Uniformity Studies of Scintillator Tiles directly coupled to SiPMs for Imaging Calorimetry
We present a novel geometry of scintillator tiles developed for fiberless
coupling to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for applications in highly
granular calorimeters. A high degree of uniformity of the tile response over
the full active area was achieved by a drilled slit at the coupling position of
the photon sensor with 2 mm, 4 mm and 5.5 mm in height, width and depth.
Detailed measurements of the response to penetrating electrons were performed
for tiles with a lateral size of 3 x 3 cm^2 and thicknesses of 5 mm and 3 mm.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted by NIM
Supervised machine learning methods in psychology: A practical introduction with annotated R code
Machine learning methods for prediction and pattern detection are increasingly prevalent in psychological research. We provide an introductory overview of machine learning, its applications, and describe how to implement models for research. We review fundamental concepts of machine learning, such as prediction accuracy and out-of-sample evaluation, and summarize standard prediction algorithms including linear regressions, ridge regressions, decision trees, and random forests (plus additional algorithms in the supplementary materials). We demonstrate each method with examples and annotated R code, and discuss best practices for determining sample sizes; comparing model performances; tuning prediction models; preregistering prediction models; and reporting results. Finally, we discuss the value of machine learning methods in maintaining psychology’s status as a predictive science
The Pulsed Neutron Beam EDM Experiment
We report on the Beam EDM experiment, which aims to employ a pulsed cold
neutron beam to search for an electric dipole moment instead of the established
use of storable ultracold neutrons. We present a brief overview of the basic
measurement concept and the current status of our proof-of-principle Ramsey
apparatus
Measurement of the Neutrino Asymmetry Parameter B in Neutron Decay
A new measurement of the neutrino asymmetry parameter B in neutron decay, the
angular correlation between neutron spin and anti-neutrino momentum, is
presented. The result, B=0.9802(50), agrees with the Standard Model expectation
and earlier measurements, and permits improved tests on ``new physics'' in
neutron decay.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; v2: revised PRL versio
Changes in the density profile due to the m=2 tearing mode in asdex
Resistive MHO tearing modes can develop magnetic islands near the
rational magnetic surfaces, where q=m/ n
Measuring the proton spectrum in neutron decay - latest results with aSPECT
The retardation spectrometer aSPECT was built to measure the shape of the
proton spectrum in free neutron decay with high precision. This allows us to
determine the antineutrino electron angular correlation coefficient a. We aim
for a precision more than one order of magnitude better than the present best
value, which is Delta_a /a = 5%.
In a recent beam time performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin during April /
May 2008 we reached a statistical accuracy of about 2% per 24 hours measurement
time. Several systematic effects were investigated experimentally. We expect
the total relative uncertainty to be well below 5%.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Conference Proceedings of the
International Workshop on Particle Physics with Slow Neutrons 2008 held at
the ILL, France. To be published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in

Detecting and Studying Higgs Bosons at a Photon-Photon Collider
We examine the potential for detecting and studying Higgs bosons at a
photon-photon collider facility associated with a future linear collider. Our
study incorporates realistic \gam\gam luminosity spectra based on the most
probable available laser technology. Results include detector simulations. We
study the cases of: a) a SM-like Higgs boson; b) the heavy MSSM Higgs bosons;
c) a Higgs boson with no couplings from a general two Higgs doublet
model.Comment: 52 pages, 26 figures, revised version with new appendi
