Marriage and care of a spouse with dementia: a cross-cultural study Brazil-Portugal

    Get PDF
This study aimed to analyze the meaning of marriage and care of the spouse from the perspective of Brazilian and Portuguese caregivers of elderly people with Alzheimer Disease (AD). Twelve women participated in the study, being the sample obtained by convenience using the snowball technique. We used a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, data were analyzed by the Bardin content analysis technique. The results pointed out that although the cultural differences between Brazil and Portugal, some meanings related to marriage and care of the spouse in the context of AD were similar for Brazilian and Portuguese wives. Despite marital changes related to dementia, most wives felt well performing their role of caregiver, perhaps because among other variables, this is a task traditionally and culturally expected to be performed by women of both countries.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Bladder Cancer New Biomarkers in Liquid Biopsies

Bladder cancer is one of the most common neoplasia in men in the developed countries. Diagnosis and surveillance are made by bladder examination through cystoscopy making this one of the most expensive on cost/patient. After tumor removal, clinical staging is important for prognosis and treatment decision as non-muscle invasive (Ta and T1) and invasive (T2+) are treated in a completely different way. Today no noninvasive method has enough sensitivity to substitute cystoscopy or histological examination for tumor clinical staging. Our aim is to identify and quantify in urine, proteins that can detect and classify bladder tumors. A biomarker study was conducted using urine samples from: individuals with bladder cancer; individuals with other genitourinary disorders and individuals without urological diseases. Several proteins were found to successfully help in the discrimination of the bladder cancer stages Ta, T1 and T2+. Two biomarkerpanels were developed, one capable of detecting bladder cancer presence and other able to distinguish Ta, T1 and T2+. Our results show a significant difference between urinary proteome in patients with different bladder cancer stages. This may allow through liquid biopsies predict patient’s cancer stage. A validation study is on progress to attest this biomarker panel’s accuracy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Optical limiting behavior of bismuth oxide-based glass in the visible range

    No full text
The authors report experimental results on the optical limiting behavior of a bismuth oxide-based glass by exciting the samples with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 and 598 nm. The results show that two-photon and free-carrier absorption processes contribute for the nonlinear absorption. Values for β, the two-photon absorption coefficient, and σe, the absorption cross section due to free carriers, were determined. The values for β and σe are dependent on the amount of bismuth oxide in the glass composition

Generation of multiple ultrashort solitons in a third-order nonlinear composite medium with self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities

Theoretical consideration of the propagation of femtosecond-Gaussian pulses in a 1D composite medium, consisting of alternating self-focusing (SF) and self-defocusing (SDF) waveguide segments with normal group-velocity dispersion predicts the generation of trains of bright solitons when an optical pulse first propagates in the SF segment, followed by the SDF one. The multiple temporal compression (MTC) process, based on this setting, offers a method for controllable generation of multiple ultrashort temporal solitons. Numerical solutions of the generalized nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation modeling this system demonstrate that the intrapulse Raman scattering plays a major role in the temporal and spectral dynamics. Collisions between ultrashort solitons with different central wavelengths are addressed too. The paper provides, for the first time, a procedure for producing controllable trains of ultrashort temporal solitons by incident optical pulses propagating in a composite medium.Comment: To be published in Phys. Toxicological Study Employing Repeated Doses of Garcinielliptone FC, a Polyisoprenylated-Benzophenone Isolated from Seed of Platonia Insignis Mart

    Get PDF
The major constituent from the hexane extract of the seeds of P. insignis is GFC (garcinielliptone FC). Doses of 25, 50and 75 mg/kg of GFC were aseptically suspended in 0.05% Tween 80 dissolved in 0.9% saline (vehicle) and orally administered for30, 90 and 120 consecutive days to adult Swiss mice. In this work, the repeated oral administration, in animals of both sexes, demonstrates that this compound is not able to induce mortality and/or behavioral changes in adult mice. In addition, body weightgain, feed intake and disposal of excreta were not altered by the administration of this compound with repeated doses. Furthermore,no differences in weight and macroscopic structure of the brain, liver, kidney, lung, heart and spleen between groups of male andfemale adult mice were observed after treatment. During the periods of treatment, GFC produced no significant changes onhaematological and biochemical parameters in male and female mice treated with all doses used. The aim of this study was toinvestigate the toxicological potential of GFC through behavioral, hematological, biochemical and morphological parameters inanimals in order to ensure the safe use of Platonia insignis in folk medicine.Fil: Silva, Ana P..
