    Dynamics of particle-particle collisions in a viscous liquid

    When two solid spheres collide in a liquid, the dynamic collision process is slowed by viscous dissipation and the increased pressure in the interparticle gap as compared with dry collisions. This paper investigates liquid-immersed head-on and oblique collisions, which complements previously investigated particle-on-wall immersed collisions. By defining the normal from the line of centers at contact, the experimental findings support the decomposition of an oblique collision into its normal and tangential components of motion. The normal relative particle motion is characterized by an effective coefficient of restitution and a binary Stokes number with a correlation that follows the particle-wall results. The tangential motion is described by a collision model using a normal coefficient of restitution and a friction coefficient that are modified for the liquid effects

    A Frequency-Reconfigurable Monopole Antenna with Switchable Stubbed Ground Structure

    A frequency-reconfigurable coplanar-waveguide (CPW) fed monopole antenna using switchable stubbed ground structure is presented. Four PIN diodes are employed in the stubs stretching from the ground to make the antenna reconfigurable in three operating modes: a single-band mode (2.4-2.9 GHz), a dual-band mode (2.4-2.9 GHz/5.09-5.47 GHz) and a triple-band mode (3.7-4.26 GHz/5.3-6.3 GHz/8.0-8.8 GHz). The monopole antenna is resonating at 2.4 GHz, while the stubs produce other operating frequency bands covering a number of wireless communication systems, including WLAN, WiMAX, C-band, and ITU. Furthermore, an optimized biasing network has been integrated into this antenna, which has little influence on the performance of the antenna.     Joint source-coding, channel-coding and modulation schemes based on Variable Length Codes (VLCs), Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM), Turbo TCM (TTCM), Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) and iteratively decoded BICM (BICM-ID) schemes are proposed. A significant coding gain is achieved without bandwidth expansion, when exchanging information between the VLC and the coded modulation decoders with the advent of iterative decoding. With the aid of using independent interleavers for the In-phase and Quadrature phase components of the complex-valued constellation, further diversity gain may be achieved. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated over both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. Explicitly, at BER = 10-5 most of the proposed schemes have BER curves less than one-dB away from the channel capacity limit

    Ground-based testing of the dynamics of flexible space structures using band mechanisms

    A suspension system based on a band mechanism is studied to provide the free-free conditions for ground based validation testing of flexible space structures. The band mechanism consists of a noncircular disk with a convex profile, preloaded by torsional springs at its center of rotation so that static equilibrium of the test structure is maintained at any vertical location; the gravitational force will be directly counteracted during dynamic testing of the space structure. This noncircular disk within the suspension system can be configured to remain unchanged for test articles with the different weights as long as the torsional spring is replaced to maintain the originally designed frequency ratio of W/k sub s. Simulations of test articles which are modeled as lumped parameter as well as continuous parameter systems, are also presented
