Magnetism and the Weiss Exchange Field - A Theoretical Analysis Inspired by Recent Experiments
The huge spin precession frequency observed in recent experiments with
spin-polarized beams of hot electrons shot through magnetized films is
interpreted as being caused by Zeeman coupling of the electron spins to the
so-called Weiss exchange field in the film. A "Stern-Gerlach experiment" for
electrons moving through an inhomogeneous exchange field is proposed. The
microscopic origin of exchange interactions and of large mean exchange fields,
leading to different types of magnetic order, is elucidated. A microscopic
derivation of the equations of motion of the Weiss exchange field is presented.
Novel proofs of the existence of phase transitions in quantum XY-models and
antiferromagnets, based on an analysis of the statistical distribution of the
exchange field, are outlined.Comment: 36 pages, 3 figure
Aharonov-Casher phase and persistent current in a polyacetylene ring
We investigate a polyacetylene ring in an axially symmetric, static electric
field with a modified SSH Hamiltonian of a polyacetylene chain. An effective
gauge potential of the single electron Hamiltonian due to spin-field
interaction is obtained and it results in a Fr\"{o}hlich's type of
superconductivity equivalent to the effect of travelling lattice wave. The
total energy as well as the persistent current density are shown to be a
periodic function of the flux of the gauge field embraced by the polyacetylene
ring.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Spin - or, actually: Spin and Quantum Statistics
The history of the discovery of electron spin and the Pauli principle and the
mathematics of spin and quantum statistics are reviewed. Pauli's theory of the
spinning electron and some of its many applications in mathematics and physics
are considered in more detail. The role of the fact that the tree-level
gyromagnetic factor of the electron has the value g = 2 in an analysis of
stability (and instability) of matter in arbitrary external magnetic fields is
highlighted. Radiative corrections and precision measurements of g are
reviewed. The general connection between spin and statistics, the CPT theorem
and the theory of braid statistics are described.Comment: 50 pages, no figures, seminar on "spin
Field evolution of the magnetic structures in ErTiO through the critical point
We have measured neutron diffraction patterns in a single crystal sample of
the pyrochlore compound ErTiO in the antiferromagnetic phase
(T=0.3\,K), as a function of the magnetic field, up to 6\,T, applied along the
[110] direction. We determine all the characteristics of the magnetic structure
throughout the quantum critical point at =2\,T. As a main result, all Er
moments align along the field at and their values reach a minimum. Using
a four-sublattice self-consistent calculation, we show that the evolution of
the magnetic structure and the value of the critical field are rather well
reproduced using the same anisotropic exchange tensor as that accounting for
the local paramagnetic susceptibility. In contrast, an isotropic exchange
tensor does not match the moment variations through the critical point. The
model also accounts semi-quantitatively for other experimental data previously
measured, such as the field dependence of the heat capacity, energy of the
dispersionless inelastic modes and transition temperature.Comment: 7 pages; 8 figure
Magnetic strip waveguides
We analyze the spectrum of the "local" Iwatsuka model, i.e. a two-dimensional
charged particle interacting with a magnetic field which is homogeneous outside
a finite strip and translationally invariant along it. We derive two new
sufficient conditions for absolute continuity of the spectrum. We also show
that in most cases the number of open spectral gaps of the model is finite. To
illustrate these results we investigate numerically the situation when the
field is zero in the strip being screened, e.g. by a superconducting mask.Comment: 22 pages, a LaTeX source file with three eps figure
Further search for a neutral boson with a mass around 9 MeV/c2
Two dedicated experiments on internal pair conversion (IPC) of isoscalar M1
transitions were carried out in order to test a 9 MeV/c2 X-boson scenario. In
the 7Li(p,e+e-)8Be reaction at 1.1 MeV proton energy to the predominantly T=0
level at 18.15 MeV, a significant deviation from IPC was observed at large pair
correlation angles. In the 11B(d,n e+e-)12C reaction at 1.6 MeV, leading to the
12.71 MeV 1+ level with pure T=0 character, an anomaly was observed at 9
MeV/c2. The compatibility of the results with the scenario is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
