Weak order for the discretization of the stochastic heat equation driven by impulsive noise
Considering a linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation
driven by impulsive space time noise, dX_t+AX_t dt= Q^{1/2}dZ_t, X_0=x_0\in H,
t\in [0,T], we approximate the distribution of X_T. (Z_t)_{t\in[0,T]} is an
impulsive cylindrical process and Q describes the spatial covariance structure
of the noise; Tr(A^{-\alpha})0 and A^\beta Q is bounded
for some \beta\in(\alpha-1,\alpha]. A discretization
(X_h^n)_{n\in\{0,1,...,N\}} is defined via the finite element method in space
(parameter h>0) and a \theta-method in time (parameter \Delta t=T/N). For
\phi\in C^2_b(H;R) we show an integral representation for the error
|E\phi(X^N_h)-E\phi(X_T)| and prove that
|E\phi(X^N_h)-E\phi(X_T)|=O(h^{2\gamma}+(\Delta t)^{\gamma}) where
\gamma<1-\alpha+\beta.Comment: 29 pages; Section 1 extended, new results in Appendix
The discrete flavor symmetry D5
We consider the standard model (SM) extended by the flavor symmetry D5 and
search for a minimal model leading to viable phenomenology. We find that it
contains four Higgs fields apart from the three generations of fermions whose
left- and left-handed conjugate parts do not transform in the same way under
D5. We provide two numerical fits for the case of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos
to show the viability of our low energy model. The fits can accommodate all
data with the neutrinos being normally ordered. For Majorana neutrinos two of
the right-handed neutrinos are degenerate. Concerning the Higgs sector we find
that all potentials constructed with three SM-like Higgs doublets transforming
as 1+2 under D5 have a further unwanted global U(1) symmetry. Therefore we
consider the case of four Higgs fields forming two D5 doublets and show that
this potential leads to viable solutions in general, however it does not allow
spontaneous CP-violation (SCPV) for an arbitrary vacuum expectation value (VEV)
configuration. Finally, we discuss extensions of our model to grand unified
theories (GUTs) as well as embeddings of D5 into the continuous flavor
symmetries SO(3)_f and SU(3)_f.Comment: 22 page
A Note on Optimal Effort in the Maldivian Tuna Fishery
This note argues that spatial considerations and travel costs should be taken into account in devising tax/subsidy regulations for island-based tuna fisheries. In particular, the effect of a landings tax on distant fishing grounds should be considered when setting the level of the tax. A fuel subsidy is suggested as a means of offsetting the impact of the landings tax on marginal grounds.Environmental Economics and Policy, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
ATS-6 flight accelerometers
Five accelerometers mounted near the adapter base of the Titan 3-C launch vehicle and three on the hub of the ATS-F spacecraft provided (1) data for verifying basic spacecraft mode shapes and frequencies during powered flight while attached to the launch vehicle; (2) failure mode detection and diagnostic information on in-flight anomalies; and (3) data to be used in the design of future spacecraft to be flown on the Titan 3-C. Because data from the instruments mounted on the spacecraft hub passed through an in-flight disconnect at the separation plane between the transtage and ATS-F, the moment this connector was broken, the signal to the telemetry system showed a step function change. By monitoring these telemetry traces on the ground at appropriate times during flight sequences, a positive indication of spacecraft separation was obtained. Flight data showing dynamic response at spacecraft launch vehicle interface and at the top of ATS spacecraft during significant launch events are presented in tables
keV sterile neutrino dark matter in gauge extensions of the standard model
It is known that a keV scale sterile neutrino is a good warm dark matter
candidate. We study how this possibility could be realized in the context of
gauge extensions of the standard model. The na\"ive expectation leads to large
thermal overproduction of sterile neutrinos in this setup. However, we find
that it is possible to use out-of-equilibrium decay of the other right-handed
neutrinos of the model to dilute the present density of the keV sterile
neutrinos and achieve the observed dark matter density. We present the
universal requirements that should be satisfied by the gauge extensions of the
standard model, containing right-handed neutrinos, to be viable models of warm
dark matter, and provide a simple example in the context of the left-right
symmetric model.Comment: RevTex, 13 pages, 5 figures; journal version (corrected typos
Rent Generation During the Transition to a Managed Fishery: The Case of the New Zealand ITQ System
This paper examines the generation of resource rent during the transition from an over-exploited to an efficiently managed fishery. A simple theoretical model is used to demonstrate that current industry returns may below or even negative during this adjustment phase. A case in point is the New Zealand commercial fisheries which have recently become subject to a Quota Management System. Three sources of evidence on the level of resource rents generated during the initial years of the Quota Management System are examined and compared. These sources are: annual profitability data; the market price of perpetual quota; and the market price of annual lease quota. The evidence in some cases appears to be contradictory and an attempt is made to resolve or explain such differences. It is concluded that a better understanding of price determination in the quota market is required in order to draw correct inferences about rent generation.Rent, Generation, Transition, Individual, Transferable, Quotas, Fishery, Management, New Zealand, Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Leptogenesis in models with keV sterile neutrino dark matter
We analyze leptogenesis in gauge extensions of the Standard Model with keV
sterile neutrino dark matter. We find that both the observed dark matter
abundance and the correct baryon asymmetry of the Universe can simultaneously
emerge in these models. Both the dark matter abundance and the leptogenesis are
controlled by the out of equilibrium decays of the same heavy right handed
neutrino.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Coupling Reduces Noise
We demonstrate how coupling nonlinear dynamical systems can reduce the
effects of noise. For simplicity we investigate noisy coupled map lattices.
Noise from different lattice nodes can diffuse across the lattice and lower the
noise level of individual nodes. We develop a theoretical model that explains
this observed noise evolution and show how the coupled dynamics can naturally
function as an averaging filter. Our numerical simulations are in excellent
agreement with the model predictions
