Mathematical Modelling of Different Types of Body Support Surface for Pressure Ulcer Prevention

    Get PDF
Pressure ulcer is a common problem for today’s healthcare industry. It occurs due to external load applied to the skin. Also when the subject is immobile for a longer period of time and there is continuous load applied to a particular area of human body, blood flow gets reduced and as a result pressure ulcer develops. Body support surface has a significant role in preventing ulceration so it is important to know the characteristics of support surface under loading conditions. In this paper we have presented mathematical models of different types of viscoelastic materials and also we have shown the validation of our simulation results with experiments

    Wide Angle Redshift Distortions Revisited

We explore linear redshift distortions in wide angle surveys from the point of view of symmetries. We show that the redshift space two-point correlation function can be expanded into tripolar spherical harmonics of zero total angular momentum Sl1l2l3(x^1,x^2,x^)S_{l_1 l_2 l_3}(\hat x_1, \hat x_2, \hat x). The coefficients of the expansion Bl1l2l3B_{l_1 l_2 l_3} are analogous to the ClC_l's of the angular power spectrum, and express the anisotropy of the redshift space correlation function. Moreover, only a handful of Bl1l2l3B_{l_1 l_2 l_3} are non-zero: the resulting formulae reveal a hidden simplicity comparable to distant observer limit. The Bl1l2l3B_{l_1 l_2 l_3} depend on spherical Bessel moments of the power spectrum and f=Ω0.6/bf = \Omega^{0.6}/b. In the plane parallel limit, the results of \cite{Kaiser1987} and \cite{Hamilton1993} are recovered. The general formalism is used to derive useful new expressions. We present a particularly simple trigonometric polynomial expansion, which is arguably the most compact expression of wide angle redshift distortions. These formulae are suitable to inversion due to the orthogonality of the basis functions. An alternative Legendre polynomial expansion was obtained as well. This can be shown to be equivalent to the results of \cite{SzalayEtal1998}. The simplicity of the underlying theory will admit similar calculations for higher order statistics as well.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, ApJL submitte

A Review on Pressure Ulcer: Aetiology, Cost, Detection and Prevention Systems

Pressure ulcer (also known as pressure sore, bedsore, ischemia, decubitus ulcer) is a global challenge for today’s healthcare society. Found in several locations in the human body such as the sacrum, heel, back of the head, shoulder, knee caps, it occurs when soft tissues are under continuous loading and a subject’s mobility is restricted (bedbound/chair bound). Blood flow in soft tissues becomes insufficient leading to tissue necrosis (cell death) and pressure ulcer. The subject’s physiological parameters (age, body mass index) and types of body support surface materials (mattress) are also factors in the formation of pressure ulcer. The economic impacts of these are huge, and the subject’s quality of life is reduced in many ways. There are several methods of detecting and preventing ulceration in human body. Detection depends on assessing local pressure on tissue and prevention on scales of risk used to assess a subject prior to admission. There are also various types of mattresses (air cushioned/liquid filled/foam) available to prevent ulceration. But, despite this work, pressure ulcers remain common. This article reviews the aetiology, cost, detection and prevention of these ulcers

Comparing the Evolution of the Galaxy Disk Sizes with CDM Models: The Hubble Deep Field

The intrinsic sizes of the field galaxies with I<26 in the Hubble and ESO-NTT Deep Fields are shown as a function of their redshifts and absolute magnitudes using photometric redshifts derived from the multicolor catalogs and are compared with the CDM predictions. Extending to lower luminosities and to higher z our previous analysis performed on the NTT field alone, we find that the distribution of the galaxy disk sizes at different cosmic epochs is within the range predicted by typical CDM models. However, the observed size distribution of faint (M_B>-19) galaxies is skewed with respect to the CDM predictions and an excess of small-size disks (R_d<2 kpc) is already present at z~ 0.5. The excess persists up to z~3 and involves brighter galaxies . Such an excess may be reduced if luminosity-dependent effects, like starburst activity in interacting galaxies, are included in the physical mechanisms governing the star formation history in CDM models.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, ApJ Letters in pres

    Radial Redshift Space Distortions

The radial component of the peculiar velocities of galaxies cause displacements in their positions in redshift space. We study the effect of the peculiar velocities on the linear redshift space two point correlation function. Our analysis takes into account the radial nature of the redshift space distortions and it highlights the limitations of the plane parallel approximation. We consider the problem of determining the value of \beta and the real space two point correlation function from the linear redshift space two point correlation function. The inversion method proposed here takes into account the radial nature of the redshift space distortions and can be applied to magnitude limited redshift surveys that have only partial sky coverage.Comment: 26 pages including 11 figures, to appear in Ap

    Climate-dependent CO2 emissions from lakes

Inland waters, just as the world's oceans, play an important role in the global carbon cycle. While lakes and reservoirs typically emit CO2, they also bury carbon in their sediment. The net CO2 emission is largely the result of the decomposition or preservation of terrestrially supplied carbon. What regulates the balance between CO2 emission and carbon burial is not known, but climate change and temperature have been hypothesized to influence both processes. We analyzed patterns in carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) in 83 shallow lakes over a large climatic gradient in South America and found a strong, positive correlation with temperature. The higher pCO2 in warmer lakes may be caused by a higher, temperature-dependent mineralization of organic carbon. This pattern suggests that cool lakes may start to emit more CO2 when they warm up because of climate ch

On the Number Density of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Clusters of Galaxies

    Get PDF
If the mean properties of clusters of galaxies are well described by the entropy-driven model, the distortion induced by the cluster population on the blackbody spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation is proportional to the total amount of intracluster gas while temperature anisotropies are dominated by the contribution of clusters of about 10^{14} solar masses. This result depends marginally on cluster parameters and it can be used to estimate the number density of clusters with enough hot gas to produce a detectable Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. Comparing different cosmological models, the relation depends mainly on the density parameter Omega_m. If the number density of clusters could be estimated by a different method, then this dependence could be used to constrain Omega_m.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ Letter

The Evolution of the Galaxy Sizes in the NTT Deep Field: a Comparison with CDM Models

    Get PDF
The sizes of the field galaxies with I<25 have been measured in the NTT Deep Field. Intrinsic sizes have been obtained after deconvolution of the PSF with a multigaussian method. The reliability of the method has been tested using both simulated data and HST observations of the same field. The distribution of the half light radii is peaked at r_{hl} 0.3 arcsec, in good agreement with that derived from HST images at the same magnitude. An approximate morphological classification has been obtained using the asymmetry and concentration parameters. The intrinsic sizes of the galaxies are shown as a function of their redshifts and absolute magnitudes using photometric redshifts derived from the multicolor catalog. While the brighter galaxies with morphological parameters typical of the normal spirals show a flat distribution in the range r_{d}=1-6 kpc, the fainter population at 0.4<z<0.8 dominates at small sizes. To explore the significance of this behaviour, an analytical rendition of the standard CDM model for the disc size evolution has been computed. The model showing the best fit to the local luminosity function and the Tully-Fisher relation is able to reproduce at intermediate redshifts a size distribution in general agreement with the observations, although it tends to underestimate the number of galaxies fainter than M_B~ -19 with disk sizes r_d~ 1-2 kpc.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, ApJ in press, Dec 199

Vector meson photoproduction studied in its radiative decay channel

We provide an analysis of vector meson photoproduction in the channel of the vector meson decaying into a pseudoscalar meson plus a photon, i.e. VPγV\to P\gamma. It is shown that non-trivial kinematic correlations arise from the measurement of the PγP\gamma angular distributions in the overall c.m. system in comparison with those in the vector-meson-rest frame. In terms of the vector meson density matrix elements, the implication of such kinematic correlations in the measurement of polarization observables is discussed. For the ω\omega meson production, due to its relatively large branching ratios for ωπ0γ\omega\to\pi^0\gamma, additional events from this channel may enrich the information about the reaction mechanism and improve the statistics of the recent measurement of polarized beam asymmetries by the GRAAL Collaboration. For ϕηγ\phi\to \eta\gamma, ρπγ\rho\to \pi\gamma, and KKγK^*\to K\gamma, we expect that additional information about the spin structure of the vector meson production vertex can be derived.Comment: Revtex, 14 pages, 2 eps figures; Version accepted by PR
