanisms which allow such coordination in primates are unknown. We studied this issue by recording cell activity simultaneously from dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) of two male interacting monkeys trained to coordinate their hand forces to achieve a common goal. We found a population of 'joint-action cells' that discharged preferentially when monkeys cooperated in the task. This modulation was predictive in nature, since in most cells neural activity led in time the changes of the "own" and of the "other" behavior. These neurons encoded the joint-performance more accurately than 'canonical action-related cells', activated by the action per se, regardless of the individual vs. interactive context. A decoding of joint-action was obtained by combining the two brains activities, using cells with directional properties distinguished from those associated to the 'solo' behaviors. Action observation-related activity studied when one monkey observed the consequences of the partner's behavior, i.e. the cursor's motion on the screen, did not sharpen the accuracy of 'joint-action cells' representation, suggesting that it plays no major role in encoding joint-action. When monkeys performed with a non-interactive partner, such as a computer, 'joint-action cells' representation of the "other" (non-cooperative) behavior was significantly degraded. These findings provide evidence of how premotor neurons integrate the time-varying representation of the self-action with that of a co-actor, thus offering a neural substrate for successful visuo-motor coordination between individuals.SIGNIFICANT STATEMENTThe neural bases of inter-subject motor coordination were studied by recording cell activity simultaneously from the frontal cortex of two interacting monkeys, trained to coordinate their hand forces to achieve a common goal. We found a new class of cells, preferentially active when the monkeys cooperated, rather than when the same action was performed individually. These 'joint-action neurons' offered a neural representation of joint-behaviors by far more accurate than that provided by the canonical action-related cells, modulated by the action per se regardless of the individual/interactive context. A neural representation of joint-performance was obtained by combining the activity recorded from the two brains. Our findings offer the first evidence concerning neural mechanisms subtending interactive visuo-motor coordination between co-acting agents
