The Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term and its renormalisation in the MSSM
We consider the renormalisation of the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term in a
softly-broken supersymmetric gauge theory with a non-simple gauge group
containing an abelian factor, and present the associated beta-function through
three loops. We also include in an appendix the result for several abelian
factors. We specialise to the case of the minimal supersymmetric standard model
(MSSM), and investigate the behaviour of the Fayet-Iliopoulos coupling for
various boundary conditions at the unification scale. We focus particularly on
the case of non-standard soft supersymmetry breaking couplings, for which the
Fayet-Iliopoulos coupling evolves significantly between the unification scale

Fluctuation-dissipation ratios in the dynamics of self-assembly
We consider two seemingly very different self-assembly processes: formation
of viral capsids, and crystallization of sticky discs. At low temperatures,
assembly is ineffective, since there are many metastable disordered states,
which are a source of kinetic frustration. We use fluctuation-dissipation
ratios to extract information about the degree of this frustration. We show
that our analysis is a useful indicator of the long term fate of the system,

Quasi-Periodic Pulsations during the Impulsive and Decay phases of an X-class Flare
Quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP) are often observed in X-ray emission from
solar flares. To date, it is unclear what their physical origins are. Here, we
present a multi-instrument investigation of the nature of QPP during the
impulsive and decay phases of the X1.0 flare of 28 October 2013. We focus on
the character of the fine structure pulsations evident in the soft X-ray time
derivatives and compare this variability with structure across multiple
wavelengths including hard X-ray and microwave emission. We find that during
the impulsive phase of the flare, high correlations between pulsations in the
thermal and non-thermal emissions are seen. A characteristic timescale of ~20s
is observed in all channels and a second timescale of ~55s is observed in the
non-thermal emissions. Soft X-ray pulsations are seen to persist into the decay
phase of this flare, up to 20 minutes after the non-thermal emission has
ceased. We find that these decay phase thermal pulsations have very small
amplitude and show an increase in characteristic timescale from ~40s up to
~70s. We interpret the bursty nature of the co-existing multi-wavelength QPP
during the impulsive phase in terms of episodic particle acceleration and
plasma heating. The persistent thermal decay phase QPP are most likely
connected with compressive MHD processes in the post-flare loops such as the

Feasibility Test of the MedaCube
Poor adherence is a significant barrier to achieve better patient outcomes. Rates of non-adherence approach 40% resulting in 10% of all emergency department visits and 23% of admissions into skilled nursing facilities. Many factors contribute to medication non-adherence including psychological and memory disorders, aging and pill burden. The MedaCube is a medication management system intended to help solve unintentional medication non-adherence. The device is designed to dispense scheduled and as-needed oral medications. The MedaCube provides audio and visual prompts alerting subjects to administer their medications. Caregivers receive notification of missed doses, late doses and refill requests. The null hypothesis is that use of the MedaCube results in no difference in medication adherence when compared with six month prior adherence in individual subjects
Mechanisms of kinetic trapping in self-assembly and phase transformation
In self-assembly processes, kinetic trapping effects often hinder the
formation of thermodynamically stable ordered states. In a model of viral
capsid assembly and in the phase transformation of a lattice gas, we show how
simulations in a self-assembling steady state can be used to identify two
distinct mechanisms of kinetic trapping. We argue that one of these mechanisms
can be adequately captured by kinetic rate equations, while the other involves
a breakdown of theories that rely on cluster size as a reaction coordinate. We
discuss how these observations might be useful in designing and optimising
self-assembly reactions

A continuous model for microtubule dynamics with catastrophe, rescue and nucleation processes
Microtubules are a major component of the cytoskeleton distinguished by
highly dynamic behavior both in vitro and in vivo. We propose a general
mathematical model that accounts for the growth, catastrophe, rescue and
nucleation processes in the polymerization of microtubules from tubulin dimers.
Our model is an extension of various mathematical models developed earlier
formulated in order to capture and unify the various aspects of tubulin
polymerization including the dynamic instability, growth of microtubules to
saturation, time-localized periods of nucleation and depolymerization as well
as synchronized oscillations exhibited by microtubules under various
experimental conditions. Our model, while attempting to use a minimal number of
adjustable parameters, covers a broad range of behaviors and has predictive
features discussed in the paper. We have analyzed the resultant behaviors of
the microtubules changing each of the parameter values at a time and observing
the emergence of various dynamical regimes.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure
