Bachelors, Bastards, and Nomadic Masculinity: Illegitimacy in Guy de Maupassant and André Gide Robert M. Fagley, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation is a thematic exploration of bachelor figures and male bastards in literary works by Guy de Maupassant and André Gide. The coupling of Maupassant and Gide is appropriate for such an analysis, not only because of their mutual treatment of illegitimacy, but also because each writer represents a chronologically identifiable literary movement, Realism and Modernism, and each writes during contiguous moments of socio-legal changes particularly related to divorce law and women's rights, which consequently have great influence on the legal destiny of illegitimate or "natural" children. Napoleon's Civil Code of 1804 provides the legal(patriarchal) framework for the period of this study of illegitimacy, from about 1870 to 1925. The Civil Code saw numerous changes during this period. The Naquet Law of 1884, which reestablished limited legal divorce, represents the central socio-legal event of the turn of the century in matters of legitimacy, whereas the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the First World War furnish chronological bookends for this dissertation. Besides through history, law, and sociology, this dissertation treats illegitimacy through the lens of various branches of gender theory, particularly the study of masculinities and a handful of other important critical theories, most importantly those of Michel Foucault, Eve Sedgwick and of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Bachelors and bastards are two principal players in the representation of illegitimacy in Maupassant and Gide, but this study considers the theme of illegitimacy as extended beyond simple questions of legitimate versus illegitimate children. The male bastard is only one of the "counterfeit" characters examined in these authors' fictional texts. This dissertation is divided into three parts which consider specific thematic elements of their "bastard narratives." Part One frames the representation in fiction of bachelor figures and how they contribute to or the role they play in instances of illegitimacy. Part Two springs from and develops the metaphor of the "counterfeit coin," whether represented by a bastard son, an affected schoolboy, a false priest, or a pretentious littérateur. Part Three explains the concept of "nomadic masculine" practices; such practices include nomadic styles of masculinity development as well as the bastard's nomadism

Learning from the Past, Looking to the Future: Modeling Social Unrest in Karachi, Pakistan

Social unrest represents a major challenge for policy makers around the globe, as it can quickly escalate from small scale disturbances to highly public protests, riots and even civil war. This research was motivated by a need to understand social instability and to unpack the comments made during a spring 2013 conference hosted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Center for Global Security and the U.S. Institute for Peace, where policymakers noted that models considering social instability are often not suitable for decision-making. This analysis shows that existing state level models of instability could be improved in spatial scale to the city level, even without significantly improved data access. Better data would make this analysis more complete and likely improve the quality of the model. Another challenge with incorporating modeling into decision-making is the need to understand uncertainty in a model. Policy makers are frequently tasked with making decisions without a clear outcome, so characterization of uncertainty is critical. This report describes the work and findings of the project. It took place in three phases: a literature review of social stability research, a “hindsight scan” that looked at historical data, and a “foresight scan” looking at future scenarios

On Two-Player Pebbling

Graph pebbling can be extended to a two-player game on a graph G, called Two-Player Graph Pebbling, with players Mover and Defender. The players each use pebbling moves, the act of removing two pebbles from one vertex and placing one of the pebbles on an adjacent vertex, to win. Mover wins if they can place a pebble on a specified vertex. Defender wins if the specified vertex is pebble-free and there are no more pebbling moves on the vertices of G. The Two-Player Pebbling Number of a graph G, η(G), is the minimum m such that for every arrangement of m pebbles and for any specified vertex, Mover can win. We specify the winning player for paths, cycles, and the join of certain graphs

Offshore Energy Geopolitics: An Examination of Emerging Risks to Future Oil and Gas Activities in Hotspot Maritime Regions

As the world’s conventional oil and gas fields decline, the oil and gas industry seeks to exploit new sources of energy to satisfy demand and promote economic growth. The most promising geographical regions left to explore are offshore waters that contain a substantial reserve base that contain decades of supply. Although offshore development is not new, certain regions slated for production are vulnerable to a wide-array of risks that might derail future activity. The examination of these risks is a timely study given its relevance to energy security and the ever-increasing vulnerabilities in maritime regions. To better explain the offshore energy geopolitical landscape, this thesis explores three regions – the South China Sea, Arctic, and the Gulf of Guinea. Each region typifies political, legal, economic and environmental risks associated with offshore development; however, each region is faced with markedly different risks to future operations. Whether this includes territorial disputes between claimants over control of seabed resources in the South China Sea, the absence of an effective framework to govern and regulate offshore activities in the Arctic, or the emergence of oil theft and maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, each chapter highlights the importance of addressing these risks. In response, the thesis provides mitigating strategies and policy recommendations to alleviate tensions, resolve gaps in governance and regulation and combat maritime piracy. The thesis makes clear that if offshore development is to reach its potential, national governments, the private sector, and the international community must address such risks with resoluteness to enhance global energy security and effectively combat new forms of volatility

The sequential-clustered method for dynamic chemical plant simulation

We describe the design, development and testing of a prototype simulator to study problems associated with robust and efficient solution of dynamic process problems, particularly for systems with models containing moderately to very stiff ordinary differential equations and associated algebraic equations.A new predictor--corrector integration strategy and modular dynamic simulator architecture allow for simultaneous treatment of equations arising from individual modules (equipment units), clusters of modules, or in the limit, all modules associated with a process. This "sequential-clustered" method allows for sequential and simultaneous modular integration as extreme cases.Testing of the simulator using simple but nontrivial plant models indicates that the clustered integration strategy is often the best choice, with good accuracy, reasonable execution time and moderate storage requirements.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/28737/1/0000564.pd
