Nonlinear elasticity of stiff biopolymers connected by flexible linkers
Networks of the biopolymer actin, cross-linked by the compliant protein filamin, form soft gels. They can, however, withstand large shear stresses due to their pronounced nonlinear elastic behavior. The nonlinear elasticity can be controlled by varying the number of cross-links per actin filament. We propose and test a model of rigid filaments decorated by multiple flexible linkers that is in quantitative agreement with experiment. This allows us to estimate loads on individual cross-links, which we find to be less than 10 pN. © 2009 The American Physical Society
Landau-De Gennes theory of nematic liquid\ud crystals: the Oseen-Frank limit and beyond
We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in W 1,2 , to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and the regularity of the eigenvectors of the Landau-De Gennes global minimizer.\ud

We also study the interplay between biaxiality and uniaxiality in Landau-De Gennes global energy minimizers and obtain estimates for various related quantities such as the biaxiality parameter and the size of admissible strongly biaxial regions
Higgs algebraic symmetry of screened system in a spherical geometry
The orbits and the dynamical symmetries for the screened Coulomb potentials
and isotropic harmonic oscillators have been studied by Wu and Zeng [Z. B. Wu
and J. Y. Zeng, Phys. Rev. A 62,032509 (2000)]. We find the similar properties
in the responding systems in a spherical space, whose dynamical symmetries are
described by Higgs Algebra. There exists a conserved aphelion and perihelion
vector, which, together with angular momentum, constitute the generators of the

Dual paths node-disjoint routing for data salvation in mobile ad hoc
The operational patterns of multifarious backup strategies on AODV-based (Ad-hoc On-Demand Vector) routing protocols are elaborated in this article. To have a broader picture on relevant routing protocols together, variants of AODV-based backup routing protocols are formulated by corresponding algorithms, and also each of them are simulated to obtain the necessary performance metrics for comparisons in terms of packet delivery ratio, average latency delay, and the normalized routing load. Then to make the process of data salvation more efficiently in case of link failure, we explore the possibility of combining the AODV backup routing strategy and on-demand node-disjoint multipath routing protocols. This article proposes an improved approach named DPNR (Dual Paths Node-disjoint Routing) for data salvation, a routing protocol that maintains the only two shortest backup paths in the source and destination nodes. The DPNR scheme can alleviate the redundancy-frames overhead during the process of data salvation by the neighboring intermediate nodes. Our simulation results have demonstrated that DPNR scheme delivers good data delivery performance while restricting the impacts of transmission collision and channel contention. The mathematical rationale for our proposed approach is stated as well
A simple variational approach to the quantum Frenkel-Kontorova model
We present a simple and complete variational approach to the one-dimensional
quantum Frenkel-Kontorova model. Dirac's time-dependent variational principle
is adopted together with a Hatree-type many-body trial wavefunction for the
atoms. The single-particle state is assumed to have the Jackiw-Kerman form. We
obtain an effective classical Hamiltonian for the system which is simple enough
for a complete numerical solution for the static ground state of the model.
Numerical results show that our simple approach captures the essence of the
quantum effects first observed in quantum Monte Carlo studies.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Landslides affecting sedimentary characteristics of reservoir basin
Typhoons Aere (2004) and Matsa (2005) caused high nephelometric turbidity in the Shihmen reservoir in northern Taiwan, jeopardizing the operation of the reservoir for several days, and ultimately impacting the living conditions and economy of the downstream residents. The torrential rains caused landslides and debris flows in upland areas, and flowed into riverbeds, likely contributing significantly to the suspended sediment yields in the reservoir. This investigation elucidates how upland landslides affect sediment attributes in the reservoir basin. Study methods including field observations, spatial analysis in GIS and aerial photo interpretation are adopted to trace the sediment sources and contributing factors to the landslide. Torrential rains induced landslides and debris-flows upland, causing river incisions and soil erosion in landslide areas lacking vegetation. These factors, together with the conditions of the engineered structures and geologic vulnerabilities of the area, caused suspended sediment yield in the reservoir. The high nephelometric turbidity could potentially reoccur, with masses of landslide-derived sediment remaining upland and in the riverbed

The article presents findings from an exploratory study investigating the nature of collaborative research and development in creative industries. Participants in the study are two creative SMEs with extensive experience of participating in collaborative projects. A collective case study approach is adopted with data collected on the factors impinging on the effectiveness of such collaborations. Findings are presented at the macro and micro levels of such collaborations. The paper concludes with a summary of some of the challenges faced by small creative SMEs when collaborating with other organizations during the research and development process
A novel semi-fragile forensic watermarking scheme for remote sensing images
Peer-reviewedA semi-fragile watermarking scheme for multiple band images is presented. We propose to embed a mark into remote sensing images applying a tree structured vector quantization approach to the pixel signatures, instead of processing each band separately. The signature of themmultispectral or hyperspectral image is used to embed the mark in it order to detect any significant modification of the original image. The image is segmented into threedimensional blocks and a tree structured vector quantizer is built for each block. These trees are manipulated using an iterative algorithm until the resulting block satisfies a required criterion which establishes the embedded mark. The method is shown to be able to preserve the mark under lossy compression (above a given threshold) but, at the same time, it detects possibly forged blocks and their position in the whole image.Se presenta un esquema de marcas de agua semi-frágiles para múltiples imágenes de banda. Proponemos incorporar una marca en imágenes de detección remota, aplicando un enfoque de cuantización del vector de árbol estructurado con las definiciones de píxel, en lugar de procesar cada banda por separado. La firma de la imagen hiperespectral se utiliza para insertar la marca en el mismo orden para detectar cualquier modificación significativa de la imagen original. La imagen es segmentada en bloques tridimensionales y un cuantificador de vector de estructura de árbol se construye para cada bloque. Estos árboles son manipulados utilizando un algoritmo iteractivo hasta que el bloque resultante satisface un criterio necesario que establece la marca incrustada. El método se muestra para poder preservar la marca bajo compresión con pérdida (por encima de un umbral establecido) pero, al mismo tiempo, detecta posiblemente bloques forjados y su posición en la imagen entera.Es presenta un esquema de marques d'aigua semi-fràgils per a múltiples imatges de banda. Effects of dimers on cooperation in the spatial prisoner's dilemma game
We investigate the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game in structured
populations by introducing dimers, which are defined as that two players in
each dimer always hold a same strategy. We find that influences of dimers on
cooperation depend on the type of dimers and the population structure. For
those dimers in which players interact with each other, the cooperation level
increases with the number of dimers though the cooperation improvement level
depends on the type of network structures. On the other hand, the dimers, in
which there are not mutual interactions, will not do any good to the
cooperation level in a single community, but interestingly, will improve the
cooperation level in a population with two communities. We explore the
relationship between dimers and self-interactions and find that the effects of
dimers are similar to that of self-interactions. Also, we find that the dimers,
which are established over two communities in a multi-community network, act as
one type of interaction through which information between communities is
communicated by the requirement that two players in a dimer hold a same

Realistic description of electron-energy loss spectroscopy for One-Dimensional SrCuO
We investigate the electron-energy loss spectrum of one-dimensional undoped
CuO chains within an extended multi-band Hubbard model and an extended
one-band Hubbard model, using the standard Lanczos algorithm. Short-range
intersite Coulomb interactions are explicitly included in these models, and
long-range interactions are treated in random-phase approximation. The results
for the multi-band model with standard parameter values agree very well with
experimental spectra of SrCuO. In particular, the width of the main
structure is correctly reproduced for all values of momentum transfer. It is
shown for both models that intersite Coulomb interactions mainly lead to an
energy shift of the spectra. We find no evidence for enhanced intersite
