    Validation of ash/dust detections from SEVIRI data using ACTRIS/EARLINET ground-based LIDAR measurements

    Twotailored configurations of the Robust Satellite Technique (RST) multi-temporal approach, for airborne volcanic ash and desert dust detection, have been tested in the framework of the European Natural Airborne Disaster Information and Coordination System for Aviation (EUNADICS-AV) project. The two algorithms, running on Spinning Enhanced Visible Infra-Red Imager (SEVIRI) data, were previously assessed over wide areas by comparison with independent satellite-based aerosol products. In this study, we present results of a first validation analysis of the above mentioned satellite-based ash/dust products using independent, ground-based observations coming from the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). The aim is to assess the capabilities of RST-based ash/dust products in providing useful information even at local scale and to verify their applicability as a "trigger" to timely activate EARLINET measurements during airborne hazards. The intense Saharan dust event of May 18-23 2008-which affected both the Mediterranean Basin and Continental Europe-and the strong explosive eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull (Iceland) volcano of April-May 2010, were analyzed as test cases. Our results show that both RST-based algorithms were capable of providing reliable information about the investigated phenomena at specific sites of interest, successfully detecting airborne ash/dust in different geographic regions using both nighttime and daytime SEVIRI data. However, the validation analysis also demonstrates that ash/dust layers remain undetected by satellite in the presence of overlying meteorological clouds and when they are tenuous (i.e., with an integrated backscatter coefficient less than ~0.001 sr-1 and with aerosol backscatter coefficient less than ~1 × 10-6 m-1sr-1). This preliminary analysis confirms that the continuity of satellite-based observations can be used to timely "trigger" ground-based LIDAR measurements in case of airborne hazard events. Finally, this work confirms that advanced satellite-based detection schemes may provide a relevant contribution to the monitoring of ash/dust phenomena and that the synergistic use of (satellite-based) large scale, continuous and timely records with (ground-based) accurate and quantitative measurements may represent an added value, especially in operational scenarios

    What antarctic plants can tell us about climate changes: Temperature as a driver for metabolic reprogramming

    Global warming is strongly affecting the maritime Antarctica climate and the consequent melting of perennial snow and ice covers resulted in increased colonization by plants. Colobanthus quitensis is a vascular plant highly adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of Antarctic Peninsula and understanding how the plant is responding to global warming is a new challenging target for modern cell physiology. To this aim, we performed differential proteomic analysis on C. quitensis plants grown in natural conditions compared to plants grown for one year inside open top chambers (OTCs) which determine an increase of about 4 °C at midday, mimicking the effect of global warming. A thorough analysis of the up and downregulated proteins highlighted an extensive metabolism reprogramming leading to enhanced photoprotection and oxidative stress control as well as reduced content of cell wall components. Overall, OTCs growth seems to be advantageous for C. quitensis plants which could benefit from a better CO2 diffusion into the mesophyll and a reduced ROS‐mediated photodamage

    Object-oriented Programming Laws for Annotated Java Programs

    Object-oriented programming laws have been proposed in the context of languages that are not combined with a behavioral interface specification language (BISL). The strong dependence between source-code and interface specifications may cause a number of difficulties when transforming programs. In this paper we introduce a set of programming laws for object-oriented languages like Java combined with the Java Modeling Language (JML). The set of laws deals with object-oriented features taking into account their specifications. Some laws deal only with features of the specification language. These laws constitute a set of small transformations for the development of more elaborate ones like refactorings

    Observational Evidence of the Basin-Wide Gyre Reversal in the Gulf of Taranto

    The paper shows for the first time the observational evidence of basin-wide gyre reversal in the Gulf of Taranto (north-western Ionian Sea in the eastern Mediterranean Sea) by means of two specifically designed in situ oceanographic campaigns (based on CTD and ADCP measurements). The analysis of the in situ data shows a change in circulation from anticyclonic in October 2014 to cyclonic in June\u2013July 2016. Furthermore, long-term (1993\u20132018) analysis using gridded satellite altimetry data in the Gulf of Taranto shows that the cyclonic gyres are more frequent than anticyclonic gyres. The latter occur only for 2 to 3 years at a time in some decades

    European real world trans-catheter aortic valve implantation:systematic review and meta-analysis of European national registries

    OBJECTIVE: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been adopted rapidly in Europe. TAVI national registries can augment understanding of technologies and represent real-world experience, providing further clinical insights. We undertook a meta-analysis of published European national TAVI registries to assess current results following TAVI in Europe. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched. The review focused on the comparison of the following TAVI strategies: transfemoral (TF) and transapical (TA) SAPIEN and CoreValve implantation. Individual event rates for outcomes of interest were pooled using a mixed effect model. RESULTS: Seven European national TAVI registries (UK, Swiss, Belgium, Italy, Spain, France, Germany) were identified, including a total of 9786 patients who received TF-SAPIEN (n = 2885), TA-SAPIEN (n = 2252) and CoreValve (n = 4649) implantation. Pooled incidence of 30-day mortality was 0.08% [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.05–0.11], 0.12% [95% CI: 0.07–0.19] and 0.06% [95% CI: 0.03–0.11] for TF-SAPIEN, TA-SAPIEN and CoreValve respectively (test for subgroup difference P = 0.18); there was high heterogeneity across European countries. Pooled incidence of stroke was comparable among the TAVI strategies (test for subgroup difference P = 0.79); the incidence of post-procedural moderate paravalvular leak ≥ 2 (P = 0.9) was similar across groups. CoreValve implantation was associated with an increased risk of pacemaker implantation (0.22 [95% CI: 0.19–0.26]; test for subgroup difference P < 0.0001). The lowest 30-day mortality was associated with TAVI performed in Spain (b coefficient −4.3; P = 0.03), in Italy (b coefficient −2.1; P < 0.0001), in UK (b coefficient −1.95; P = 0.01) and in France (b coefficient −2.8; P = 0.03). The German registry has the highest mortality for every TAVI strategy amongst all other European registries and especially for the TA-SAPIEN group. CONCLUSIONS: Transarterial TAVI approaches were associated with a low early mortality regardless of the type of device used. There was marked heterogeneity among European countries for early mortality

    The automatized workflow of a radiation oncology department: a complete integration of the oncology information system MOSAIQ with hospital information system

    OBJECTIVE: To fully integrate the OIS (MOSAIQ by Elekta) and the Hospital Information System (HIS) to increase efficiency, quality, and safety of care and to streamline clinical workflows and processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: More than 25 dedicated staff members are currently working at the Radiotherapy Unit of our Institute and treat approximately 700 patients per year with two Elekta linear accelerators. Within a radiation treatment, there is a series of clinical and organizational steps that it is indispensable to do to avoid errors or excessive resource consumption. Our experience has led to the creation of structured workflows to overcome these critical issues through the optimization and integration of HIS and OIS, respectively our hospital and our Radiotherapy Unit data management systems. RESULTS: Through the integration of the main management programs available and the creation of standardized therapeutic paths based on logistical and clinical needs, we managed to optimize both quality of care and accounting services provided. CONCLUSIONS: The integration of different operating systems and the definition of standardized steps within the workflow has led to the abolition of unnecessary operations, making it easier to manage patients’ care and prescription accounting. Furthermore, clinical records have become more readily and accessible by health care providers of our unit. All this translates into a decreased risk of misinformation, or time loss due to bureaucratic and organizational issues, therefore, allowing a significant increase in staff efficiency

    Glioma-associated stem cells: A novel class of tumor-supporting cells able to predict prognosis of human low-grade gliomas.

    Background: Translational medicine aims at transferring advances in basic science research into new approaches for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Low-grade gliomas (LGG) have a heterogeneous clinical behavior that can be only partially predicted employing current state-of-the-art markers, hindering the decision-making process. To deepen our comprehension on tumor heterogeneity, we dissected the mechanism of interaction between tumor cells and relevant components of the neoplastic environment, isolating, from LGG and high-grade gliomas (HGG), proliferating stem cell lines from both the glioma stroma and, where possible, the neoplasm. Methods and Findings: We isolated glioma-associated stem cells (GASC) from LGG (n=40) and HGG (n=73). GASC showed stem cell features, anchorage-independent growth, and supported the malignant properties of both A172 cells and human glioma-stem cells, mainly through the release of exosomes. Finally, starting from GASC obtained from HGG (n=13) and LGG (n=12) we defined a score, based on the expression of 9 GASC surface markers, whose prognostic value was assayed on 40 subsequent LGG-patients. At the multivariate Cox analysis, the GASC-based score was the only independent predictor of overall survival and malignant progression free-survival. Conclusions: The microenvironment of both LGG and HGG hosts non-tumorigenic multipotent stem cells that can increase in vitro the biological aggressiveness of glioma-initiating cells through the release of exosomes. The clinical importance of this finding is supported by the strong prognostic value associated with the characteristics of GASC. This patient-based approach can provide a groundbreaking method to predict prognosis and to exploit novel strategies that target the tumor stroma

    Effect of acute administration of dietary Pistacia lentiscus L. essential oil on the ischemia-reperfusion-induced changes in rat frontal cortex and plasma

    In this study Pistacia lentiscus L. essential oil (E.O.), a mixture of terpenes and sesquiterpenes, was tested for its protective effects in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induced injury in Wistar rat frontal cortex and plasma. Cerebral ischemia was produced by a 20 min bilateral common carotid artery occlusion followed by 30 min reperfusion. Pistacia lentiscus L. essential oil (E.O.) (200 mg/0, 45 ml of sunflower oil as vehicle) was administered via gavage 6 hours prior to ischemia. Rats were randomly assigned to four groups, ischemic/reperfused (I/R) and sham-operated rats treated with the vehicle or with E.O.. Different brain areas were analysed for fatty acid changes and expression of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Ischemia/reperfusion triggered in frontal cortex a decrease of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the membrane highly polyunsaturated fatty acid (HPUFA) most susceptible to oxidation. Pre-treatment with E.O. prevented this change and led further to decreased levels of COX-2, as assessed by Western Blot. In plasma of ischemic/reperfused rats, E.O. administration increased both the DHA-to-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio and levels of the endocannabinoid congeners palmytoylethanolamide (PEA) and oleoylethanolamide (OEA). The results obtained suggest that ischemia/reperfusion triggers a cerebral insult sufficient to cause a a region specific lipid peroxidation as evidenced by the detectable, significant decrease in the tissue level of DHA, the most abundant essential fatty acid of neuronal membrane phospholipids. Acute dietary pre-treatment with E.O. triggers modifications both in the frontal cortex, where COX-2 expression decreases and the decrease of DHA is apparently prevented, and in plasma, where PEA and OEA levels increase. We suggest that the activity of PEA and OEA, as endogenous ligands of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-alpha, by inducing the peroxisomal beta oxidation, may explain the observed increase in the DHA/EPA ratio. The latter, in fact, might account for an increased metabolism of n-3 aimed at restoring DHA within damaged brain tissue. The possibility that changes in fatty acid metabolism and plasmatic availability of PEA and OEA are correlated events represents an issue worth future investigations
